 Teaser Trailer

Synopsis

Blurred by decades of public controversy and media hype, an underground music community in Sweden attempts to unravel the legend of local rock band Broder Daniel through first-hand accounts of fans, artists, friends, and the elusive man at the center of the phenomenon, Henrik Berggren. As the community’s own version of events begins to diverge from the public story, the line between fact and legend becomes increasingly unreliable.

Who is Henrik Berggren?

Henrik Berggren is Sweden’s most controversial rockstar. An iconic cultural figure in the vein of Kurt Cobain or Morrissey, Henrik rose to prominence as a teenager in the early 1990’s when, following the commercial success of Nirvana and similar artists overseas, his band, Broder Daniel, was signed to a major label and became Sweden’s first indie-to-mainstream rock act.

Over their almost 20-year career, Broder Daniel’s public image was marred by substance abuse, brushes with the law, and a mutually hostile relationship with the media establishment. In spite of this (or, perhaps, as a result of this), the band found a vast and devoted fanbase in Sweden’s youth counterculture, which developed into a subculture of its own: “pandapoppare.”

Broder Daniel played their farewell show in 2008, five years after the release of their final album and three months after the shocking suicide of the band’s long-time guitarist.

At the time of this production, little had been seen or heard from Henrik, and his whereabouts were unknown.

Project Background

I’ll Be Gone was conceived in 2014. Amelia Trask (director/writer/editor) and Sasha Hecht (producer/writer/editor) had been working in the music industry—Hecht as a writer and co-creator of VICE’s music site, Noisey, and Trask as a music publicist with her own firm —when they were introduced to the story of Broder Daniel by a few of Trask's Swedish clients at the time.

Shocked that they had never heard of the band or Henrik before, Trask and Hecht began to research. Due to their intimate knowledge of the music industry, the two were quickly able to identify flaws in the “official” Broder Daniel narrative, leading them to believe that there was an alternative story, or stories, to what really happened to this important cultural figure.

After connecting with Henrik, who had been living on the outskirts of Gothenburg, Sweden in isolation for nearly eight years, the filmmakers learned that a few years prior, Henrik had been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a little-understood autoimmune disease that has not only detrimental physical effects but also cognitive ones, especially in the area of memory.

Realizing that they would not be able to rely on Henrik’s fragmented accounts of his own story, the filmmakers identified four secondary characters, each with a unique connection to Henrik and stake in the public story of Broder Daniel, who, through their personal testimonies, begin to paint a new version of a well-known Swedish legend.

What Makes I'll Be Gone Unique?

I’ll Be Gone was developed in response to what filmmakers Amelia Trask and Sasha Hecht identified as weaknesses in the current music documentary climate: they are often made by people from film backgrounds, not music backgrounds, and they always seem to fall into one of two camps: “This is the best band you’ve never heard of” or “This is the stuff you don’t know about a band you already love.”

What was missing, Trask and Hecht felt, were intimate portrayals of the actual experience of being an artist, being a part of an art community, or being emotionally invested in an artist.

As music industry professionals, Trask and Hecht have spent years surrounded by musicians and artists, not only in their careers, but also in their close friendships. In lieu of a journalistic presentation of facts and dates, the filmmakers designed I’ll Be Gone from the perspective of the insider, capturing a more personal, visceral, and empathetic impression of what happens to an artist and the community that surrounds them before, during, and after fame.

“I wanted to share the feeling that I get when I watch one of my friends perform a song in front of thousands of people and everyone knows the words, but I know exactly what that song is about and exactly what was going on in her life when she wrote it and what it means for her to be singing it today. Having that context and that understanding completely changes your experience of the art.” - Sasha Hecht, Producer

Risks and challenges

The inherent risk of telling any story that has never been told before is that there is usually a reason why it has never been told. This production encountered such challenges in the form of individuals, entities, and institutions trying to obstruct this project. But now, with the final product in hand and the funds raised through this Kickstarter, nothing stands in the way of this film being completed and released.

Beyond that, the only potential challenge is fulfilling a high volume of physical rewards, but arrangements are being made with a fulfillment service to ensure that rewards will be delivered in a timely manner. Any obstacles or delays will be updated with full transparency.
