Ultimate Scheme is a game for 2 to 4 players, in which you are an evil genius or criminal mastermind, taking on the role of a faction such as the Dark Masters of Darkness, Professor Roboto, or the Cult of Tentacly Doom. You direct your minions across the globe to gather resources and complete nefarious schemes such as Build a Freeze Ray or Market Evil Soda. Each scheme earns you progress toward your Ultimate Scheme, your secret victory condition for the game. When you've completed your secret Ultimate Scheme, you win the game!

Back Ultimate Scheme at either the base game level, the Expanded level which includes the Ultimate Scheme expansion: Plan Number B, or even the Deluxe level that includes special custom tokens. Higher reward tiers let you make your own mark on the game, or ship the game in its own aluminum attache case!

We have Customs-Friendly shipping for Ultimate Scheme! Shipping costs are added to your reward level when you select the shipping destination. More shipping details in the Shipping Info section below!

"Ultimate Scheme is loads of fun." We sat down with WIll James of GeekDad for an early look: https://geekdad.com/2016/05/kickstarter-ultimate-scheme-2/

Greg Schloesser of Opinionated Gamers says in his review: "There is more to the game than I surmised. No, it isn’t a deep strategic challenge, but it does present players with numerous choices and forces them to adjust their plans as the game progresses. But much more important than that, the game is simply fun to play…and you get to play the bad guy!"

Ultimate Scheme is @FailroadExpress's Kickstarter Game of the Month for May!

Owen K.C. Stephens says: “I thoroughly enjoyed Ultimate Scheme when I had the pleasure of crushing Rich Baker in a game session. As a result of the X Factor, it has HUGE replay value, creating new opportunities to try different strategies with every game session. If the idea of using complex plots, ninja agents, the global coffee supply, and schemes requiring Unobtainium sounds like fun way to conquer there world, this boardgame is for you! Five of five stars. Would scheme again.

Rob Schwalb says: "I had the opportunity to play Ultimate Scheme with Rich Baker at AcadeCon and I had a great time! Everyone at the table picked up the game quick and by the end we could see the intricacies of the design and how it facilitated a variety of win strategies. This is a fantastic game and I can’t wait to add a copy to my library. Highly recommended!"

Jennifer Clarke-Wilkes says: "Power corrupts, but absolute power is for the experts. This is a fun and eminently replayable game of plots and counter plots."

"I had more fun than I thought I would!" - Russ at Gamerati Game Day.

Here's part 1 of a play-through video featuring the Dead Gentlemen's Nathan Rice and Steve Wolbrecht (part 2 and part 3 are also available on YouTube):

More to Come!

Ultimate Scheme works for 2 to 4 players, and takes about an hour to play on average - slightly more than an hour with four players, and a bit less than an hour with just two. In the video above, Rich provides an introduction to the game and a walkthrough of the turn order. The card types are listed below, and we have a detailed breakdown of the rules components on our website.

Setup

In Ultimate Scheme, you play as one of the 10+ Factions of the game, such as Gigaton Industries or W.R.A.I.T.H. You also draw one Ultimate Scheme, which might be something like Found an Evil Coffee Empire, Start a Land War in Asia, or Ruin Christmas.

You begin play with two minions, placed in the starting location indicated on the Faction card. You'll also draw three Scheme cards and an Action Card.

Turn Order

Each turn is broken up into five steps. Starting with the First Player, all players complete the first step, then all players complete the second step, and so on. After all steps have been completed, the player to the left of the first player becomes the new First Player for the next round.

  • Draw Step. Each player draws one criminal, subversion, or genius scheme from his or her choice of one of the three Scheme decks.
  • Move Step. Each player chooses one of his minions and moves the minion to an adjacent location. After all players have moved one minion, they each take a second move in turn order. During this phase, a player might end up moving one minion twice, or two minions once. A player can always elect to not move a minion.
  • Resource Step. Each player chooses one of his minions and gains resources from that minion's location.. After all players have collected resources once, they collect a second time, in turn order. Resources cannot be gained from a location more than once per round, regardless of whether the location was depleted by an ally or enemy minion.
  • Execute Step. Each player can execute a Scheme, provided the player has the appropriate resources to spend and has a minion in the Scheme's location. There is no limit to the number of schemes a player can complete in a given turn, provided that the resource and location requirements are met.
  • End Step. If Victory has not been achieved, any minions in hidden locations return to their home cities. The First Player changes, and play continues in the next round.
Here's a closer look at the primary game elements::
A Faction Card. Each Faction has its own start location and a special ability. Professor Roboto here starts with additional schemes, and gains more Science every turn.

What’s even better than pulling off scores of nefarious plots and capers? Pulling off dozens more, of course! Plan Number B is an expansion to the Ultimate Scheme game that provides you with more factions, more schemes, more action cards, and more mayhem in general.

Plan Number B begins as a set of 40 new cards, introducing the Interpol Agent to the mix and up to 4 new factions for the Ultimate Scheme game, but here's the best part - Plan Number B gets bigger and better as we hit our stretch goals. What's on the table for Plan Number B stretch goals?
  • Interpol Agent: A new game element that lets you use the forces of law and order as your unwitting pawns to obstruct your rival's plans.
  • The Event Deck: a set of cards that puts a new twist on each round of the game.
  • More Schemes: a new category of nefarious schemes you can undertake.
  • Single Player Mode: for when you want to play with yourself.
  • More Factions, Locations, Ultimate Schemes, Madness, and Mayhem!
To add Plan Number B to your Ultimate Scheme reward, select the DELUXE ULTIMATE SCHEME reward, or any of the rewards above $65. Depending on manufacturing time frame, the expansion may be shipped separately after the basic game is delivered.

If we surpass our initial goal, we'll be able to increase the value of the reward levels by adding more content to the Plan Number B expansion.

At 250 backers at the EXPANDED and DELUXE levels combined, we'll add the Event Deck to Plan Number B!
At $20,000 raised, we'll include cards for single player mode in Plan Number B, and make a digital version of the single player mode available online for download.

We'll unlock more stuff as we hit our stretch goals!

We have no other add-ons planned for Ultimate Scheme beyond what is offered in the reward tiers. We want to keep fulfillment simple and straight-forward, so that we can quickly get the game printed and shipped out to all of our backers. That said, if there's something special you want, or if you want to combine reward levels, let us know in the Comments thread or feel free to message us privately and let us know what you're looking for, and we'll see what we can do!

Shipping rates are calculated based on your country when you select your reward tier, and is not reflected in the base reward pledges.

We are partnering with Ship Naked to provide delivery to backers. We had a positive experience with them in shipping our previous Kickstarter project, Primeval Thule 5e, and we think they'll be more than ready to handle our Ultimate Scheme. They'll ship all over the world!

We are using Ship Naked's Customs-Friendly Worldwide shipping option, which means that not only is the shipping cost a little lower for us, shipments will be EU-, Canada-, UK-, Aussie-, NZ-, and US-Friendly.

Ultimate Scheme has been in the works for quite some time. We first brought a version of the game to the First Exposure Playtest Hall at Gen Con 2014, and have been testing and refining the game ever since. At Gen Con in 2015, we provided demos in our booth and continued to get feedback and reactions from fans. We've been to local groups like Gamerati to show off the game and get even more feedback.

Sasquatch Game Studio is a small game publishing company formed by three longtime game industry professionals. We initially came together to produce the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting for multiple RPG platforms, and also produced Princes of the Apocalypse, a big adventure for 5th edition D&D. We are all Wizards of the Coast veterans, and we have longstanding relationships with some of the top talent in the biz. For Ultimate Scheme, we brought in two excellent artists: Lee Moyer to help us nail down the game board and design elements, and Claudio Pozas to provide our card illustrations.

Richard Baker is a best-selling author and award-winning game designer. In addition to extensive RPG design credits, he’s worked on several boardgames and miniature games of note, including the Origins award-winning Conquest of Nerath and Axis and Allies Miniatures game. He also contributed extensively to Risk Godstorm and Axis and Allies Revised.

David Noonan has more than 50 RPG products among his credits, and has written extensively for video games, including Motiga's upcoming Gigantic team action game for Windows 10 and Xbox One.

Stephen Schubert is an award-winning game designer/developer mostly known for his extensive work for D&D and the D&D Miniatures Game.

Lee Moyer has worked as an illustrator on numerous games—RPGs, computer games, CCGs, and more. He collaborated with Keith Baker on The Doom that Came to Atlantic City, published by Cryptozoic Entertainment, and served as the art director (and lead illustrator) for the 13th Age Roleplaying Game.

Last but not least, Claudio Pozas contributed to Fantasy Flight’s Star Wars and Lord of the Rings LCGs, the Dungeon Crawler ECG by Gifted Vision, and the Ennie Award-winning Counter Collection series by Fiery Dragon, as well as numerous RPGs.

Risks and challenges

This is our second campaign for the Ultimate Scheme game. After the first attempt failed to fund, we reviewed our campaign from top to bottom to figure out how we can reach success. We took in feedback and created a (hopefully) more engaging cover design, and shot a new pitch video with better production values.

We also looked for a manufacturer that could work in smaller quantities, so that we won't incur as big of an expense to create more product than we might need. We simplified the components, replacing the more expensive wooden resource cubes with punch-out sheets, which also allows us to create art more representative of the game's resources. Overall, we reduced the cost of the game, and by reducing weight and box size, we've reduced the expected shipping costs as well.

As a result, we can offer the game at a lower price point, passing our savings on to our backers. In addition, the smaller quantities means a smaller funding threshold, which means that the project success is even more likely.

We've run two successful Kickstarter campaigns, both for RPG products. Ultimate Scheme is our first board game Kickstarter project, and we've made an effort to anticipate the additional work this project requires to follow it through manufacturing and shipping. We will keep backers apprised of our manufacturing and shipping timelines.

Plan Number B will require some design and playtesting as we extend the expansion through additional stretch goals. We anticipate having the expansion ready to deliver at the same time as the core game. If it is not ready in time, we'll ship it separately after the core game.
