ABOUT THE PROJECT

Hi, my name is Sasha Ariel and I am the teen author of the children’s book Sasha Tech Savvy Loves to Code. Although I'm from Washington, DC, l currently attend the Lubin School of Business at Pace University in New York, where my major is Information Systems. I’ve written this book to encourage and empower girls, especially girls of color (ages 7-10), to learn how to code. Coding is computer programming. I also want to get girls interested in opportunities in STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. From my own experience, I’ve noticed that there just aren’t enough girls involved in STEM-related activities. Less than 1% of high school girls are even interested in pursuing a computer science degree. Only 11% of women of color are in STEM career fields. Raising interest and changing these statistics starts with exposing girls to STEM at an early age.

ALL ABOUT THE BOOK

Sasha Tech Savvy is a super smart,10-year old African-American girl, who lives in Washington, DC with her dad Steve Savvy- a chef, her mom Stacy Savvy- a computer software developer, and her older brother, Savion Savvy.

Her best friends are Gabby Reyes and Ashley Webster. Sasha and her friends attend coding camp just like I did. Sasha gets frustrated when her code doesn’t work just like I did and still do. This book is based on a lot of things I've experienced but through the eyes of a 10-year old.

Sasha Tech Savvy Loves to Code highlights:

  • Some basic coding terms
  • Problem-solving
  • Benefits of trying something new
  • Importance of seeking help when needed
  • Overcoming challenges and
  • Women and Girl role models in STEM

This story is my way of getting girls excited about STEM. I want them to be confident that they can choose any career they want. All they need are the skills, enthusiasm, and support from parents, educators, the community, and companies who require a tech savvy workforce. We can all play a huge part. I am even more inspired after seeing the amazing movie Hidden Figures. Let's make sure girls in STEM will not be hidden figures!

PURPOSE OF THE KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN

I'm doing this Kickstarter campaign to get some help completing the rest of the book project. I'm happy to say that I've finished writing the book. I started writing the book when I was a senior at McKinley Technology High School in Washington, DC and it took 2 years to complete. It is 32 pages so far and I plan to have both a print and a downloadable e-book version.  As you can see, the front cover is complete. YAY! Seeing the final cover for the first time was exciting. The book cover was illustrated by the fabulous and talented Vanessa Brantley Newton. She also created two awesome illustrations for the interior to help bring Sasha Tech Savvy’s family and friends to life.

WHAT'S NEXT

I need to have the back cover designed, take a cover photo, layout the interior, add more illustrations, get it ready for printing in two formats, pay the Kickstarter fees, and ship the book and rewards to backers. My experienced and talented Girl Power team has been assembled and we are ready. All I need now is your support to cover the final production, printing and distribution costs. Your generous donations are so appreciated and please don't forget to spread the word. Thanks in advance! This will be a dream come true!

MORE ABOUT ME

I was a Finalist in the Youth Essay Category of the Larry Neal Writers’ Award presented by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and also published in the Harvard Educational Review - Youth Voices.

I created my first app at a coding camp at UCLA.

I’ve had 6 amazing internships that merged my three academic pursuits of technology, business, and education:

* Microsoft Corporation, Athletech Division * EverFi * U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, Office of the Chief Information Officer * U.S. Department of Commerce, Intern to Bruce Andrews, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce * National Academy Foundation * Many Mentors *

I've been a speaker at several events to discuss my intern experiences and to encourage youth, especially girls of color, to pursue STEM educational and career opportunities.

Besides coding, reading, writing and travel, I love the fashion industry and will pursue modeling while in New York.

I am focused and determined.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Risks and challenges

All projects have some level of risks and challenges but I have taken the steps to reduce them and to increase my success. I have assembled a team of reputable, talented, and experienced professionals to produce and print the book. I do not expect delays but sometimes things happen. I will provide updates on my progress. My MOManager, Tracy Chiles McGhee, an author, lawyer, and program manager will help me stay on track with the plan and deliver a quality book.
