Ardent Seas is a Naval Real Time Strategy game for Windows and Linux, featuring three unique factions, local and online multiplayer, and a single player campaign The stars of the show are the Flagships, enormous floating military bases that are both the core of any fleet, and the primary objective.

Ships fight with a variety of weapons, ranging from small autocannons to giant railguns, and from rockets to cruise missiles, and also defend themselves with point defense guns, flares and smoke screens.

But beware, a larger weapon does not always mean more damage. If a weapon has far more armor piercing potential than the target has armor, it might just fly clean through, causing very little damage. Conversely, unless the armor of a ship has already been heavily damaged, light weapons are just going to bounce off.

The game is set in the far, yet seemingly near, future, in a solar system only identified as Kepler. Thousands of years ago, Humans took to the stars, in search of new worlds. One such world is Tenorra, a water planet slightly bigger than Earth.

The people of this world were in the process of recovering from a dark age, brought about by the less-than-optimal colonization of the planet, and have recently settled another, similar, planet in the system: Pyrios.

Tenorra has two dominant powers, the Tenorran Defense Union, and the Coalition of Populist Socialist Nations, and respectively, the Tenorran Defense Navy and the Coalition Navy as playable factions.

Now they face a new threat: The Ravagers, a machine race, built by an unknown alien race for the sole purpose of destroying all foreign technology.

The Tenorran Defense Navy, TDN, is a good all-rounder, with fairly mobile ships, a powerful air force, and a love for long range missiles. Clever use of Electronic Warfare, like ECM jamming fields that cause missiles to fly off course, EMP cannons that can 'freeze' ships, and many others, makes them more than capable of dealing with any kind of threat they may face, even against superior numbers.

For a more direct approach, the Coalition Navy, CN for short, is a slow moving powerhouse of a navy, using heavily armored ships bristling with guns to overwhelm their enemies with numbers and raw firepower. While their air force is no match for that of the TDN, the Coalition has a much wider range of submarines, ranging from good old fast attack submarines, to enormous submersible aircraft carriers and ballistic missile submarines.

And last but not least, the Ravagers. Hit and run is the name of the game, with their very fast ships, the Ravagers can easily get in close enough to tear any enemies apart. Did we mention that they build units by dropping them from space onto the battlefield?

Units can be customized, with camouflage patterns with adjustable colors, unit skins, and in some cases, even alternate ship models.

This part of the customization is purely cosmetic, however, units can also be customized in terms of weaponry to an extent. In general, Weapons can either be upgraded in damage output, or in firing range, but some are changed completely.

Ardent Seas comes with a 12-Mission campaign split into 3+1 chapters. The campaign follows the war with the Ravagers from the beginning to the end, and takes place on the planets of Pyrios and Tenorra.

Also part of the campaign, is a 'suggestive' Tutorial, which, rather than interrupting the gameplay, points towards the various game mechanics without forcing you to do any special tasks.

Helge Pharrherr: Founding member, game designer, artist, level designer, PR guy, professional pizza devourer. Has been active in the Command and Conquer modding community since 2005, working on both big and small mods.

Koen Mulder: Founding member, software engineer, has a Bachelor in Applied Computer Science. Used to program maintenance tools for Radars, and gets very upset when radars don't look the way they should. Might also be a paranoid FBI Agent.

James News: Founding member, game designer and artist, former military. James is our walking library on naval warfare, and military history in general.

Rasoul M.P. Aghdam: Composer and SFX Artist, Rasoul is in charge of our soundtrack.

So, why do we want to do this? The reason is simple: RTS games have become increasingly rare in recent years, with very few major titles.

While many games include Ships, Classical RTS games focused primarily on naval combat are very rare. We want to change that, but to do that, we need your help! We want to make Ardent Seas the best game it could possibly be.

All proceeds from this campaign, minus kickstarter's fees, etc., will be used for the development of the game, both directly, by hiring more talent, and indirectly, for marketing, and minor hardware upgrades.

If you can't pledge, you can still help us, by spreading the word far and wide, on twitter, facebook, and any other platform you can think of!

If we exceed our original funding goal, we can make this game even greater, by adding more features, and more content in general. We are going to reveal additional stretch goals as the campaign progresses.

Risks and challenges

Ardent Seas isn't a small game by any means, as such, it's certainly a big undertaking. But we've come a long way on a two-man team over the past year and a half, and once the campaign is funded, the team will grow considerably. In fact, we already have several people ready to go, including several artists, voice actors, and a very talented composer.

Even though we are relatively new to game development, we have years of game design, art, and animation, and also programming experience from our years of modding games such as Command and Conquer, and by now also a few years of experience with Unity.

A natural part of game development is that some mechanics and features might not work out the way they were originally planned, or aren't as fun as they seemed to be on paper, and unexpected delays are always possible. For this reason, we're running closed a alpha and beta, and have planned in some extra time.
