The Sapling Aluminum Series wallet is designed with the minimalist in mind. The slim design of the wallets allow you to carry it in your front pocket which makes your wallet more comfortable and secure. The wallet features a unibody design machined from a solid block of 6061 aluminum which is an RFID blocking material. This means that your cards are more secure against card skimming, an increasingly more common method of card theft. I chose to make the wallet a one-piece design, because I wanted to create something that would last. The wallets are anodized to add a look that will hold up over time and will also allow us to add a custom name engraving with a laser engraver. The design includes an elastic band which allows the wallet to expand to meet your needs, holding 1-8 cards. The height of the card slot is the equivalent to the width of 5 cards but because of the elastic band design, the wallet is capable of holding more and is still fully functional if you decide to add more cards. I would recommend holding no more than 8 cards, as the elastic band will expand and stretch out if too many cards are in the wallet over an extended period of time. The elastic band also stretches lengthwise across the back of the wallet allowing you to store cash or cards on the inside or outside of the wallet, much like a money clip would. The slotted design allows for fast and easy access to all of your cards. The elastic band is also conveniently placed so that the numbers on your card are concealed from view when the wallet is being removed from your pocket.
The Sapling Aluminum Series wallets are cut from a solid block of 6061 aluminum. After it has been machined it is then glass bead blasted to give the material of the wallet a consistent finish. The finish is similar to what you would see on a MacBook Pro. After they have bead blasted they are then sent out to be anodized, which will both color and seal the bare aluminum. This helps to protect the wallet from the elements as well as give it a really nice look. After the process of anodizing, wallets may be engraved either with the laser engraver or the CNC machine itself depending on which version you choose. After the wallet has been through the engraving process, we then put the elastic band on the wallet. The elastic bands are quad-stitched to ensure that they will hold up over time. Finally, the wallets are packaged in a bubble wrap mailer so that they will arrive safely to your doorstep.
Step 1 : Pick your face type.
Classic Aluminum Series
Inspired from the design of the first Sapling wallet, the Classic Aluminum Series features the Sapling logo on the bottom half of the wallet. Custom name engraving is an option and will be located on the top half of the wallet.
Crosshatch Aluminum Series
Simple yet elegant, the Crosshatch features a texture spanning nearly the entire front of the wallet. With no custom engraving space available, the crosshatch highlights the beauty of being simple by having our logo concealed on the inside of the wallet only.
Stealth Aluminum Series
The Stealth Aluminum series wallet highlights the customizability aspect of this project.Instead of just adding a custom engraving anywhere, I decided to design a wallet solely around the idea of being custom.Featuring a knurled pocket pattern on the face, the Stealth will be available in both solid and two-tone color selections. Name engraving is automatically included for each and every Stealth Aluminum Wallet.
Step 2 : Pick your color.
The wallet will be available in gold, black, and silver for the duration of the kickstarter campaign. If you've selected the stealth face you also have the option of getting your wallet in a two-toned color scheme.(black/silver gold/silver) A bulk order secures that we can meet minimums on these colors. Certain colors may not be available after the kickstarter so it's important to secure the one you want during the campaign!
Step 3: Name Engraving.
Upon the completion of the project, anyone who has backed the project will be given a survey asking for any information we need to complete your reward including what name you would like to be engraved. Your name will be engraved via laser.
Once the project has been funded and the kickstarter payment processing has been taken care of we will proceed by ordering the material necessary to produce the wallets. Generally metal delivery takes 1-2 business days. Once the aluminum has arrived we will begin production immediately. One of the perks of machining the wallets ourselves is that we won't have to juggle other jobs in the shop while trying to get the wallets produced. This will make for a much smoother production process. Anodizing the wallets has a 5 day turnaround but may increase a few days depending on how many wallets actually need to be colored. During a small production run of 75 wallets I was able to make adjustments necessary to make sure that the production of the wallets goes smoothly. Having our own laser engravers helps a lot too in making sure that we will have a seamless production line. Depending on how many wallets are ordered we may even bring multiple batches of wallets to anodize in order to keep every process running so we can get your wallet to you as fast as we can.
All aspects of the creation of Sapling wallets are produced and manufactured in the USA. By supporting this project you are creating jobs that are on U.S. soil.
Risks and challenges
The best part about being a machinist and creating the products myself is that I have quality control over everything. I'll be able to analyze the production process and make any necessary adjustments to stay on course. Part tolerances will be checked throughout the manufacturing process to make sure that each and every wallet is created the way I intended for them to be as a finished part. We have developed a relationship with the company that anodizes our wallets for us.They have been doing business with the US military and aerospace industries since 1965.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
