About this project
Thanks so much for all of the support on Kickstarter! It's been a great run and we've learned so much. For information about downloading the Scandy app please go to Scandy.co/download.
The team here at Scandy has been working hard to make the 3D scanning and printing process as painless as possible so that you can enjoy the sweetest part of 3D. Recently, we came up with a whole new way to create and share panoramas that we call Scandy Sphere. When we shared our new idea with current customers, friends and family, the response was overwhelmingly positive. In order to scale up production, we’re looking to the Kickstarter community to help jumpstart the capital needed to increase production and print more Scandy Spheres.
The Scandy Sphere brings stunning 360° panoramas to life like you've never seen before. Capture the world around you with our custom app (soon to be available for both iOS and Android) and then order stunning full-color 3D-printed panoramas of your favorite memory to keep with you always.
3D scanning and 3D printing is pretty sweet! Up until now, it has been hard to create and print in 3D. Making 3D scanning and 3D printing simple is a big part of Scandy's mission and something the whole team is really passionate about. The iPad Scandy app that is live in the app store today is an awesome tool for scanning objects around you in 3D and ordering full-color 3D prints. The only problem is that it requires a 3D scanner and not everyone owns one. The upcoming Scandy 1.0 turns your phone into the easiest way to capture moments that deserve more love than a simple snapshot.
The Scandy Sphere gives everyone access to the future of 3D scan to 3D print technology. By bringing this to the Kickstarter community, we are excited to be able to put our technology into your hands sooner! No need for an extra scanner. The only hardware you need to create a Scandy Sphere is a smartphone — the one you have in your pocket.
We are nearly finished building the Android and iOS apps that provide an intuitive and easy-to-use interface for assistance in creating the best possible 360º panoramas.
Making panoramas with your phone isn’t exactly new. Chances are you probably have one sitting in your camera roll right now. That’s the problem though, all those awesome shots are just sitting there in virtual purgatory. Not a problem. You can upload them from your camera roll to the Scandy app or to Scandy.co and our magical servers take care of the rest. We will analyze your panorama and automagically offer some suggestions. You just pick the best one and press print!
With the new Scandy app you are able to capture your world in 360° and order full-color 3D prints directly from your phone. Scandy gives everybody a way to capture moments in 3D and order a 3D printed keepsake delivered right to your doorstep.
Now those big beautiful moments from your life can fit right in the palm of your hand.
What do you get?
We are not one of those pie in the sky Kickstarter campaigns with a project that is not real. Scandy is real and we have a team behind this cool new technology. We are scanning and 3D printing today, and backing us gets you early access to Scandy. You will be one of the first to own a 3D printed sphere of a photo that you have taken. We think that’s pretty cool. You will get early access to features before the rest of the world does, and you will have access to the Scandy team to submit suggestions and improvements.
We are keeping it pretty simple with our Kickstarter levels. Our backers get Scandy Spheres at a great price with free shipping to the lower 48. The earliest backers get the best deals. Hop on board now to get early access to 3D scanning in your pocket.

About the Scandy Sphere
Scandy Spheres are a revolutionary new way to share and hold your 360° panoramic photographs. Each Scandy Sphere is printed and artfully post processed by the Scandy team on our full-color 3D printers.
We are currently offering the Scandy Sphere in three sizes:
You have the option of uploading and printing your own Scandy Sphere or choosing one of our "Scandy Favorites". Here is a small sample of some of our current Scandy Favorites but more are added daily. Not sure if you want to choose a Scandy Favorite or upload your own? No worries. You can switch back and forth at the end of the campaign. We will send out a questionnaire.
Do you have an awesome 360° panorama that you think would make a great Scandy Favorite? Drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can talk!
The Scandy Spheres are 3D printed on our 3D Systems ProJet 660 printer that printer prints the color directly into the model, creating vibrant full-color 3D printed objects that you will want to keep forever.
Why are we on Kickstarter?
As you can see, we are already printing Scandy Spheres. We came to Kickstarter to ask for your help to grow Scandy and to spread the word. We need your help to get another high-tech 3D printer — a 3D Systems ProJet 660.
We also want feedback from believers. If you are interested in 3D scanning, 3D printing, photography, 360° panoramas, ninjas, or other cool stuff, we want you to take a moment and back us at any level to get access to the next wave of 3D scanning to 3D printing.
Who is Scandy?
Scandy was started 14 months ago by Charles Carriere and Cole Wiley with help from Revelry Labs. We are based in the gorgeous city of New Orleans, Louisiana — y’all should come visit!
In those 14 months we've done some amazing things. We've developed a 3D scanning iPad app that – with the help of an Occipital Structure Sensor – allows users to scan objects in 3D and order full-color prints directly from the app.
We are excited to say that we already have Scandy users from around the globe. We are able to ship internationally for an additional shipping cost. We will add $10–$20 (depending on the size of the Sphere) for shipping to make sure your Scandy Sphere arrives safely.
All backers will receive early access to the Scandy app so you can start taking 360° Scandy Spheres with your phone ASAP. As soon as you capture a Scandy Sphere that you would like to print, just press order and we will queue your Scandy Sphere to be 3D printed. You can expect your custom sphere to be printed and shipped in under four weeks after you order it while scandy Favorites will start shipping two weeks after the Kickstarter campaign closes.
We got you. Email any Scandy-related questions to email@example.com or leave a comment here. We are more than happy to help you. If you live outside the US, have a ProJet x60, and are interested in becoming one our international partners, we are actively building out distribution channels. If you are a pro who is interested in developing a partnership please reach out at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Risks and challenges
Not many. We are already printing and fulfilling Scandy Sphere orders through the beta version of our app. Our number one biggest challenge is prepping for a new printer and corresponding machinery. Luckily we are pros at this. Our fulfillment partner, Entrescan, is currently the only 3D Systems distributor for Louisiana and Mississippi. We have already selected the 3D printer, and pending a successful Kickstarter campaign, we will be able to order it to increase production.
We are also working through the alpha version of Scandy for iPhone and Android. So there are the typical challenges of developing and designing a great and stable mobile app. We’ve already released Scandy iPad with the Structure scanner so we see no reason we can’t release a great app for iPhone and Android!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes those will work! Our server detects the field of view of the image and automagically crops the sphere to look best. You will end up with a sphere that has the top and bottom sections cut off, or a cylinder depending on your preference. You can pick via the app when the campaign ends.
Presently if you want to get 3 spheres with different images, you need to order them separately. We're looking into adding this as a feature down the line, but for now, order 3 if you want 3 different ones.
This is another great feature request and something that we are exploring. For now, if you can insert the picture (using Photoshop, etc) into your panorama, we can certainly print it up. We are not (yet) equipped to do custom touch-ups or editing of photographs. In the future? Totally. That's why we want to give you Beta access, to help develop and test new features like this!
The app is getting close. We are using it internally and are going to being release the app live in the App Store and Google Play Store for the end of the campaign. Scandy will be compatible with all iOS and Android devices running the latest OS.
The spheres are printed in a gypsum powder (like drywall). They are bound together with a binder and the color is printed directly into the spheres. The ink that is used is frequently found in production-level 2D printers. Some people refer to this kind of 3D print as a sandstone print.
The color is printed all the way through. The Scandy Sphere is finished with a protective coating. Over time, that coating could wear off if it is handled a lot. The handling won't wear off the colors, but over a long period of time excessive handling could certainly put enough dirt on the sphere to dull the colors. The Scandy Sphere is made to be handled, though. Just don't handle it when eating ribs, say, or potato chips. Because the Scandy Sphere doesn't play nice with barbecue sauce or greasy hands. Treat it like you would a photograph
The 2" small is .6 oz, the 3" medium is 1.4 oz, and the 4" large is 3.5 oz
The spheres are hollow. Making them solid costs too much. We also have some really great ideas about how to take advantage of their hollow nature... More to come soon, check back for updates on this!
The lawyers are making me tell you to read our terms of service ( https://scandy.co/terms_of_service )— so please go do that. Unfortunately, we cannot give you specific advice on those examples. Based on our terms of service, by uploading a picture you are telling us that you own that image and have the rights to use it. Please don't download a picture that you don't own and ask us to print it. Regarding copyrighted materials, our service doesn’t really work any differently from any 2D photo site or service. If you could take a 2D photo of something and use it for yourself legally, then you can print it on a Scandy Sphere. We are not selling replicas of licensed materials, and we are not a platform for others to do that. Don't upload pictures or materials you don't own. You may get into legal trouble for doing that. If you upload something to our site, you are telling us you own it. We put your panoramas on a sphere. Pretty sweet, right?
