About this project
You sure are looking lovely today! Thank you for checking out my Kickstarter project. Let me tell you a little bit about myself and a few things about what I’m trying to do here.
When I moved to Austin during the summer of 2007, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with myself as I was fresh out of college and in a new city (and state!) a thousand miles away from my hometown in south Georgia. Austin is a really fun place, and I found myself enamored by a creative culture of live music and all things vintage and locally handmade. I realized I could have a good shot at being a clothing designer, so I dug out my sewing machine and set out to conquer the world with plus size fashion.
Fashion was always hard for me to come by when I was growing up as a plus size kid, but I somehow managed to create my own sense of style. For the past 2 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to impart that unique sense of style onto my beautiful, super sweet customers by way of my company savannahred. Through savannahred, I get to create custom and one of a kind dresses and skirts for women sizes 12 and up, calling it “curvy couture” to add a fun, little spin to what we know of as plus size fashion. What makes my company extra special is that it is not only designed and handmade in Texas, but it is an eco-friendly company by using mostly vintage or sustainable fabrics. Not only do I get to use my talent and my vision every day to help make plus size women feel and look great in what they wear, my heart for the environment through my business practices is also making an impact.
The dedication and devotion to my craft has only gotten stronger by the demands of my business. Now, I want to take the fun-loving and eco-friendly dresses of savannahred to places beyond Texas. By making my way to New York in the upcoming year, I will be able to show how ready I am to take savannahred to the top by engaging in 2 specific platforms specifically tailored for plus size retailers and designers.
In February, the Curvy Revolution will be taking place in New York City alongside Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. It is a Body Acceptance Movement that was started by Keke Dillard, an icon, advocate, and pioneer for positive body image for plus size women. According to the Curvy Revolution website (http://curvyrevolution.com), “The Curvy Revolution has created a network of various brands and initiatives to celebrate, inform, and inspire positive health, wellness, body image, and beauty while connecting with companies and supporters that are beneficial to the every day woman through mainstream mediums.” The pulse behind this event correlates with that of savannahred in every way. My company stands to provide beautifully made dresses for plus size women in order to adorn their curves and make them feel fabulous and sexy. This is a perfect way for my brand to connect with others that share the same vision within the industry, and the Curvy Revolution has become an international movement of inspirational connectedness that my company could definitely benefit from. Plus, the Curvy Revolution is happening during New York Fashion Week, and let’s face it – I’ve always wanted to go to New York Fashion Week! Being apart of it would be a dream come true!
A few months later, Full Figured Fashion Week will hit the NYC runways in June. Founded by Gwen DeVoe, an empowering curvy lady and owner of DeVoe Signature Events that produces fashion related events and provides training for models and management, Full Figured Fashion Week will run its 4th year this summer. It is uniquely dedicated to plus size fashion in that it is a separate event from any other fashion events that happen throughout the calendar year to give plus designers and retailers that extra spotlight that they definitely deserve. FFFW is especially meant for independent designers to showcase their work to a larger audience. On their website (http://fffweek.com), Ms. DeVoe says, “We are uniquely qualified to make this event a success because we work directly with plus size consumers and know what they want. They want great fitting, fashionable clothing that is readily available in stores and online. The plus size consumer is a loyal consumer and because quality fashion items are so hard to find, they will be loyal to brands that they like." I am so ready for savannahred to be one of those brands! Are you with me?!
These events are a gold mine for a designer like me, but I’m going to need your help in getting there. The costs associated with participation alone can be quite a feat for a small business, much less travel and hotel accommodations in New York City, but that’s where you come in! There are some really cool rewards in place to help guide your financial gifts, so don’t be shy! Every dollar counts and, of course, is deeply appreciated.
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my project. I’m really excited about the possibilities that these trips can bring, and I look forward to a future where plus size women can hope no more for fun, fabulous, sexy dresses that make them feel like movie stars. That’s exactly what savannahred does! Your support in that endeavor means the world to me, and I simply cannot wait to have you apart of this trip! Oh, and feel free to spread this project like love butter! Every effort goes a long way. Thank you again!
Lovelovelove!
