About this project
The overall story of VIKE is about five lost vikings trying to survive a journey back home as they cross various lands filled with dangerous enemies, hostile savages, and wild beasts. The story is centered around Kol, the youngest of the five vikings, who is still learning the ways of traveling warrior vikings. As the series progresses, the group will encounter many challenges – physical and mental – but the desire to make it back home fuels each of them.
WE HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE: VIKE, was meant to be a monthly comic series but due to publishing costs and the fact we are on our own, we have decided to put the entire first arch into one volume, "VIKE, Volume 1: The Island of Stol" (100 pages). In this first volume, you will learn a lot about the world of VIKE and the cast of, KOL, AIRIK, POLLO, VIGNUS, and BROEDEE. This first volume will give readers a complete sense of these five vikings and the reason why each of them wants to get back to their homeland. The journey of Kol, Pollo, Vignus, Airik and Broedee begins with their clan, the "Lognorf Clan", in a battle with an enemy clan, while attempting to find a treasure on an island that is currently inhabited with a rival viking clan. When the Lognorfs are force to retreat, our five heroes are left behind and now need to find their own way back home. Our heroes will be trapped on the "Island of Stol" with an enemy Viking army. Now our heroes must figure out a way to get off the island before they are discovered and killed, or even worse... captured.
This first arch is only the beginning of VIKE as we have many stories to tell. (don't worry it is in fact a complete story) In total, you will be Kickstarting the beginning of what we hope is a successful franchise.
As VIKE progresses the journey back home will test the five vikings morals, beliefs, and combat capabilities. They will all have to make choices throughout the story. Some of the choices they make will better themselves as well as the group, while other choices may only be beneficial to themselves or only the group. Each viking will show what they are truly made of as the story progresses. They will each take on a different role that will be crucial to the groups survival as they journey back home.
HOW DID THIS START: A few months ago I had a weird dream... I was surrounded by Vikings and the Vikings I was with were hiding for some reason in a cave on an island. They said they needed my help to get them off of the island. As soon as they told me that I woke up. I then had that same exact dream about five times a week for about a month straight. So, finally I figured let me write down everything I saw in the dream... and it just took off! I started writing and thinking and before I knew it I had an entire pitch for an epic adventure comic known as "VIKE".
Eventually, when I found my Artist Tamas Szalkai, we got to work and brought VIKE to life and we pitched around to every company who accepted creator-owned submissions. Every company we submitted to had positive reviews of the comic but told us they had no room to fit this book into it's schedule. This is where I began to brainstorm, do some research and stumbled across KICKSTARTER! I still felt like something was missing to VIKE in order to really push it on Kickstarter, and then it hit me! I wanted to get VIKE colored! That is where we found our colorist, Victoria Pittman, and the rest is history!
VIKE AS A WHOLE: Our intentions for VIKE is to either turn it into an on-going monthly title if we can get it picked up by a creator-owned publisher. However, if we can't do that, we will come out with Volumes of VIKE until our story is completed. Each volume will be 100 pages.
Any support would be greatly appreciated.
WHY DO WE NEED YOU TO BACK THE PROJECT? Because producing a Graphic Novel is expensive for a guy who has $120,000 in student-loan debt.
WHERE IS YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY GOING?
$2200 will go to paying the artist and colorist for their hard work and time.
$1000 will go to all of the legal fees, copyrighting the book, getting an ISBN, and processing fees for setting up VIKE, Vol. 1 on graphicly.com.
If you do the math, you see that leaves no money for the me... Sal Brucculeri... the writer... the creator... the guy writing this all up for you, with hopes and dreams to make all of this possible. But I don't care. I want this project made and in your hands because I know you will enjoy everything in this book, every piece of the story and every panel of the amazing artwork!
Thank you for your time and consideration in reading this pitch. I hope you will see it fit to spend your hard-earned money on VIKE, Volume 1.
WHAT IS GRAPHICLY?
Graphicly.com will set up all of the technical aspects of VIKE, Vol. 1 which will allow us creators to focus on getting this project complete as efficiently quick as possible. Thanks to Graphicly, VIKE, Vol. 1 will be available on: Kindle Fire, iPhone + iPad, NOOK Color, NOOK Tablet, NOOK Touch, Android Tables, Android Phones, and Kobo VOX Reader
WHY A DIGITAL GRAPHIC NOVEL RATHER THAN A HARD COPY? Unfortunately, printing a book is very expensive even if the price is considered "cheap". In order to make VIKE, VOL. 1 a book you can put in your library it would cost another $4000 for the run of printing. Which would make this Kickstater's goal reward $7200. That is just a lot of money to ask from people. So, we decided to go digital! There is no storage issues, no significant other telling you not to leave your books around, no kids spilling juice on the pages, no ripping of pages, no folding of corners, no un-minting of any kind! All around greatness!
(This Graphich Novel would be rated R if it was a movie)
HERE ARE THE FIRST FEW PAGES OF VIKE FOR YOU TO GET A TASTE!
$7,200: We will print VIKE, Volume 1 and send it to anyone who donated $35+.
$10,500: We will gear up for the digital publishing of VIKE, Volume 2 and send it to anyone who send $35+. This would be completed in 2014.
Risks and challenges
The reason I have turned to Kickstarter for VIKE, Volume 1 is because this Graphic Novel has been pitched/submitted for the past six months. After many reviews from various creator-owned publishers the responses have been the same... There has been nothing but positive feedback for VIKE, Vol. 1. but the problem is either the fact that we have been told VIKE, Vol. 1 is too edgy for them to market with an unknown writer, companies aren't sure if people care about Vikings anymore, or... well, they don't guarantee enough payment for my teams hard work. I could, careless if I (Sal Bruccueri/writer) get paid, but I need my team to be paid for their time and work.
With that all being said, another reason is because of the financial challenges producing a Graphic Novel has. The script is complete but the art is not. Remember this is a pre-order. Funding for this project will go towards paying the artist and colorist to complete this project. I already have a printer set up and they are waiting on the art work to get sent over so they could start the printing process. The print run will take 2 months to print and another month to ship. Once that happens I will be waiting on all of the little prizes to be produced and the Graphic Novel will make it's way to your doorstep. It will be done and in your hands before December 2013 but that is the set date of arrival at the latest.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
In VIKE: Volume 1, Pollo is the fearless leader of the group. In being the leader, he must keep a log of each mission or journey. Pollo's Journal is an ongoing log starting from weeks before VIKE: Volume 1's story and will range through out the entire story. The first few pages of Pollo's Journal will be posted in a scheduled update leading into the VIKE: Volume 1's kicsktarter success.
