The Basics:  No Aquarium?  Time To Get One

Almost everyone loves fish. But nobody likes the work involved or the problems that come with "dirty" aquariums. Well that was before the HOG Scrubber. The HOG Scrubber cleans the aquarium water, and can also feed your fish; this means healthy fish, no algae problems, and no changing water every week! Fish of course are not included; you'll need to head down to your local fish store and get your new aquarium, fish, gravel, decorations, light, air pump and timer AFTER you get your HOG scrubber. If you've heard enough, then there''s no need to read further; just choose "Pledge $195 or more; HOG1 Black" from the right side of the page. All HOG Scrubbers work on 120 or 240 volts (in any country), and will only need a two-prong plug adapter if you don't use U.S. style plugs. And complete instructions are included, as well as email help and a discussion forum.

Now more info: Similar to how aquaponics grows plants in order to clean aquariums, the HOG Scrubber (tm) grows algae PURPOSELY in the filter to do the same, but does so in saltwater and REEF tanks!

.

Basic concept of natural filtration
Basic concept of natural filtration

.

Regular aquarium filters can't do this! Regular filters just trap particles in a screen, but do nothing to remove the "bad" chemicals out of the water. Result: Regular filters still allow nuisance algae to grow in the aquarium, and still require you to change the water each week in order to remove those chemicals.

So how does a HOG Scrubber work? The same way that oceans and lakes work: Photosynthesis. That's right, almost 100% of the filtering of all the lakes and oceans in the world comes from photosynthesis from growing algae, mostly from the free-floating microalgal "phyto" particles, but also from the attached macroalgal seaweed when the depth is less than 100 feet. And guess what: All aquariums are less than 100 feet deep, so the HOG Scrubber allows the attached macroalgal seaweed to grow in the filter instead of your aquarium! (It does NOT just "filter" algae out of the water like a sponge does; this would just cause the algae to rot in the sponge!) Here is one of my aquariums that ran for 4 years only by growing algae in the filter...

Here's the Kickstarter version of the HOG Scrubber filter; red LEDs in the outside-half of the filter shine through the aquarium glass and cause algae to grow on the white section of the inside-half of the filter, and this growth is what does your filtering! The black plastic case was chosen because it is a proven color and because it blocks more of the red light (of the LEDs) from going through the case...

Cleaning the HOG Scrubber simply requires you to take the inside-half to your sink to brush off the algae that grew inside it.

Here are some designer color versions for possible stretch goals; a "stretch goal" is a special part of a Kickstarter campaign that sometimes (not always) happens near the end, in order to push the total number of pre-orders (pledges) up to a new, higher quantity...

You should start out, however, by ordering a black one; then if the stretch goal colors become available later, you can change your selection if you like the new color.

HOG stands for Hang-On-Glass (tm), because the HOG Scrubber attaches to your aquarium glass (or sump glass) with magnets. And it's called a "scrubber" because it "scrubs" (removes) the "bad" chemicals out of the water. As a matter of fact it's this removal of bad chemicals from the water that makes the aquarium almost self-sustaining, and it's this need for filtration that our www.Santa-Monica.cc site has been focused on up until now with hand-made HOG Scrubber filters. Now it's time for you and Kickstarter to come together with pre-orders (pledges) to help us make manufactured-looking filters that you'll be proud to put on your aquarium! Here are the items ("rewards") you can pre-order by making a pledge on the right side of the page...

.

What rewards you can get

.

Ready to pledge (pre-order) ?

Just choose how much you feed (or will feed) your aquarium from the pledge options on the right (there are also picture descriptions below) and start googlng to find your nearest fish store to pick out your favorite fish! (The HOG Scrubber works in both fresh and salt water). Not sure which HOG to get? The safe bet is the middle-sized HOG1 BLACK for $195 (all you'll need from your fish store is an air pump and a timer). If enough pre-orders come in by October 28, you'll get your HOG Scrubber after that! If enough pre-orders do not come in, don't worry because you'll never be charged. All HOG Scrubbers work on 120 or 240 volts (in any country), and will only need a two-prong plug adapter if you don't use U.S. style plugs.

Extra units: Undoubtedly some folks will have multiple aquariums (or larger aquariums) that they'll want to get multiple HOG Scrubbers for. Since Kickstarter only allows one HOG Scrubber per username, you'll need to get another username for each HOG Scrubber; each HOG will then be shipped separately to you. You can also create usernames for relatives and friends to get HOG Scrubbers for too.

Sustainability

Now, if you are asking how "self sustaining" your aquarium might be if you use a HOG Scrubber, well this depends on the type of fish and aquarium that you purchase from your local fish store. With a HOG Scrubber, you can actually reduce your maintenance down to just three things: feeding, adding water that has evaporated, and cleaning the HOG Scrubber itself. That's right: No water changes, and no removing nuisance algae from the aquarium! And if you get an "enclosed" aquarium (one with a special almost-sealed top) from your local fish store, you can even eliminate most of the evaporation. This leaves you with an (almost) self-sustaining aquarium that only requires feeding, and HOG Scrubber cleaning.

Well now, how about feeding? Guess what again: Certain fish and snails can live on algae, and some live ONLY on algae. Since the HOG Scrubber will grow a thin layer of algae on the aquarium glass inside the filter (in addition to growing algae in the removable part of the filter too), all you have to do is slide the unit sideways along the glass every few days to give the fish and snails freshly grown algae right there in the tank! You'll still need to take your HOG Scrubber to the sink every week or two for cleaning, however.

What's involved in cleaning the HOG? A toothbrush! That's right, just disconnect the air tubing and take the inside-half of the HOG to the sink, and use a toothbrush to brush the algae off of the attachment surfaces while holding it under the running water.

But if you really want to maximize the self-sustainability of your aquarium, you can try to balance the eating requirements of your fish with the growth inside your HOG Scrubber, by opening your HOG Scrubber inside the aquarium so all the fish and snails can eat from inside it. Some fish just go absolutely crazy for the fresh live algae, because this is what they eat in the wild.  :)

It may take some experimenting, but with the right aquarium and fish/snail, it is indeed possible to have an aquarium where you practically do nothing. So if you are ready to try a HOG Scrubber, just pick a pre-order (pledge) option to the right (also pictured below) based on how much you'll be feeding your aquarium each day. If you don't know how much you'll be feeding each day, just ask your local fish store how many frozen cubes, or square inches of nori seaweed, or pinches of flake food, or grams of pellet food you'll be needing to feed the fish you want (and if you still can't get an answer, the safe bet is the HOG1 BLACK for $195). Don't be surprised if the store has never heard of a filter that is based on how much you feed, because scrubbers are the first to do this. For that matter, don't be surprised if the store has not heard of anything at all that you are reading here; if that's the case then send them to this Kickstarter  :)

I want a Nemo tank!

Now, I do realize that many people just want to "get a nice clownfish tank like our Kickstarter picture", or "start with some easy goldfish", and for these people the usefulness of the HOG Scrubber is not really about maximizing self-sustainability as it is about keeping your beautiful fish alive with little effort! Well fear not: The favorite food of algae is ammonia (if you've ever lost fish in the past, it was probably from ammonia). That's right: Algae love to absorb ammonia! So by using a HOG Scrubber, the built-in ammonia-consuming algae that grow inside the HOG will grow even more if ammonia is in the water, thus absorbing the ammonia and saving your fish!

Only two extra things are needed for your HOG Scrubber to work: A timer, and an air pump. The timer (not included with any option here) can be any household timer designed to turn lamps on and off; set it so that the LED light in the HOG Scrubber stays on 12 to 22 hours per day. The air pump, however, must stay on 24 hours; the HOG.5 can use a small regular aquarium air pump, but the HOG1 and HOG1x need a larger air pump, preferably one with two air outlets combined into one. A great pump for all the HOGs is the Fusion 700 from JW Pet, but it may not be available in other countries; that's why we've included it as an option with the pre-orders (pledges). More info is available in these HOG instructions (click on the picture)...

What About Corals?

Corals, and reef aquariums, are where algae scrubbers really do their best. This is because corals live by eating particles in the water; particles such as copepods, amphipods, phytoplankton, detritus (waste), larvae, microbes and bacteria. So the more of these particles that are in the water, the more the corals can eat like they do on real reefs. However most other aquarium filters remove these particles, thus depriving the corals of food. Further, most other aquarium filters don't remove what does need to be removed: Nitrate and Phosphate.

Algae scrubbers do exactly what is needed: They remove Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Ammonia, Ammonium, CO2, metals (including copper), CO2, and some poisions, and they put into the water oxygen, amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins (including vitamin C), and even baby pods. Even the pH is raised.

Having extra food and waste particles in the water, and having less nutrients, is especially beneficial for SPS corals which consume very large amounts of these particles. This is exactly how a real reef works: Large amounts of particles, and low amounts of nutrients.

Where did all this come from?

Now some history: HOG Scrubbers are one version of an "algae scrubber"; algae scrubbers were invented about 30 years ago by Dr. Walter Adey when he was working at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. The early versions he built were large and unreliable due to their moving mechanical construction. But basically they dumped water onto a screen, and they had lights on top shining down onto the screen where the algae would grow. The system he built at the Smithsonian ran for 8 years completely sealed, with no connection to the "outside" world.

.

Dr. Adey also patented that early design as the first water filter to use a dumping bucket to grow algae on purpose, whereby the algae could be removed ("harvested")...

.

.

The brilliant thing about his idea was that it separated the algal-growth part of a reef from the animal-growth part. In other words, the reefs, oceans and lakes naturally use algal growth for their filtration, but the algae and the animals are normally woven together in one volume of water.  Dr. Adey physically separated the algal part from the animal part, such that the algae could be harvested (removed) easily.

.

.

From that time in 1982 up until 2008, many aquarium owners wanted to try algae scrubbers but Dr. Adey did not ever sell them for aquariums. He also limited who else could sell them because of his U.S. patent on the dumping-bucket design. And it was not yet understood that reef aquariums needed to have calcium and alkalinity replenished; this meant fewer public aquariums used scrubbers than would probably have been the case otherwise. So, few dumping buckets were sold, and if you did buy one or manage to build one yourself, you had a somewhat noisy, splashy, large, expensive and often unreliable contraption on top of your aquarium.

Well in the summer of 2008 I was looking into natural filtration systems for aquariums, and after considering building one of the dump bucket versions I decided there had to be an easier way of just moving water across a screen. So I decided to let gravity do the work and just pumped water to the top of a vertical screen where the water would then drain down like a waterfall. I put it into a bucket, and got this:

.

.

It worked great! After using this waterfall scrubber as the only filter on my reef aquarium, and with no water changes, the nutrients (nitrate, phosphate) were reduced to zero as measured by aquarium test kits, and the nice pink coralline started growing on the rocks for the first time! I then started building the waterfall scrubbers out of acrylic and selling them. They were expensive, huge, bulky, fragile, heavy, noisy, hard to clean, hard to ship, and had to be placed above the water surface so the waterfall could drain back down to the water...

.

However these scrubbers still worked great for several years. No more water changes, and no more expensive equipment. But man were they ugly, and you had to take them apart to clean them; so you had to plan ahead for cleaning.

Bubbles! Bubbles! Bubbles!

Well one day gave rise to doing the exact opposite of a waterfall: an UPFLOW scrubber, that uses AIR BUBBLES instead of a water pump! The main reason for this is because an Upflow Algae Scrubber ® (also called a UAS®) does not require a water pump, and therefore does not need to be placed above the aquarium. Instead it goes INSIDE the aquarium (or sump) which makes installation MUCH MUCH simpler! Not to mention, it gives fresh algae to the fish and snails. Here's how the HOG Scrubber started...

.

It needed to have cheap materials that anyone could find; this would allow other people to build them at home. The design I came up with was a small disposable plastic "oven proof" TV-dinner tray; we addede magnets, a rough surface for algae attachment, air tubing, LEDs, and electrical parts (all by hand) here in our office in Santa Monica, California. The main comment we always get is "it looks very DIY". Well, it is! It takes 3.5 hours to build just one HOG Scrubber; here's how the current hand-made version looks...

.

Current version of the hand-built HOG.5 -- "Very DIY!"

.

Several hundred of these HOG Scrubbers have been selling on our www.Santa-Monica.cc site over the past year.  But the next logical step was to look at getting the HOGs molded so they'd have a more "manufactured" look. Thermo-forming was out, because of the intricate sections that were needed for the magnets, bubbles, tubing, and water flow.

How To Build These Darn Things?

Then we tried looking into injection molding. Most people on Kickstarter know about the $15,000 to $30,000 price for just making the injection mold for one part (and the HOG Scrubber has 2 parts), but that of course is what Kickstarter is for. However after submitting the 3D model to ten different injection companies, not one was able to help. They recommended heavily modifying the design to allow the injection tools to work, or to break the part into three separate pieces.

So I started looking into 3D printing. The first inquiry was to have a printing service handle all the printing. While the sample prints (at up to $250 each; $500 for the two parts) were great, the cost for multiple prints was basically the same as the samples (no discount), because with 3D printing, the machines can't go any faster.

So then I looked into buying a 3D printer; the question became what type of printer, how large, and what the per-part cost would be. Well I first stumbled upon the Form 1 SLA printer here on Kickstarter, but photo-cured prints will continue curing in the strong lights of an aquarium, and thus would get brittle (this also ruled out the PolyJet and ObJet). Plus, the resins would be hard to work with in an office with carpet and clerical workers. Then I wondered about SLS machines (which one of my samples were printed with), but the powder used would also be hard to deal with in an office, plus, the parts were more brittle and porous. Then I discovered Fused Filament printers which use melted plastic filament in order to make the part; many FF printers use PLA plastic (as do most printers on Kickstarter), but this type of plastic will slowly dissolve when under water. (!)

Finally I found FF printers capable of printing with ABS, which is the same plastic used in Lego® building blocks for kids. The sample HOG Scrubbers that were made from ABS were strong like injection molding, and would not continue to cure, and would not dissolve when under water! The samples had futuristic-looking lines in them which still had a gloss; these smooth lines are the result of the melted plastic filaments of the printer and actually looked really good in this design (sort of a black carbon fiber appearance). The first FF sample I got was from a home-printer using a MakerBot® Replicator 2x (tm). It was almost perfect; it just needed to be printed without the "raft"...

.

Early version of a HOG case 3D printed by a home user; the "raft" on the left made it an easy decision to not use rafts again. Also note the ridges in the 3D printed air tube at the top-right; these are being replaced with injection aquarium fittings

.

Other than the raft, it would look much cooler! And the shape of the case would greatly reduce the red light beams from entering the aquarium or the room because the positioning of the holes relative to the LEDs does not allow much direct light to escape the case (only indirect red light can escape). And lastly, the case can be used for all three sizes of HOG Scrubbers: the 0.5, the 1, and the 1x, by just changing the size of the algae attachment surface, and the amount of LEDs, when building it.

Time To Print 3D:  Big or Small?

So now the question is, will it be better to buy a high-end FF machine like a Stratasys® uPrint (tm), or instead get several smaller machines like the MakerBot 2x, Kühling & Kühling RepRap Industrial, Flash Forge Creator, or Wanhao Duplicator 4? You would think the larger machines would be faster, but it appears they are mostly slower (although better quality) because they were meant for high-quality prototypes instead of fast production parts. However for the purpose of making a simple plastic case for a HOG Scrubber, the quality of the print of the smaller machines seems to be just fine. Speed is probably more important; the small machines can print one case (with two pieces) in 8 hours, but the big machines can take 18 hours because they include lots of support material. And at $18,000 each, it might be difficult to get more than one big machine; thus production of the parts would be severely limited.

.

.

Then comes "repeatability". I'm still unclear on how the 1000th part from a small machine will look. Many people say the big machines will continue to print great parts even after 1000 of them, and that the smaller "toy" machines will break down in no time. Since Stratasys just merged with Makerbot, maybe this will become more clear soon. The Kühling & Kühling RepRap Industrial, however, appears to be the only machine that is designed to print ABS parts in a production fashion, as opposed to a prototype fashion.

.

Low-cost clones of the Replicator: The Flash Forge Creator, and the Wanhao Duplicator 4
Low-cost clones of the Replicator: The Flash Forge Creator, and the Wanhao Duplicator 4

.

The cost of the plastic materials (ABS) is a big factor too; the plastic for the big machines is about 10 times the price of the plastic for the small machines, so I'm not sure big machines are practical, considering the low target price of the finished plastic part. Thus the low cost "hobby" machines really have an advantage by using standard 1 kg spools of ABS. In particular, the Chinese clones of the Replicator such as the Flash Forge Creator, and the Wanhao Duplicator 4, are less than half the cost of the Replicator 2x; however they are not enclosed and thus would need an enclosure added to prevent warping.

Printing specs

The inside case (the one which goes in the water) is about 70cc of plastic. It seems to print well with 1mm thick walls,  which is about 2 or 3 shells @ 0.270 mm extrusions. And so far, a 30% infill seems sufficient. Black is the basic color, because the idea is to block the red LED light from going through the plastic. The outside case (which attaches through the aquarium glass with magnets) is the same size, but without the air tube or bubble dividers.

The big question in printing the HOG case is how to keep the modern-looking rounded shape but still allow the ABS part to attach to the build-plate so as to prevent warping when it cools. The Stratasys-printed sample was of stellar quality, almost museum-like with zero warp, but of course it uses supports (which thank goodness are water soluble). The Stratasys machine was able to print the HOG with full rounded features and no flat-surface added:

.

Stratasys® print of an earlier version of the HOG. Incredible detail, but slow and expensive
Stratasys® print of an earlier version of the HOG. Incredible detail, but slow and expensive

.

The MakerBot Replicator 2x sample needed to have the bottom rounded-portion flattened a bit so as to be able to attach to the build plate without supports, and the final version is what appears at the top of this Kickstarter page.

Colors!

Another great thing about the FF process is the selection of colors; you might really like some of the colors you can print besides black, such as STELLAR PINK, FLUORESCENT RED, FRUIT PUNCH MAGENTA, GRAPE CANDY, NAVY WOOL, BLUE, DEEP DARK TEAL, HELSINKI SKY BLUE, ACID LAKE BLUE, GREEN SEA, GREEN, NUCLEAR GREEN, FLUORESCENT YELLOW, YELLOW, SAFETY ORANGE, DARK BROWN, RED, DARK SANGUINE RED, WHITE, SLATE GRAY, SILVER GRAY, STONE GRAY, NATURAL WHITE (these are the ABS colors offered on the MakerBot site).

Keep in mind that the lighter colors will mix with the red light of the LEDs when the red light passes through the plastic, and may form an unplanned color. White turns red; grey turns red; yellow turns orange, but black does not let light through the plastic. Any light which does go through the plastic is in addition to the red light which escapes along the side of the glass, which has a neat red-circle glow. Also, any color besides black would need to have the MSDS checked to make sure it is aquarium safe.

The first HOG Scrubber pre-orders (rewards) will be black, since it's a proven color for HOGs and will need to be fine-tuned on whatever printer(s) we get. However we might offer custom colors as stretch goals; each color has it's own printing characteristics and must be fine-tuned on a separate, dedicated printer (thus enough pre-orders would be needed to keep one machine busy with just that one color).

The rest of the HOG Scrubber is the same as what we are currently building at www.Santa-Monica.cc: the LEDs, power supply, magnets, etc. The power supply works on both 120 and 240 volts, and has an American plug; you can just cut the plug off and install a plug from your own country if you need to, or get an adapter. But the power supply does not need to be changed.

Stretch goal ideas

Colors; country-specific power plugs; timer built into power supply. Remember that stretch goals are not part of the regular Kickstarter campaign; stretch goals may or may not be added near the end of the campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Larger Aquariums: If you will be feeding more than one frozen food cube per day, then you can get multiple HOG1 or HOG1x units (by using different usernames), and then you would just clean one HOG at a time on a rotating schedule.

Clownfish tanks: Even though we use a clownfish as our main Kickstarter logo/picture, you should know that a clownfish does not normally eat algae off of surfaces. So if you are planning a totally-self-sustaining aquarium which does not require feeding, you should probably choose a different fish.

Satisfied Backers: Although of course you can change (increase, decrease) your pledge amount anytime up until the October 28 deadline, if you are unhappy at all with how things are developing we will automatically cancel your pledge for you, no questions asked.

Warranty: All HOG Scrubbers have a 60 day repair or replacement guarantee. Details are on our www.Santa-Monica.cc site, and in the instructions posted above.

Safety: The power supply on all HOG Scrubbers converts the 120/220 volts down to a safe low voltage of just a few volts, and isolates the HOG from your home's power. If you accidently drop the LEDs into the water, nothing will happen and they will continue to work.

Shipping: Can be shipped to any country; when you pledge, it will ask if you need shipping outside of the U.S., which requires a slightly higher pledge. After funding ends (October 28), you will be emailed for your shipping info. You are not asked for your shipping info at the beginning, because a lot of people (students, etc) move during the campaign.

Website Ordering: These new 3D printed HOG Scrubbers will be available on our www.Santa-Monica.cc site immediately after funding ends (October 28) for the same prices as shown here on Kickstarter, however all pre-orders here on Kickstarter will be shipped first. Thus it is estimated that if you order a 3D printed HOG Scrubber on our www.Santa-Monica.cc site instead of here on Kickstarter, it will be shipped summer 2014.

Investment Disclaimer: This Kickstarter campaign is not an offer for any investment opportunity, whether as debt or equity.

Animal Disclaimer: It is up to the backer (you) to learn the proper ways of keeping the fish, invertabrates, or corals alive. HOG Scrubbers simply provide filtering.

So with your help, we hope to start 3D printing some great HOG Scrubbers so you can have a beautiful aquarium without all the work!

Risks and challenges

The biggest goal here is to 3D print the final HOG Scrubber. Not having owned a 3D printer before, it might be that although a few scrubbers can indeed be printed, hundreds of scrubbers cause problems which delay the time line. The "pro-sumer" grade of printers seems to be at a stage where constant adjustments and/or repairs of the printers are needed.

Then there is the "bubbler" of the inside-the-aquarium half of the scrubber. It is designed so that it does not need any work after it has been printed (our current design needs a lot of cutting and gluing of the air tubing). In the event that the printed bubble-divider does not function well enough for most people, we'll go back to a cut-vinyl-tube like we use now (or something similar).

If pledges become numerous enough, there might be a problem that seems to occur with other large projects, whereby it's difficult to get the product made and shipped to everyone on time. This is especially true for a 3D printed product that takes an entire day to print on one machine. Therefore our minimum goal of $40,000 includes two machines, which allows one for backup.

In the event that an unforeseen factor completely prevents delivery of the 3D HOG Scrubbers (printers are outlawed, etc), we will substitute our current hand-made HOG.5, HOG1, and HOG1x scrubbers.
