Gay Passover: the gayest version of Exodus ever told

Enter the world of Neil Patrick Harris, an orphan boy of conservative parents, as he finds his way out of Middle America and into the promised land of muscled men and overpriced lattes.

As a gay Jew, I wrote this short work of fiction in 2015 as a means to share the Seder story with my non-Jewish friends in the LGBTQ community, in a way they could relate to and laugh along with. Now I'm making it available for you to buy and share with your friends and family.

The book starts in a suburban Middle American town, where residents living there are plagued with totally basic hair-dos, and they live in ugly homes. Soon the gays arrive, fixing up the neighborhoods and throwing fabulous wedding parties.

The town mayor begins to worry the entire town will turn gay, and orders families to kill their gay babies.

One mother couldn't bear to do it, though, and so one child would be spared and eventually become Neil Patrick Harris, the adoptive son of conservative senators.

The backstory

I wanted to take the best traditions of Passover and re-cast them for gay audiences. Seder for Jews is about remembering our shared cultural heritage and road to self-discovery. Now it can be for the LGBTQ community, too.

"Gay Passover" follows Moses but recasts him as Neil. I drew on a lot of personal experience and also popular cultural references and stereotypes from the 1990s and 2000s.

The story has no real religious component and only very loosely resembles the traditional Seder tale. You can still make this book the main Haggadah at your next Seder party, or if you're not hosting anything, you can also just buy it to read and enjoy a humorous story written by me.

Some favorite moments

  • Let's just say "The Burning Bush" is a lesbian bar in Kansas.
  • The 10 plagues for suburban straight people include skinny jeans and glitter bombs.
  • If Cher could turn back time, you bet she would have declared herself god of the gays, like she does in this story.

The Book

The book will be printed in a paperback booklet that'll measure about 5.5" x 8.5" with a weighted cover. I am still consulting with several professionals on the other physical parameters, but right now I am favoring a matte cover on a perfect-bound booklet, with uncoated, full-color interior pages.

The entire book's illustrations are being done by a very talented Max Charnley. As of this writing, Max's take in the funds raised by this project totals up to about 50 percent... money he's very much earned thanks to his brilliant imagery.

The Dinner Party

This isn't just a story. Just like a traditional Seder haggadah, it's meant to be read aloud over dinner, with appropriate breaks written in to drink cocktails and discuss historical elements of the gay community. Haggadahs are traditionally bought as sets; You buy multiple of them so everyone at the table has one to read aloud and enjoy.

This campaign is set up so you can buy one book if you just want to read the story for fun. But if you want to run your own dinner party, buy a few of them!

In addition to the story, some sections I've been hard at work on that pair well with a dinner:

  • A "Gay-der" plate section (and maybe merch to come!)
  • The 4 questions: by the four twinks, maybe?
  • Recipes! I'm including my favorite ice cream and cocktail concoction, but also some traditional dishes
  • Maybe a song / game or two

The Project Timeline

The story is already written and is going through some nominal edits. Max Charnley, the illustrator, is about halfway done with custom illustrations with a complete date set by early March.

Backers of this project should expect to receive their 'Gay Passover' books in early April, ahead of Passover starting on April 20th, 2019.

All U.S. and international purchasers (where available) will receive their copies via priority shipment within a week of the campaign ending its run.

Risks and challenges

This project carries minimal risk because the story is already written. The illustrations are very much underway and fully story-boarded. We are still finalizing a relationship with printers, so there are small risk factors associated with that.
