WHAT IS THE SAVAGE HABBIT MURALS PROJECT?
Founded in 2012, the Savage Habbit* Murals Project is a public art initiative project in Hudson County focused on strengthening the dialogue between the community.
Showcasing international, national, and local artists the project encourages the cultural revitalization of Hudson County, turning once desolate and unattractive spaces into vibrant murals, uniting residents regardless of cultural difference or language barrier.
*First and foremost Savage Habbit is an art blog - in the same way that squirrels, the rodent kings of the streets, have a savage habit of psychotically digging, we dig up the best of the street art world to supplement your days with our savage habbit and love for art.
WHAT WE DO?
Our ongoing Savage Habbit Murals Project has currently brought 13 murals to the streets of Jersey City, NJ and most recently 1 to Union City, NJ, all painted within 2 years and more are to come for the remaining wall season this year. Through our relationships with artists, via the art blog, we are able to work on a more personal level with them encouraging full artistic creatively on the walls with a variety of styles of work, ranging from traditional painterly approaches to bold and exciting characters... we like to think it's about creating a family experience.
Organized through the permission of property owners artists are hand selected to fit the property, neighborhood and/or business at the location to create an inspiring outdoor experience.
Art in Hudson County, NJ has recently started to regrow itself into a more viable and happening scene. Working off of this new found community energy and excitement for art, particularly public art, murals can be a powerful way to bring in cultural revenue to a neighborhood.
Murals are used by communities in very different ways and by creating a culture of muralism we can create an infrastructure that will facilitate mural making and at the same time educate those who are interested in making murals by bringing international influences, multigenerational collaborations and openly sharing the process of mural making with the public in general. At the end of the day muralism is communication and Hudson County has a lot to say and murals can become the outlet for these voices.
Ultimately, as avid art lovers, our goal is to provide a community within Hudson County that is ideal for the development of artistic creation and coexistence, generating an exchange between the community and residents through art to increase the visibility and cultural impact of the people and the area.
We love our home state... coincidentally our first mural was painted by Dulk from Spain who blessed us with this touching 'I <3 NJ' piece inspired by Hurricane Sandy... Jersey Strong.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
The Savage Habbit Murals Project is sustained through self-funding with the help of occasional donations by art enthusiasts and local supporters…
AND THIS MY FRIENDS IS WHERE THE KICKSTARTER KICKS IN!
We currently have 3 more walls to paint murals on in downtown Jersey City and a few more in the works up The Heights of Jersey City. As much as we want to paint everything by the season’s end we cannot continue on without more financial support to buy more paint and supplies for these murals.
Being that most of the murals up to this point have been funded out of our own pockets we have learned to really stretch and budget out every dollar. We only had $3000 to start when we began the murals project and with that money we were able to do 14 walls. Hopefully with your help we will be able to double the amount of murals and with this $3000 we will be able to get enough paint and supplies to finish all 3 murals in downtown Jersey City and kick off a few up in The Heights and Union City, culminating into an end of 2014/full 2015 wall season of new murals... and if we exceed our goal, well then expect to see even more great art in the streets!
What your pledges go toward:
- Paint - latex and spray
- Supplies - rollers, brushes, and all your other basic painting supplies
- Scaffolding/Lifts (if necessary)
- Food, water, and other essential goodies to sustain our artists
This is an opportunity to be a part of a greater community project. We are eager to build upon what we have already accomplished and bring Hudson County to the forefront of the current global street art scene.

A BIG OL' THANK YOU!
We want to thank everyone in advance for any donations made to our project via the Kickstarter and to those who have supported us from the beginning - friends, family, artists, and local businesses. Without the love we have received from the community this project wouldn't be what it has grown into today.
And of course, a heaping thank to all of the artists that donated rewards to help continue our vision in Hudson County. Each one of them gave a gift to our community through their mural and we are honored to have worked with such an incredible group of people.
Much squirrel love!
Recent Press about the Savage Habbit Murals Project:
Risks and challenges
As our project is ongoing and has been successful for nearly two years, only some sort of natural disaster or misfortune could stop us. It is only limited by how many walls we can get and how much paint we can gather. With confidence we can say that we will not stop with this one Kickstarter or the walls we currently have, we will continue to expand the project into something that engages and enriches Hudson County, providing a creative outlet for artists in our streets.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
