Thanks to our work on 5e adventures such as Princes of the Apocalypse and Lost Mines of Phandelver, we’re all leveled up in the latest edition of the game. We’re ready to bring Primeval Thule to the 5e audience—and you can help us!
To select an add-on from below, click the Manage blue button next to your Pledge, then change your Pledge Amount by adding the amount for each add-on you select. More detail on the add-ons is available in the Add-Ons section further down the page. Please note that Fantasy Grounds add-ons are available to any backer with a DIGITAL THULE bundle, and second copies of books require at least one book in your original reward tier. International backers requesting more than one softcover only need to pay the extra $10 shipping fee once!
Inspired by the literary traditions of sword-and-sorcery adventure, lost worlds, and fantastic horror, the land of Primeval Thule is a savage, intense campaign setting. This is a world of barbarian freebooters and dark magic, star-spawned monstrosities and elder gods, fabulous treasures and mind-blasting terror. Hunt saber-tooth cats in steaming jungles—explore ancient cities buried in the relentless ice— battle dark cults and bloody-handed tyrants in decadent city-states. A world of glory and riches is yours to seize!
Thule’s influences are classic pulp fantasy stories such as Robert E. Howard’s Conan stories, H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos, and Edgar Rice Burrough’s tales of savage worlds, as brought to life by the unforgettable illustrations of artists such as Frank Frazetta and Roy Krenkel. These lurid stories and images of brawling action and cosmic horror are the bones, blood, and sinews of the Primeval Thule campaign—and it’s fantasy adventure the way it was meant to be played.
Want to read about Thule for yourself? The Primeval Thule Traveler's Guide
, a 36-page PDF that serves as our introduction to this awesome setting, is now available for free at DrivethruRPG!
We believe that a campaign setting book is a toolkit, so the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting book is jammed full of resources for the enterprising gamemaster. We hope you’ll enjoy the adventures we present and the storylines we describe—but we know that you’re going to find a hundred ways to use the material in this book to build your own compelling storylines and epic adventures!
Your journey into the newest version of this fantastic setting begins with the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting book. This is a 272-page, full-color book, including all of the following:
Thulean Character Backgrounds: Nineteen unique narratives allow you to ground your character in the setting and gain access to a variety of new powers and abilities. Are you a Dhari hunter, born of the wilderness tribes? A sacred slayer, sworn to destroy the enemies of your temple? Or perhaps a wandering freebooter, always on the lookout for a prize worthy of your appetites?
Atlantean Character Race: Survivors of a terrible cataclysm, Atlanteans represent the most brilliant and advanced branch of humankind.
Atlas of Thule: A description of the city-states, tribes, ruins, and hidden secrets of Thule, the lost land of the north.
Poster Map: A 24-by-30-inch full-color poster map of the lost continent of Thule and the surrounding area is included in your campaign setting book, filled with hundreds of unique locations and adventure sites.
Monsters: Scores of new Thulean monsters and beasts, ranging from mighty Ice Age animals to the survivors of terrible elder races still lurking in this primordial landscape. Populate your campaign with brutish beastmen, saber-tooth cats, and hideous starspawn!
Villains: Major and minor villainous groups to challenge the heroes of the setting, including the pitiless wizard-lords of the Black Circle, the cruel Slavers of Marg, and the despicable cultists of Great Old Ones such as Cthulhu, Hastur, or Nyarlathotep.
Running a Thulean Campaign: Advice and guidance to the gamemaster on running games with a savage theme, pulp fantasy motifs, and campaign story arcs.
Adventures, Adventures, Adventures: Thule is a land of lost cities and forbidding ruins. You’ll find maps and descriptions of numerous adventure sites, as well as three complete, ready-to-play adventures set in this savage world. You can play for months right out of the book, or years with the adventure-building tools we provide!
Digital Extras: DIGITAL THULE backers also receive PDF files for the 6 double-sided character reference cards, the continent map PDF, and PDF files for 5th edition versions of our first three Thule adventures.
We believe that we have a fun, compelling—dare we say awesome?—vision for an old-school fantasy world delivered with passion and a 21st-century design aesthetic. We already have a strong book with great writing, excellent artwork, and top-notch layout. We need your help to raise funds to put the finishing touches on 5e Thule and get a high-quality print run.
We are making the 5th edition of Thule in both digital and analog formats. Back at the DIGITAL THULE level, and you'll get the Campaign Setting and any further digital stretch goals we'll make. If you just want the book, then select the ANALOG THULE backer level (we'll still send you the initial three adventures in PDF format). And if you want both, the BOOK + DIGITAL THULE level will provide the hardcover with all of the digital files and stretch goals.
Act fast, and you can get one of a limited number of DELUXE THULE pledges. The deluxe package includes a sturdy 4-panel GM screen, six cardstock PC-focused character reference cards, and a poster map of the city of Quodeth.
UPDATE: We've added new DELUXE THULE reward tiers! These tiers include the full Deluxe Pack (Screen, Reference Cards, Quodeth Map), but because we will need to print them in China, the screens will not be delivered until later in 2015.
We'll be able to print a number of leatherbound hardcovers, for those that want a campaign setting with a bit more class (or leather, at least). Also, the reorganization of the book for this version has freed up a couple of pages of space. We're filling some of that with a bit of new design, but we'll also let a select few backers provide their own description of an adventure site or legendary item, and we'll include that in the revised book — just select the ARTIFICER or DUNGEONEER level, but be prepared to send us your ideas shortly after the Kickstarter campaign has ended. UPDATE: ARTIFICER and DUNGEONEER levels now also include a complimentary Deluxe Pack.
We'll also run a game for you, either during a convention we are already attending (SASQUATCH SIGHTING), or as a special engagement (SUMMON SASQUATCH), for a particularly memorable event. Send us a Kickstarter message if you'd like to discuss what sort of arrangements you'd like to make.
A Note on Shipping: While we will ship worldwide, the base pledge levels include just the cost of shipping within the U.S., and Kickstarter will calculate additional shipping costs once you've chosen your backer level. International backers might consider grouping up for the GROUP THULE level, or adding books via add-ons to help reduce the per-book shipping cost.
Timing: Lots of Kickstarters take a long time to deliver, but that won’t be the case here. We’ve got the content of the book finished and we’re using a US printer for this edition of our world setting. We only need to have our typesetter lay out parts of the book again and incorporate the changes in the rules, Since the book is essentially done, the PDF of Primeval Thule 5e will be ready within weeks of the end of the campaign. Since we’ll be printing domestically, we'll expect to ship your 5e Thule by November.
Stretch Goal Delivery: Our early estimate for delivery of stretch goals, such as the new adventure PDFs, is around the same time the hardcover books ship - by early November. The stretch goals will be commissioned once the crowdfunding effort is complete. By nature, they require new design, and so we'll give our authors a few weeks to turn around the text, followed by editing and layout/typesetting. We will be proactive in updating the delivery schedule for these items.
A note on International Shipping of Softcovers: If you want more than one softcover, and you are an international backer outside the UK, you only need to add the $10 shipping charge once. So, for example, if you want the GM and Player's softcovers ($24 each), you'd increase your pledge by $58 (24 + 24 + 10). If you want all three softcovers delivered internationally, you'd pay $81. (24 + 24 +23 +10)

Get a spare 5e copy to share around the table, or buy Thule in a second rule set (choose from 4e, Pathfinder, or 13th Age compatible versions - you can tell us which rules sets you want in the post-Kickstarter survey). Non-US backers please add an additional $10 to cover increased shipping charges.

If we receive contributions beyond our target number, we’ll be able to generate even more exciting Primeval Thule content. We've lined up designers that have worked with us (and 5e) before, including Steve Townshend, Rob Schwalb, and Steve Winter. We'll engage our artists to create awesome new art and maps as appropriate for each stretch goal, ensuring that the extra content you get meets our standards of quality.
Digital stretch goals will be sent to all backers at the $20 digital-only level, and those at the $75 level and above—any level that includes the DIGITAL THULE bundle. The higher the campaign goes, the bigger you’re making the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting for yourself, and everybody else! That’s pretty key, so we’ll say it again: Your reward gets bigger and better every time someone else decides to back us.
of contributions, we will produce a brand-new PDF THULE adventure of about 8-10 pages, written by long-time industry vet Steve Winter
, designer of Tyranny of Dragons and a host of other RPG products.
Success! At $23,000 of contributions, we will create the THULE GM Companion PDF, and start by filling it with new content that includes at least 6 new monsters and an adventure site. We'll add even more content with future stretch goals.
of contributions, we’ll add another PDF THULE adventure (again, about 8 to 10 pages), written by Robert J Schwalb
, one of our co-designers on Princes of the Apocalypse, and creator of the recently Kickstarted Shadow of the Demon Lord.
Success! At $33,000 of contributions, we'll add even more content to the THULE GM Companion, bringing it to at least 16 pages. As it gets bigger, it'll be a pretty good standalone supplement!
Success! At $38,000, we're going to make the THULE Player's Companion PDF. This new addition will bring at least 16 pages of more options for characters in THULE, including new builds, spells, and background options. The PDF will be included in all backers that get the Digital Bundle.
Success! At $43,000, we're adding 8 more pages to the THULE Player's Companion PDF, and we'll also make a full-color softcover Player's Companion available as an add-on for $24 including shipping! (another $10 for international shipping outside the UK)
Success! UPDATE: At $43,000, we'll also make the softcover THULE GM Companion and the softcover THULE Adventure Anthology available. The GM Companion add-on is available for $24, and includes all the stretch goal GM content. The Adventure Anthology is $23, and combines the first two stretch goal adventures into one full-color softcover. Both softcovers will get bigger with further stretch goals! Please add $10 for international shipping of one or more softcovers outside the US or UK.
Success! At $48,000, the THULE GM Companion gets 8 more pages of threats and exciting adventure sites and intriguing plot twists. That brings it up to 24+ pages.
At $53,000, we'll add more content (at least 8 pages) to the THULE Player's Companion, making it 32+ pages of player content. The add-on cost will remain the same!
At $58,000, we'll add more stuff to the GM Companion, making it at least 32 pages.
At $63,000, we will commission Steve Townshend to write for us an awesome THULE adventure. We'll collect all of the 5e THULE adventures into a softcover anthology, and make the softcover available as an add on for $23, including shipping! (another $10 for international shipping outside the UK)
At $68,000, there's even more stuff in the Player's Companion - giving us a 40 page PDF (or softcover, if you've added it on).
And of course, if more support is forthcoming, we’ll keep adding content and awesome game accessories to your Primeval Thule experience!
