A hearty "Thank You!" to all of the backers that have helped make Primeval Thule a reality. We will continue to provide updates in the updates section of the Kickstarter page, as well as on our website and facebook page.
If you missed your chance to pledge on Kickstarter, we are starting a "slacker backer" drive on our website. We will continue to take pledges for some reward levels via PayPal on our PayPal pledge page. Check the Sasquatch pledge page for details on being a slacker backer!
Please note: If you back at any level that grants a rules-specific PDF during the Kickstarter, you'll now get three PDFs: one compatible with Pathfinder, one compatible with 13th Age, and one compatible with 4th edition D&D. Yes, the reward levels are still labeled Pathfinder, 13th Age, and 4th edition D&D, because we can't change them at this point. But no matter which one you sign up for, you'll get all three.
Founded by long-time industry veterans Rich Baker, David Noonan, and Stephen Schubert, Sasquatch Game Studio is creating Primeval Thule, a savage, intense campaign setting.
Inspired by the literary traditions of sword-and-sorcery adventure, lost worlds, and fantastic horror, the land of Primeval Thule is a savage, intense campaign setting. This is a world of barbarian freebooters and dark magic, star-spawned monstrosities and elder gods, fabulous treasures and mind-blasting terror. Hunt saber-tooth tigers in steaming jungles—explore ancient cities buried in the relentless ice—battle dark cults and bloody-handed tyrants in decadent city-states. A world of glory and riches is yours to seize!
Thule’s influences are classic pulp fantasy stories such as Robert E. Howard’s Conan stories, H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos, and Edgar Rice Burrough’s tales of savage worlds, as brought to life by the unforgettable illustrations of artists such as Frank Frazetta and Roy Krenkel. These lurid stories and images of brawling action and cosmic horror are the bones, blood, and sinews of the Primeval Thule campaign—and it’s fantasy adventure the way it was meant to be played.

We believe that a campaign setting book is a toolkit that a great gamemaster will use to build his or her own game, so the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting book is jammed full of tools and resources for the enterprising gamemaster. We hope you’ll enjoy the adventures we present and the storylines we describe—but we know that you’re going to find a hundred ways to use the material in this book to build your own compelling storylines and epic adventures!
Your journey into the fantastic realms of Primeval Thule begins with the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting book. This is a 256-page, full-color book, available in the following formats:
Hardcover book, with poster map attached
Deluxe hardcover book, with GM screen, an additional poster map of the city-state of Quodeth, and player reference cards
Premium limited edition leatherbound hardcover book, signed and numbered (includes the DM screen, poster map of Quodeth, and player reference cards of the deluxe edition). UPDATE: also includes 8.5x11 print of the cover art by Todd Lockwood.
The Primeval Thule Campaign Setting includes all of the following…
Thulean Character Narratives: More than a dozen unique themes allow you to ground your character in the setting and gain access to a variety of new powers and abilities. Are you a savage hunter, born of the wilderness tribes? A sacred slayer, sworn to destroy the enemies of your temple? A wandering freebooter, always on the lookout for a prize worthy of your appetites? Or perhaps you are a keeper of mysteries, initiated in the forbidden lore of elder times.
Atlantean Character Race: Survivors of a terrible cataclysm, Atlanteans represent the most brilliant and advanced branch of humankind.
Atlas of Thule: A description of the city-states, tribes, ruins, and hidden secrets of Thule, a lost land from a bygone age.
Poster Map: A 24 by 30 inch full color poster map of the lost continent of Thule and the surrounding seas is included in your campaign setting book, filled with hundreds of unique locations and adventure sites.
Monsters: Populate your campaign with brutish beastmen, saber-tooth tigers, and hideous starspawn! The book introduces dozens of new Thulean monsters and beasts, ranging from savage predators to the survivors of terrible elder races still lurking in this primordial landscape.
Villains: Sinister groups to challenge the heroes of the setting, including the pitiless wizard-lords of the Ebon Circle, the cruel Slavers of Pnoth, and the despicable cultists of Great Old Ones such as Cthulhu, Hastur, or Nyarlathotep.
Running a Thulean Campaign: Advice and guidance to the gamemaster on running games with a savage theme, pulp fantasy motifs, campaign story arcs, quick reference lists for on-the-fly improvisation, and a cult design system to populate your own Thule campaign with worshippers of forbidden gods!
Adventures, Adventures, Adventures: Thule is a land of lost cities and forbidding ruins. You’ll find maps and descriptions of dozens of adventure sites, as well as several complete, ready-to-play adventures set in this savage world. You can play for months right out of the book, or years with the adventure-building tools we provide!

As you know, sasquatches are rare; in fact, there are only three of us. We’re a small company, working out of our homes. We believe that we have a fun, compelling—dare we say awesome?—vision for an old-school D&D world delivered with passion and a 21st-century design aesthetic. But writing, illustrating, printing, and shipping a high-quality campaign setting book isn't free. We’re also committed to working with the best people in the RPG business and paying them the way they deserve to be paid. So, to do this right, we need your help.
To support Primeval Thule, all you need to do is click on the Back This Project button at the upper right-hand side of this page (right beside the video), or select the backer level of your choice. Kickstarter will walk you through the process and take your pledge and billing information. It’s a snap!
We intend to make three different versions of the Primeval Thule book, one for each of the RPG systems we’re supporting. Whether you’re a fan of Pathfinder, 4th Edition D&D, or the excellent new 13th Age system, you’ll be able to bring Thule to your gaming table. When our Kickstarter campaign closes, you’ll receive a backer survey from Kickstarter. At that time, you’ll be able to select the rules set you prefer for your Primeval Thule book.
Many Kickstarter campaigns become quite complicated, and offer rewards and goodies that really don’t have much to do with the actual creative project. We want to keep our campaign simple and straightforward—time and effort we spend on making T-shirts is time and effort we’re taking away from making the best RPG setting we can make. However, there are a few add-ons we think we should make available.
To make an add-on to your pledge, just add the value listed to your existing pledge. You’ll be able to tell us how you want to use your total pledge during post-Kickstarter survey and communication.
NEW!! +$50 Signed Todd Lockwood Cover Art Print
Add $50 to your pledge of $40 or more, and we'll also mail you a signed, 16"x24" (~40x60cm), full-color print of the Primeval Thule cover art by Todd Lockwood. This print will ship separately, and shipping is included to any address in the US, Canada, or Mexico. Please add $15 for shipping outside North America.
+$15/+$35 Active Duty Military Upgrade
Add $15 to your Primeval Thule Setting Book or $35 to your Deluxe Primeval Thule Setting Book reward level, and we’ll upgrade your setting book to the next trim level. This is a savings of $10 or $20 for our active duty armed forces personnel to say thank you for your service. We'll want to verify your status, either through a base, APO or FPO mailing address, appropriate .mil email address, or via the dmdc.osd.mil site.
+$10 Primeval Thule Soundtrack
Add $10 to your pledge and get the following 4 tracks from the Ambient Environments soundtrack by Blue Moon Studios: moaning caverns, the tunnels deep, the dark forest, and frozen tundra.
+$15 PDF, Second Copy of Digital Thule (Obsolete)
Originally intended to allow you to pick up a PDF for a second system, this add-on is now obsolete, as we are now providing all three versions of the PDF to backers whose reward originally included a PDF for only one game system.
+$40 Upgrade Deluxe to Premium
For backers at the Merchant Prince or Dungeon Builder pledge levels only, add $40 to your pledge to upgrade to a premium leatherbound book.
+$50 Basic Book, Second Copy
If you want a second copy of the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting, we’ll be happy to send it to you. Just add $50 to your pledge of $60 or more. Get a spare copy to share around the table, or buy Thule in a second rule set (you can tell us which rules sets you want in the post-Kickstarter survey). Limit 2 of this add-on per backer.
+$75 Deluxe Book, Second Copy
If you want a second copy of the Deluxe Primeval Thule Campaign Setting book (including the DM screen and additional maps that come with it, of course), add $75 to your pledge of $80 or more. You can tell us which rules set or sets you want in the post-Kickstarter survey. Limit 2 of this add-on per backer.
+$125 Premium Book, Second Copy
If you want an additional copy of the premium leatherbound Primeval Thule Campaign Setting book and its accessories, just add $125 to your pledge of $125 or more. You’ll be able to choose the rules set or sets you want in the backer survey later. Limit 2 of this add-on per backer.
If we receive contributions beyond our target number, we’ll be able to offer several exciting stretch goal rewards for our contributors. Most of these apply to ALL reward levels—by helping us to reach our stretch goals, you’re making the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting bigger and better for yourself, and everybody else!
That’s pretty key, so we’ll say it again: Your Primeval Thule book gets bigger and better as more people back us. Tell your friends!
At $70,000, the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting book will include an adventure by the world-renowned creator of the Forgotten Realms, Ed Greenwood! In addition, the Accursed Trio - Ross Watson, John Dunn, and Jason Marker - the designers behind the upcoming Accursed: A Savage Worlds RPG Setting, are generously providing a bonus PDF adventure to our Digital Thule bundle if we reach this goal.
At $80,000, we will increase the size of the book to 288 pages. With the additional page count we’ll include more character narratives, more monsters, and an adventure by noted Pathfinder and 4th Edition designer Owen Stephens.
At $90,000, we’ll continue to expand the book by another 16 pages. In addition, we’ll add an additional poster map to the Deluxe and Premium editions—a tactical map gridded in 1-inch squares depicting a key adventure locale from the setting book.
At $100,000, we’ll bring the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting book to a full 320 pages, including additional character origins, terrifying new monsters, and an adventure by Pathfinder RPG lead designer Jason Bulmahn.
And if more support is forthcoming, we’ll keep adding content and awesome game accessories to your Primeval Thule experience!
We’re a brand-new game publishing company formed by three longtime RPG industry professionals. We’re all Wizards of the Coast veterans, and we worked and played together for years on 3rd and 4th Edition D&D. We have longstanding relationships with some of the top talent in the RPG biz, and we’re assembling a dream team to make Primeval Thule a reality. Here are some of the key players:
Rich Baker is a best-selling author and award-winning game designer. He was one of the core designers of 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons, and wrote or contributed to scores of D&D adventures and sourcebooks in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Edition. You may know him from the Birthright Campaign Setting, the Alternity Science Fiction Roleplaying Game, Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords, and the 4th Edition Dark Sun Campaign Setting.
David Noonan counts more than 50 3rd edition, 4th edition, and Pathfinder products among his credits. He was also the lead writer for the TERA MMORPG and consults with video game companies on script and narrative design issues.
Stephen Schubert worked on more than 50 3rd edition and 4th edition Dungeons & Dragons products as a designer/developer, and was a core developer on the D&D Miniatures Game team. He has since branched out into digital games.
Renowned fantasy artist Todd Lockwood, our cover artist, is known for bringing R.A. Salvatore’s Drizzt Do’Urden to life on numerous novel covers, and was the illustrator who reinvented the dragons of D&D for 3rd Edition.
Christopher West is our lead cartographer. His credits include poster maps for the Star Wars Miniatures game, the Maps of Mystery feature in Dungeon magazine, and the Numenera Roleplaying Game.
Our stretch goal designers include some of the best-known writers in the RPG business. The legendary Ed Greenwood is the creator of the Forgotten Realms setting and hundreds of memorable characters, most notably Elminster, the Sage of Shadowdale. Owen Stephens is a fellow Wizards of the Coast veteran and a Pathfinder RPG contributor who worked on the Star Wars Roleplaying Game. Jason Bulmahn is the lead designer for the Pathfinder RPG. You can’t find better writers and designers!
Our production expert is Wizards of the Coast veteran Larry Weiner, who’s forgotten more about the global printing business than most people will ever know. He’s the reason we can deliver a top-notch product like Primeval Thule at an affordable price. Finally, talented newcomers Justin Mayhew and Klaus Pillon are the concept artists who created the images you see on this Kickstarter page, and our logos are the work of graphic artist Mackenzie Schubert of Strip Search fame. Honorary Sasquatches all!
Risks and challenges
This is the debut project for Sasquatch Game Studio LLC, but the three principal Sasquatches have decades of experience in game design, creative direction, production, and marketing. We’ve built worlds before, and we know what it takes. While we have agreements in place with all the freelance game designers and artists mentioned in this Kickstarter, scheduling conflicts may arise. If one of our contributors is unable to participate, we will secure the services of the best available substitute. We are very confident about our ability to deliver the campaign setting book in a timely fashion; however, minor delays in delivery or modest changes in format are possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Why did you Sasquatches make Thule compatible with Pathfinder, 13th Age, or 4th edition D&D? Why those three systems?
Four big reasons: familiarity, book layout, license/permissions, and audience size. Given our time frame and the sinister thaumaturgy we're using at the printing press, we needed to focus on systems where we have lots of experience (broadly speaking, the d20 family tree) and systems that have common elements that take up roughly the same amount of space in the book.
If we picked a system where the system-specific elements (like character options or monsters, for example) took up dramatically more or less space than their d20-compatible counterparts, we'd have issues on the printing press...issues that cost time, money, or both.
But it's not hard to see Primeval Thule for other systems. The three we get asked about are Savage Worlds, FATE, and various flavors of OSR. If the audience is there and licenses/permissions are available, we'd be open to it—as a separate product. We're actively listening on this issue, so if you have a burning desire to explore Primeval Thule with a system we aren't supporting yet, let us know!
13th Age is a brand-new RPG in the same "family tree" as D&D and Pathfinder. We like how it highlights GM/player collaboration, runs fast at the table, and encourages storytelling. If you have questions about the game, this RPGnet thread is the most comprehensive Q&A out there right now: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php…
You can pre-order it from your FLGS or from http://www.pelgranepress.com/shop/.
We think so—given that Primeval Thule needs to match our expectations, too. For us, some things are must-haves: a physical product, full color art that helps us imagine Thule, and enough pages to really explore the continent.
We did a lot of homework on both the cost side of the equation (print quotes, specs for the book, etc.) and our pricing scheme (including what comparable Kickstarter projects offer at various backer levels).
Looking at our eldritch spreadsheets, our biggest line-item is for art. Make no mistake: we're paying for great art. Todd Lockwood, Lee Moyer, Claudio Pozas...these are the artists whose vision we want to tap into for Thule. They're pros, and we're paying 'em like pros. And unlike other RPG products, we don't have preexisting art from other products or previous editions of the rules that we can use again. All art for Thule is original art.
Beyond that, suffice it to say that we have a significant appreciation for the cost of shipping (which is built into our backer levels) and what it takes to print and bind a book on a short press run these days. We've done all we can on those costs, and we're always looking for ways to add value for our backers.
Absolutely! Your campaign can take a turn for the savage just by sending the PCs to Thule (or marooning them there!). Just park the continent of Thule across the sea from wherever your PCs currently are, gods of canon and continuity be damned! We're building Thule to function well as a "second continent" for your campaign...but your players might like Thule so much they never go back.
Right now? Typing up an FAQ, but you knew that already. This July we've been working hard on the character narratives and fleshing out parts of the world where our active playtest tables are working. We've also been working hard with our concept artists to settle on the visuals for some iconic monsters and locations.
And as you might expect, there's a lot of logistics and business involved with launching a game company and managing a Kickstarter campaign—fun in its own way, but I think we Sasquatches will be relieved when the campaign is over and we can delve deeply into every lost valley and hidden temple in Thule.
Can I get a Player's Guide PDF if I back a Digital Thule level (or a higher reward that also gives the PDF of the campaign setting)?
Yes. While the content from the Player's Guide PDF is excerpted from the campaign setting book, anyone who gets a PDF of the Primeval Thule campaign setting book will also receive a PDF copy of the Player's Guide.
