By commissioning art from a diverse set of artists and releasing to the Creative Commons, we'll change how fantasy heroes are depicted.

Prismatic Art Collection is a free library of art representing heroes of all backgrounds. In geek culture, there are plenty of Lukes, but not enough Landos or Leias. We want to change that. We're raising funds to hire a diverse group of artists to create fantasy art depicting heroes of all backgrounds.

Our initial goal is $5,000, enough for at least 20 pieces of art centering on humans in 4 of the classic fantasy role-playing game archetypes. As we surpass those initial goals, we'll explore the world outside our comfortable tavern and unlock additional fantasy races and classes.

Here are some sample pieces from some of the artists who contacted us:

What are our Goals?

Chapter 1: Forming the Party $5,000

  • We will commission or license at least 20 pieces of art
  • Base Race: Humans
  • Base Classes: Fighters, Clerics, Wizards, and Rogues

Chapter 2: Delve into the Mountain Mines $7,500+

  • We will commission or license at least 10 more pieces of art (total of at least 30)
  • Unlocked Race: Dwarves
  • Unlocked Classes: Alchemists, Paladins

Chapter 3: Flight through the Enchanted Forest $10,000+

  • We will commission or license at least 10 more pieces of art (total of at least 40)
  • Unlocked Race: Elves
  • Unlocked Classes: Ranger, Druid

What's in it for Backers?

The art will be Creative-Commons Attribution Share-Alike licensed (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/), so you can download and use the art for your own role-playing games, board games, novels, you name it. Even a small pledge helps expand the library for everyone. For now, higher pledge levels will gain access to the art a bit earlier and, in the future, work more closely with an artist.

What's in it for Artists?

We're looking for partnerships with professional artists and we're dedicated to attracting a diverse group of artists including women and people of color. Please contact us at prismatic_art@sarahdarkmagic.com if you'd like to join us. If you provide original art, you'll be paid a fair rate for your work. If you have existing work that you think will qualify, let us know!

Who are you anyway?

  • Tracy Hurley is a blogger, podcaster, and freelance writer. Her site, SarahDarkmagic.com, was nominated for a 2011 ENnie for best blog and she has written for a number of companies including Wizards of the Coast, Paizo, Kobold Quarterly/Open Design, Margaret Weis Productions, Smart Play Games, and Evil Hat Productions.
  • Daniel Solis is co-founder of Smart Play Games. By day, he is associate creative director at an advertising agency. By night, Daniel is a game designer always in search of cool representational art for his products. You can find more of his stuff at danielsolis.com

Together, we want to make it easier for underrepresented artists to find work, easier for everyone to find more varied depictions of heroes.

Who are some of the artists who have agreed to work with you?

...and more. Currently, we have about 30 confirmed artists overall and we're reaching out to many more. We've created an album on Google+ with their bios and we'll continue to add to it as more sign up.

FAQ

  • From http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/legalcode

"This Section 4(a) applies to the Work as incorporated in a Collection, but this does not require the Collection apart from the Work itself to be made subject to the terms of this License."

If you want to include an image from our project in your work, feel free. You'll need to label or credit the image somewhere, for example: "ART by ARTIST (URL) is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License <http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/>."; If you make changes to the original image, those changes will be available to others under the same license. The rest of it is yours. Our hope is that this balances the needs of the publishers with those of the artists and everyone can come out a winner.

  • Many of our artists are professionals. I want to harness their knowledge and creative energy as much as possible. Also, I don't want to force them to create something that doesn't necessarily appeal to them. However, I also know that you all want to provide input into the design process. While I hope to offer some rewards that give people even more control over what gets produced, for the general artwork pool I want to give the backers a chance to add to a wishlist that will be provided to the artists. Hopefully this will not only provide a creativity springboard for the artists, but I'm hoping to publish the wish list for future projects and artists looking for something to create.

  • We're big fans of all genres, but fantasy is one of the biggest, most popular genres of geek culture so we're starting there. If this project succeeds, we'll expand to more genres like space opera, steampunk, cyberpunk, and so on.

  • We'll give more details in the future, but here are the basics. All submissions must be high-resolution in either black and white or color. All submissions must depict women, people of color, or differently abled people in fantasy heroic roles. No cheesecake, ethnic sidekicks, or caricatures, please. Just straight-up fantasy heroes. We're open to all styles of art, but we want professional-grade quality stuff. Please contact us athttp://mailto:prismatic_art@sarahdarkmagic.com for details on how to partner with us and what we can offer as compensation. In all cases, accepted submissions will be released to the Creative Commons under an Attribution Share-Alike license.

  • You know, swords, dragons, dungeons, wizards, that kind of thing. Use your imagination, but definitely keep within that spectrum.

  • We are paying the artists between $50 - $300 for most of the art. Special commissions will probably cost a bit more. Since we don't know the exact art we're commissioning yet (both the backers and the artists will have some input in that), we can't give an exact number on how many pieces we'll have. If we decided to do a lot of small, black & white line art, we'll end up with a lot more art. If we go for more set pieces that are larger and with multiple characters, we'll end up with fewer overall pieces. We're also giving artists the chance to license to us existing art they own at a slightly reduced rate. Thus, we felt comfortable guaranteeing at least 20 for the base goal and 10 for each additional level.
