Hooray! Announcing our Stretch Goal: £10,000
Your unimaginable support to help emerging designers in Mumbai showcase their work on taxi seats has led us set a Kickstarter Stretch Goal of £10,000. This will enable us to help a total of 30 designers have their work be printed, stitched and fitted onto a Mumbai taxi seats (more details in Costs).
As a big thank you - here's our 6th Taxi, already picking up fares in Mumbai (more details in Updates).
Announcing a special £200 reward!
The Taxi Fabric project is all about providing Indian designers with a unique platform to show off their work - using taxi seats as their canvas.
Design can often be taken for granted in India. It's believed that older generations don't understand it or recognise it as a proper profession or something worth studying; design to them, just performs a function. They don't realise that it can create an impact. And with so few spaces for designers to show off their skills, it's hard to change that perception.
We want to change that with this project. We want to help Indian designers have their work not only be seen but also allow them to connect with members of the public who up until now perhaps haven't understood that design can tell stories and create emotions.
So far we have designed and fitted 5 taxis.
Until now, it has been a self-funded the project and as much as we wish we could, we cannot afford to fit any more taxis without your help. We're asking for £8000 which will go towards:
- Engaging 20-25 more designers, allowing them to have their designs be printed, stitched and fitted into as many working taxis across Mumbai
- Taking the taxis off the road for a whole day to be stripped and refitted
- Travel and equipment costs
- Documentation of the whole process (film and photography)
- Website and hosting fees
- Memorabilia / Reward costs
If we reach our target, it is our aim to have fitted all 20-25 Taxi Fabrics by the end of the year which is roughly 1 taxi a week.
It only takes 2-4days from receipt of final artwork to a full fitted taxi in service- what takes time is getting the designs perfect (which is the most important part!).
Every Taxi Fabric design has the opportunity to be seen by upwards of 4,000 people in the 4-5 months that it features in a Mumbai taxi. If we reach our target, that will mean 120,000+ people in Mumbai will have seen the work of these designers by Christmas.
The Taxi drivers have commented that they believe their customers are not only engaging with them more, but most of them also ask them about their designs featured in their taxis. Some have even told us that they are getting more fares because their taxis stand out in a way the other taxis don't.
3 out of the 5 designers who have made Taxi Fabrics have been contacted by members of the public who have seen their designs and want to work with them further.

Risks and challenges
The primary risk involved in this is project is that in the sad eventuality that we do not reach our £8000 target, the project will not be able to continue unless designers pay for their own costs. Unfortunately for most emerging designers in India £150 is a lot of money irrespective of the guarantee of upwards of 4,000 people seeing your Taxi Fabric design.
As we have already designed and fitted 5 Taxi Fabrics - we have ironed out any and all production problems and have clear lines of communication with all our vendors, suppliers and stitchers etc. enabling us to know exactly how long every stage of the process takes as well as assuring their delivery.
Having members of the team in London and Mumbai also means that there is always someone on hand to deal with any problem that may arise. We're very fortunate to have a team of very talented individuals who are dedicated to making each Taxi Fabric a success.
We hope that you would like to donate to this project to help give these designers a totally unique place to show off their skills and talents and tell more of the wonderful stories around their lives in Mumbai.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
