Alternity is back—and it’s better than ever!
Strange new worlds and deadly aliens? Mercenaries for hire? Post-apocalyptic survival? Explore your favorite visions of sci-fi adventure in the new Alternity Science Fiction Roleplaying Game from Sasquatch Game Studio.
Many Worlds, One Game: The Alternity Core Rulebook includes a wealth of campaign-building guidance and a modular rules design so that you can model your favorite SF setting or create your own. We're also launching with one "pre-built" setting, our Protostar universe . . . but we've got plans for more worlds if you want 'em! We plan to unlock at least one more setting through our stretch goals for the project.
What’s your future?
In 1997, Bill Slavicsek and Richard Baker created the original Alternity game—a powerful tabletop RPG engine for science fiction adventure across a wide range of genres. Now, twenty years later, Sasquatch Game Studio is creating a new sci-fi RPG inspired by the original game. We’re rebuilding the game mechanics to take advantage of 20 years of advancement in the art of game design. We’re marrying bold new ideas and exciting new subgenres to the original scope and vision of the Alternity game. And we’re bringing it all together in a convenient, full-color, handsomely illustrated Core Rulebook with supporting adventures and sourcebooks.
But don't wait for the Kickstarter to finish! A Beta Test release of the Alternity game is currently available as a free download on DriveThruRPG! The Beta release includes an overview of the rules, an introductory scenario, and a sample adventure. We'll be collecting feedback from testers and backers throughout the coming weeks to make Alternity awesome!

The Alternity game system features a modular toolkit that you can use to build great characters and adventures in your favorite sci-fi universe—or in a universe of your own creation. It starts with the Alterntiy Core Rulebook, a 1-volume hardbound book that covers character creation, futuristic technology, and adventure design, and includes a selection of dangerous aliens and villainous adversaries, as well as guidelines for building the universe that you want to run.
This 240-page, full-color book is available as a PDF and as a digest-sized hardbound. It includes:
- 5 character archetypes: battler, expert, leader, striker, survivor
- 5 character species: human, cyborg, mutant, and more
- 40+ sci-fi skills and 80+ character talents
- 50+ adversaries and aliens ready for immediate play
- Campaign design, discussing genres and tech levels
- Encounter design and terrain templates
- Exploration and planetography
- Sample setting: The Protostar Universe
- Sample adventure
- And much more!
The Alternity Core Rulebook provides everything you need to begin your own sci-fi adventure… but, if you’re looking for more Alternity resources such as ready-to-play adventures, advanced ship designs, and bug-eyed monsters to challenge your players, check out the sourcebooks we’re working on to expand the core rules! if you pledge at the Gemini level or above, your reward will come with your choice of one or more of these sourcebooks:
Protostar Mission Guide: This campaign overview and adventure anthology introduces you to the universe of the Protostar setting, one exciting episode at a time! It’s 300 years in the future, and warp drive-powered scoutships scour the nearby stars for colonizable planets, valuable resources, and alien technology. Ruthless megacorps and rival nation-blocs compete to find the richest prizes… but humans are about to find out it’s a dangerous galaxy out there. We’ll commission top designers like Robert J Schwalb, Bill Slavicsek, and others to contribute adventures for this riveting vision of humanity’s future.
The Shipyard: Starships are cool! The Shipyard provides you with rules for advanced ship-on-ship combat, an innovative ship design rules set, and new talents and skill uses for characters looking for an edge in space battles. Best of all, we’ll provide dozens of sample starships and deck layouts for use in your Alternity campaigns!
Xenologist’s Guide (Unlocked!): What would sci-fi be without aliens for the heroes to encounter, battle, or bargain with? The Xenologist’s Guide expands the selection of aliens presented in the Core Rulebook, providing the GM with scores of new adversaries, threats, and potential allies for the players to meet, each with its own full-color illustration.
Protostar Deluxe Map Pack: This pack includes a star map of the Protostar universe, as well as reference cards for the GM that provide handy access to charts and tables (need an NPC name on the fly? Trade route reference? Faction basics?), and references for the players that describe what a PC might think and know about the Protostar setting based on that PC's homeworld or occupation. As a printed sourcebook, the map pack includes a poster of the star map and cardstock reference cards.
Guns Guns Gunz! (Locked): The Alternity Arms & Equipment Guide will provide an abundance of new gear and weapons, with sections designed for the tech levels of Protostar and Setting Two, as well as other awesome gear for other eras.
The Alternity Complete PDF Bundle (included in all levels at $45 and above) contains PDFs of all the above sourcebooks, map files for use with the adventures, and additional unlocked stretch goals:
- New PDF adventure in a setting decided by backers!
- Deluxe Character Log PDF
As we press through our stretch goals, we'll add new sourcebooks and make the existing ones even bigger!
We think we’ve got a pretty compelling case for our Core Rulebook and first two supplements, but if this campaign generates strong support, we’ll be able to offer several exciting stretch goal rewards for our contributors.
$40,000: We’ll add a short adventure to the Complete PDF bundle, and we'll let backers vote on the genre/setting for the adventure.
$45,000: We'll add the Xenologist's Guide to Aliens to the Complete PDF package (and make it available in print, if you want it in that format). This sourcebook details dozens of allies and adversaries for you to use in your Alternity adventures.
$50,000: We'll create the Deluxe Character Log - a multi-page editable PDF character sheet to describe all the details of your Alternity hero.
$55,000: When we get this far, we'll create a new set of adventures set in another brand-new setting. We'll get your feedback on the genre - whether it's dark alien conspiracy, post-apocalyptic wastelands, or some other cool universe, and make an episodic adventure anthology based in that setting. Much like the Protostar Mission Guide, this stretch goal will be Season 1 of a brand new story!
$57,993: Set as a special stretch goal to see if we could get 10k in pledges in the final 48 hours of the campaign, this amount unlocks the Protostar Deluxe Map Pack, described in the Sourcebooks section above.
$60,000: Protostar Equipment Supplement. 16- to 20- pages of new gear designed at the tech level of the Protostar universe, provided as its own PDF.
$63,000: Setting 2 Equipment Supplement. Like the previous stretch goal, this PDF includes gear more closely aligned with our Setting Two campaign.
$66,000: Combining both gear supplements with even more content, we'll create the Alternity Arms & Equipment & Gunz! sourcebook (name subject to change). It'll be a stand-alone PDF and also available as a sourcebook.
If we keep climbing, we'll unlock even more stretch goals, including new settings, maps, and sourcebooks!
While we don't have t-shirts or coffee mugs to offer as add-ons, we can accommodate backers that would like to include additional copies of our books with their reward. To include an add-on, increase your pledge by the appropriate amount, and in the post-kickstarter survey we'll verify which additional books you want us to send to you.
- We can send an additional Alternity Core Rulebook for $35 per copy (or $40 per copy for international backers). Your reward tier must already include a core rulebook.
- For backers at the Apollo level ($110) and above, we can send an additional sourcebook of your choice for $20 per copy.
We've been working on Alternity for a while now, and we formally announced our efforts at Gen Con 2016. But we're not creating Alternity in a vacuum. Earlier this year, we released an Alpha test to hundreds of playtesters, and collected feedback on some of our core subsystems. We discussed our playtesting approach in a blog post on our website. Even now, our free download of the Alternity rules is still a Beta test, and we'll continue to get important data on how the game plays through our surveys and responses to these rules. As we move further into the campaign, we'll solicit even more feedback from Alternity backers, which will help shape the Alternity game and product line into something special.
We've done our best to properly estimate shipping charges in the pledge levels. Our final shipping solution will ultimately depend upon the number of shipments we need to make. While domestic shipping is easy and reasonably priced, we understand that international shipping is cumbersome and expensive. We've done our best to account for realistic shipping costs. If we get enough backers, we'll engage a fulfillment company to provide shipments, which could positively impact international shipping costs, or at least customs fees.
One option available to us for our international backers is to use OneBookShelf's Lightning Source printer to print hardcover and softcover books for UK/EU destinations. They have a UK-based printer, so shipments would originate from within the UK and potentially avoid many of the customs fees associated with an international shipment. The book would be nearly identical to our domestically printed books (such books would have no ISBN barcode, and we have to leave the last page blank).

Risks and challenges
Alternity represents a return to our RPG roots; we’re back in our wheelhouse for this project. We are very confident about our ability to deliver the Core Rulebook in a timely fashion; however, minor delays in delivery or modest changes in format are possible. We'll be sure to keep you informed about any delays we run into.
While we're well along in design and development of the core Alternity system, we are waiting to undertake some remaining design work until we see that it is likely that funding will be successful (we still have some aliens and starships to design). We also must wait on funding before we commission art for the books.
We plan to use a domestic (US) printer for the Alternity hardcover book. We've used this printer before for multiple projects, so we expect no issues. Depending on the quantity required, we'll use the same printer for our softcover books or we'll go with OneBookShelf's on-demand printing..
We've successfully run three Kickstarter projects. We successfully launched the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting through Kickstarter, then later added a 5e version of Primeval Thule with a second Kickstarter. We have also just shipped the final component of our Ultimate Scheme board game. We know how to make great games and we're familiar with the Kickstarter process, and we're ready to move ahead with Alternity!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
