About

Kids are excited to learn music! Even small children have the desire and capacity to learn to play, and it is up to us to make the learning process fun and easy, not discouraging or overwhelming.  Every month, I have parents come to me with the question, "What is an appropriate age for my child to learn piano?  My 3 (or 4) year old is REALLY interested!  They go to the piano at home all the time, they play the keys, and they have figured out melodies! Can they start lessons?"

Traditionally, the music teacher answer is "not yet." Traditional music learning is designed to correlate with elementary school, and the strict setting and books filled with too many words are overwhelming. But preschoolers are incredible learners! They listen, see, touch, absorb information, pull out patterns, and connect all those dots faster than we realize it's happening--until we turn around and catch them snap chatting and sharing YouTube videos off stolen smart phones, or singing EVERY WORD of their favorite Disney song or cartoon theme. After spending the last decade teaching and coaching these littlest learners, it has become clear that traditional music instruction has not kept up with the growing interest and excitement from young children and their families.

Basic Pattern Recognition--Black Keys

We have designed this book with these excited preschoolers in mind. It is designed to be a fun, encouraging introduction to making music by using songs and concepts they are already familiar with. Our music is laid out so the youngest students can play piano with minimal instruction and encouragement from parents. All the songs are written with alphabet letters and no staff. The format is kept simple, so that preschool and kindergarten students will not be overwhelmed with sensory information. Even if you don't know anything about music, the patterns are simple and basic enough to walk through it with your child. In my experience, 4-5 year old students only need to be shown a new concept once or twice, and they will grab the book and run with it (sometimes literally). This book can be used by any beginning student on any instrument as soon as they know how to locate the notes.

Risks and challenges

Risks for this particular book are almost non existent, since we already have all pages completed and an E book is in the process of being released this week on Kindle. However, due limited funds, we haven't yet been able to produce a paperback copy. Also, due to time constraints (both author and illustrator work full time), the contents of this first edition were scaled back. This was unfortunate at the time, but it currently puts us and our investors in a win-win situation. The funds from this project will help pay the illustrator for time invested in character prints, the actual paperback publishing of the book, and give us the jump we need to look ahead to the next project. The next step for our studio is to create a mobile platform that is designed for children to learn, collaborate, and perform their music.
