SASSAS is seeking your support for sound. at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, an exciting aural reimagining of one of the most iconic Los Angeles region locations in SASSAS's sound. concert series, taking place on October 5, 2014.

A historically complex site, the Overlook resides at the juncture of industry and parkland / preserve while offering views of the entire Los Angeles Basin. Since 2011, SASSAS has been commissioning composers to address this unique location for concerts that are presented to the public free of charge. This year’s concert features new works by Los Angeles area artists and musicians Matt Barbier, Sarah Petersen and Southern California Sound Ecology.

Although the concert is free, the cost of producing it is $10,000 which pays commissioning fees for the artists, covers the on-site technical crew and gear, and includes promotion, insurance and other producing costs. SASSAS has already received $5000 from a Culver City Performing Arts Grant so we’ve raised half the funding! Help us continue producing concerts at the Overlook by matching Culver City’s contribution and backing this unique event. And we're a 501(c)(3) non profit so your contribution is tax deductible!

About SASSAS:

SASSAS’s programming is unique in considering the relationship between artist and site as pivotal to new music. Throughout its 15 years, the sound. concert series has activated an array of locations as diverse as the performances themselves–from landmark modernist architectural sites to a historic carousel, from a budget motel to the wilds of an urban park. SASSAS's radical recontextualizing of sound and place creates a space for the listener to open to the experience of new sounds.

Trombonist and composer Matt Barbier explores experimental intonation, noise and the physical processes of the trombone. He is actively engaged in the emerging field of just intonation for brass instruments. Past works have imagined the sound of light paths, creating formal equivalents between the sonic and visual, a process he will use in creating a new work for the Overlook.

Artist Sarah Petersen’s Hums explore the production of sympathetic vibrations in groups. She has led Hums at the Shangrila performance festival in Joshua Tree, with the Women’s Center for Creative Work (WCCW) and at Concord, an artist space located on a school bus in Glassell Park, California. This interactive project engages the audience in personal and communal participation. Guests are invited to join in experiencing the shared resonance of humming—navigating the interactive hum of voice, body and surrounding environment. Sarah will design a new communal hum for the environment of the Overlook.

Southern California Sound Ecology is an artist collaborative that creates soundscapes using unprocessed field recordings. Their work explores the external environment as constructed through sound and location. Using a combination of natural and ambient sounds both pre-recorded and sampled on site, their sonic collages are played like instruments.

Risks and challenges

SASSAS has 15 years of experience in producing concerts at locations similar to the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, as well as two prior concerts at this site. We've developed a great working relationship with the California State Park rangers who support the work we've done to date.

One of the obvious challenges of the Overlook is weather, and we've been lucky so far! But even if sprinkles occur, we can move the concert to the BHSO pavilion which is open to the park on 3 sides.
