About this project
Alien Wisdom: Extraterrestrial Insights into our Cosmic World
In the beginning they arrived, one by one, explorers, each in search of new adventures and civilizations, but occasionally they encountered difficulties. Strong storms and obstacles caught them off guard, and they fell to earth in a fiery crash. Marooned here, they waited, century upon century, hoping to be saved. Finally, falling into despair, they resigned themselves to their fate, lost on this distant planet till...
Ursula Roma came along with her tool bag.
My goal with this project is to travel all fifty states resurrecting wounded aliens, repairing their damaged vehicles, interviewing and photographing them, then sending them on their voyage back to their home planets. I've been given a map of crash sites across the country where critical members of our universe await resurrection and repair. I will go to each location, find the appropriate parts necessary to complete the job, and perform surgery on each of these extraterrestrials and their spacecrafts. I will then create a high-quality, art book documenting each of the 50 aliens, and the wisdom they share with me before they leave. I will post updates and assignments on the blog for people who’d like to participate in the spirit of this reconstructive mission. So come on along! Maggie and I welcome you!

NEW REWARD - SPONSOR AN ALIEN!
Sponsor an Alien! These little aliens need a lot of work before they can return to their home planets. Now is your big chance to help get the missing parts they need to send them home by sponsoring one of the above!
In gratitude for your sponsorship, you will receive an introductory letter with photo, bio, and basic facts about your extraterrestrial. Plus, you will get reconstruction reports so you can follow it's progress! You can write letters back, too! Upon completion, you will get a framed print of your alien before it returns to space, with a story and insights that your creature will share, once it has a voice!
ART - the Alien Reconstruction Team's Interactive Projects!
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT with ART
Ursula will be calling for community participation with this alien series. During her travels, she will be blogging about her experience, and will teach about her process of creating art from recycled materials.
The aliens have a long trip ahead of them. Lively tunes could certainly entertain them during their voyage home. The Alien Reconstruction Team will be calling on fellow earthlings to act as sound ambassadors to assist in creating music for the alien’s epic journey back to their planets.
The Alien Reconstruction Team will encourage visionary doodlers to create background illustrations and concept art for the reassembled extraterrestrials. These images will help reboot the aliens’ memories of their homeland and get them psyched up for their exodus.
The Alien Reconstruction Team will post requests for short videos with specific intergalactic assignments. Stay tuned to the blog for ways to express your exploratory visions.
The Alien Reconstruction Team will collect your stories about alien sitings and visitations, real and imaginary. So, free your mind and write some stories about these extraordinary creatures to share with the world!
ART - Alien Reconstruction Team
THE A.R.T. BLOG will be a record of my adventures with words, photos, sounds and videos documenting my travels and discoveries across all 50 states. This will include alien landing sites, restoration and reconstruction of the aliens, and their insights into life here on earth. The blog will contain videos of my extraordinary feats of putting the aliens and their ships back together. After their resurrection, these aliens will be able to impart the wisdom they have gathered from their years of experience in the ever-expanding universe. I’ll record their insights to share with my fellow humans. As I re-create these aliens, I will provide posts with ideas for assorted space-related projects for people of all ages. I’ll engage kids and adults in drawing contests, and will call for public submissions of short, space music compositions. I will encourage public interaction in several different ways. So, join in the fun and become an ART Team member!
The blog will:
- Show how to spot an alien crash site and share ways that you can help these interplanetary citizens!
-Suggest local products that would make nice souvenirs for the aliens to take back to their friends and families.
-Post ideas and tutorial videos about my creative process.
-Show how to assemble unusual shapes and parts, and provide various options for construction.
-Post treasure hunts for kids.
-Highlight people from all over the world who salvage objects for new creations.
BOOK: At end of this tour, I will have collected so much wisdom from the aliens, that I will create a book. It will present photos of each of the fifty reconstructed aliens, along with their names, location discovered, words of wisdom and juicy tidbits of practical information I have procured during my journeys with them. Alien Wisdom: Extraterrestrial Insights into our Cosmic World, will be available as a downloadable
e-book, soft-cover or hard-cover book in the rewards section! Thank you for being part of ART, the Alien Reconstruction Team!
*All of the aliens that I re-create will return to their home planets when completed, so they will not be available for purchase, but high-quality prints of the finished extraterrestrials will be available in the form of books and posters in the reward section!
BFA, MFA, (UD; Doctor of UFO's - Unusual Found Objects)
I am an avid recycler. I have been bringing life to inanimate objects for 20 years. I work with found pieces, broken parts, obsolete tools, abandoned musical instruments, discarded shapes and various odds-n-ends, and use them to create sculptures and constructions. I repurpose materials, so these shapes don’t end up discarded when they can be used to create art.
More of my recycled art can be seen on this site: http://ursularomafoundobjects.blogspot.com/
I have written articles about recycled art. See links for below. http://ursularoma3.blogspot.com/
about Ursula Roma's artwork
Simply put, Ursula Roma is an alchemist. She finds base materials and by her own special magic, she turns them into beautiful art. I sincerely hope that Ursula has the opportunity to continue to cast her spell.
— Murray Tinkelman, Director of MFA in Illustration, Hartford Art School
Ursula Roma is a very talented and diverse artist who brings her wit, wisdom and whimsical imagination to any expression she choses to use, from drawings, paintings, and wonderful found-object sculptures. These thoughtful and charming sculptural illustrations use pattern, form and color found in Roma’s drawn and painted works and translates them to a new vision. Her collages are happy, decorative illustrations unafraid of their heritage as parts, embracing their new-found personality thanks to Roma’s imagination and skills. The collections of these lively, salvaged collages whether they are human, animals, birds, or abstracts, lighten my spirits and inspire me to embrace the decorative in my life. I cannot wait to see where this direction goes for Ursula Roma, from large scale found sculpture to a charming book — it will capture her warm view of the world that I am happy to live in.
—Q. Cassetti, Designer & Illustrator, Ithaca, New York
"From ordinary dumpster junk to pure aesthetic satisfaction, Ursula Roma reinvents nature with excess doo-dads of our great industrial experiment. This debris didn't know it had the soul of a soaring sparrow, but Ursula knows better. Her skilled assemblages are whimsical, yet bold and sophisticated. I love her work."
– Ashley Holt, Designer & Illustrator, Spartanburg, SC
Almost always whimsical, sometimes nearly tribal but consistently unique, Ursula Roma's found object sculptures find their way into your heart the moment you look at them. Each piece becomes something entirely new as she breathes life into discarded items. The unloved turns into treasure in her hands.
— Nancy Stahl, Designer & Illustrator, NYC
I have been a fan of Ursula Roma’s work since first seeing it at Hartford University where Ursula was studying for her Masters’ Degree. She has the amazing ability of bringing together seemingly unrelated objects, and magically transforming them in something new; ART! The true definition of artistic genius. Always a pleasure to view her most recent work!
—Chris Spollen, Artist, Teacher, Tinkerer, NYC
Ursula Roma's found object fine art is recycling at its best -- in which the discarded or forgotten is given new form, purpose and personality through her artistic vision and skill. I especially love the found object characters she creates -- such as a thunderbird with wings made of nail files, or creatures and faces made from small machine parts. Despite the coldness of the materials and their formal, sometimes symmetrical, arrangement, what emerges always feels spontaneous, friendly, charming and fun.
— Jean Tuttle - Designer & Illustrator, Chicago, ILL
I found Ursula Roma’s sculptures to be complex, whimsical, creative and simply cool. She is a gifted artist with an imaginative eye for design. After seeing her exhibit at Wilmington College, I’ve questioned everything I’ve ever thrown out.
—Hal Shunk, Professor of Art & Gallery Director at Wilmington College
Ursula Roma’s work speaks not only to me, but to the visitors who see her three abstract wall sculptures I have hanging in my living room. Through her artistry, she lets us see that new and unexpected relationships are possible and desired.
—Ysaye Barnwell, Vocalist, Instrumentalist, Composer & Member of Sweet Honey in the Rock, Washington, DC
We have appreciated and enjoyed Ursula Roma's graphic art for years. In 2009, we commissioned a found object piece incorporating musical instruments, since both my wife and I are musicians. After discussing our ideas and interests with us, Ursula created a piece that exceeded our expectations, and was installed in our living room where we and our guests continue to love and admire it. In late 2012, we attended an exhibit of Ursula's works, and immediately were drawn to shapes and colors of the metal and wood of "Technical Wizard", which now hangs in our dining room. We particularly love how the afternoon sun brings the eyes, made from copper spools, to life.

Risks and challenges
My biggest risk is not raising enough funds to support visiting all 50 states. I have set my funding goal at the minimum amount necessary to complete 50 aliens and fulfill the various awards. Spacecraft repair can become costly, so any amount above this base will be enormously helpful in making my venture a galactic success! This project has the potential for positive astronomical reach and influence, so I anticipate an exciting journey through any challenges that I may face.
Another risk is touring the country with a truck that has billions and billions of miles on the odometer. A vehicle advertising sponsorship will help cover car maintenance on my epic trip. (See “Super Trooper” under Rewards)
Lastly, saying goodbye to the aliens that I rescue will be difficult. Letting go of the deep friendships we will form may also be challenging, but I will hold strong to those connections, and the wisdom these creatures share before departing to their home planets.
The mission of completing 50 aliens is an exciting and inspiring project for me. As a illustrator and designer for 25 years now, I have created many shirts, posters and books, and have high-quality vendors at the ready to produce these items.
