[[ UPDATE 7.28 : NEW PREMIUM $150 your own cover song! Thanks to so many wonderful generous pledgers we will be funded! I have, however, created a "stretch goal" of $14K, a) to try to recoup the Kickstarter fees, and b) to cover all production costs. IF I REACH THE STRETCH GOAL, EVERYONE WHO PLEDGED $50 or more WILL GET A FLASHLIGHT TAG CD (that I sing on) and that is really cool! SEE UPDATE #6 for details! Love Sarah ]]
The day is here. You've been asking (and asking and asking...) and I've been talking and talking... for years it seems! But the time is now. I am ready to make a record.
The goal is to make my best record ever. To reach this goal I plan to take the best of my songs - old, new, borrowed, blue - and create the most fully-realized, complete work of art that I’ve ever made, a full-length album delivered without compromise. I also want this record to reach a much wider audience than ever before. But first I need to get it recorded.
And so I need your help. Friends, family, fans, connections old and new, everyone I ever touched with a song, or a show, or even a bare hand. I want to make this record and deliver it to YOU in time for Christmas.
If you are new to my music, here are a few examples from my catalog, just to whet your appetite for the new Sarah White recording.
- California From White Light CD. A song about a car and the boy who drove away in that car. Boy did I love that car.... Pedal Steel played by Charlie Bell (who will play on the new album), with Steve Ingham (T-Shirt artist) on drums and Jeffrey Grosfeld on bass.
- Last Day Of May From Beeline Single. Students at Light House Studio made an award winning video using this track. Cameo by yours truly, with Michael Bishop (GWAR, Kepone) on bass, Charlie Bell (x-Hackensaw Boys) on guitar and Trivett Wingo (x-The Sword) on drums.
- Sweetheart. From Sweetheart EP. I made the EP with prize money from the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, where it won Best Song in 2007. Ted Pitney (formerly of King Wilkie) plays guitar and sings on this EP. Can you hear this sung as a duet? I've been thinking about that....
I'm trying something new this time. I'm not going into the studio with a band; I'm going in with a producer and a pile of songs. Virginia-based producer Stewart Meyers and I have compiled a list of songs and are ready to pull some stellar musicians into the studio and get tracking.
I’ve never approached a recording in this way. The best thing about this process so far, and why it’s so fundamental to have a producer on board, is that he brings new ears to the process. He hears things that I don’t, and has ideas I might never have thought of. It makes it fun. I believe this process will deliver my songs in a new and compelling way.
Here’s a very optimistic budget for this recording project:
- Production $8600 (studio, musicians, engineer)
- Post production $6100 (mixing, mastering, manufacturing etc)
- Kickstarter Fees (between 5-10% for processing)
It's very difficult to decide what my budget goal HERE should be. With Kickstarter it's feast or famine (meaning, if you don't get your goal, you get squat) so one needs to choose carefully. I've sought advice, and more advice; some say aim high, some say aim low. I'm not sure why but I feel like $12000 is a manageable goal. I believe that with enough small and a few large donations this can be achieved. I know it's a lot to ask. But every ocean begins with just a few drops of water. The sea is deep, and I have to trust that it will support me. (Although the amount of shark attacks thus far this year IS alarming... .)
So! PLEASE check out the premiums on the right side of the page. Besides the new record, I've got house concerts, T-Shirts, posters, tickets, cupcakes, and the like. I will be adding more premiums, some art from band members, more CDs and the Married Life 7" as well for you vinyl junkies. I hope that my Christmas shopping is this much fun!
MY PROMISE TO YOU
Every cent donated is vital to the project, and not one penny will be wasted. If you have any questions about any of the premiums -- hell, if you’d like to swap the french fries for a green salad -- by all means, drop me a line and let’s see what I can do.
And with that I bid you adieu. There is so much to do, and little time to waste. Recording begins in August, and Christmas is just months away. So please join me on this adventure. Hop in and let’s see how far this thing will ride. I truly can't thank you enough.
P.S. Remember this gem from the Sweetheart CD? Affectionately called "Apple", this song is about putting your heart on your sleeve and letting your light shine. Well that's what THIS project is all about. Let it shine, baby.
P.P.S. I Love You. Don't ever forget.
Risks and challenges
I am VERY confident that we will knock out the basic tracking on schedule, especially since those studio days and musicians are committed. Soon after that we work on vocals and overdubs; this can take some time, but I've actually over budgeted for this part. Mastering and pressing the record is the last step, and if these go over I'll certainly let you know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
