The Quarterly is an award-winning photographic print journal that invites professional photographers and writers from different backgrounds and disciplines to share a stories inspired by a singular theme. Each issue contains exclusive photography from around the world, printed and housed in one beautifully designed publication.
ONE THEME TO RULE THEM ALL
As those of you who backed our Issue Two Kickstarter will know by now, the theme for Issue Three of The Quarterly is ‘Tribes'. We've had an overwhelming amount of amazing ideas proposed for for the issue and we are now looking forward to sharing the incredible work of all our contributors with all of you. Honestly, you'll be blown away. It’s going to awesome.
SHOWCASING TALENT FROM AROUND THE WORLD
The Quarterly is an international publication with a focus on the field of photography, featuring the work of a wide range of extremely talented folk from around the world and a variety of different backgrounds, covering everything from travel and photojournalism, to fashion, portraiture and real life issues.
Each issue is given a theme. Issue One explored the theme of Censorship. Issue Two looked at Life and Culture, and Issue Three looks at Tribes. For each issue, we invite photographers and writers from around the world to propose ideas for articles and if their creative interpretation fits the theme, we bring it to life together and share the finished article with our readers.
THE QUARTERLY IS AN EXPERIMENTAL PUBLICATION
Started in early 2013. The Quarterly is taking a new approach to publishing. We aim to do things differently and strive towards doing what's right. It seems to have become ingrained in our culture to accept the fact that magazines are going to be 70% glossy adverts and 30% content. We don't do adverts in our magazine or on our website, and we never will. We're focused on bringing you 128 pages of 100% original creative work. No ads. No fillers.
We're not just about big bold photography either. Our goal is to produce a publication that inspires and engages the reader through both visually striking imagery and the written word.
Publishing a magazine without advertising is a lot of work but it’s worth it. Our aim with The Quarterly has always been to test conventions and try to approach things from a different angle to the rest of the industry. Financially, we've managed to break even on Issue One and Issue Two, but with the funding raised from this Kickstarter, we'll be able to afford a much larger print run, which means increased exposure and cheaper cost-per-issue. In a nutshell, the more copies we can afford to print, the cheaper we can afford to sell The Quarterly for.
It’s hard to believe The Quarterly has been out in the world for more than 6 months now. Everyday we learn something new and we're getting closer to making The Quarterly a sustainable business model, which will stand the test of time and show the industry it is possible to do things differently. What’s more, The Quarterly can now officially call itself an award-winning publication as we recently won best-designed publication at The Midlands Cream Awards 2013.
WAIT, THERE'S MORE...
MAKING A NAME FOR OURSELVES
As well as winning awards, we've also started to make a name for ourselves in the photography industry and in the media. As well as being featured on Creative Review, Designcollector, Freunde von Freunden and Kickstarter’s official blog, our proudest and most amazing mention to date was appearing as one of 12 cool new photography publications in the British Journal of Photography’s Cool & Noteworthy review of 2013.
WE BELIEVE IN PRINT
Nothing beats the smell of a beautifully-printed publication. Too many magazines out there sacrifice the quality of their publication to save money. This detracts from the impact of the contributors’ work and doesn't provide the high-quality platform that hard working creative professionals actually deserve. We use high-quality uncoated paper stock, so you can appreciate the beautiful photography in all its glory.
The content published in each issue of The Quarterly will always be created specifically for that issue. You will never see work that’s already been published elsewhere. It’s all totally bespoke and supercalifragilistically wild.
We don't have any investors or private financial backing. We're mostly funded by our full-time jobs and our hopes and dreams which means we're able to focus on bring the awesome, without sacrificing on quality.

WHERE YOUR DONATIONS WILL GO
Everything we do for The Quarterly is done in an honest and open fashion. It's just the way we prefer to work.
All funds raised will be used to directly cover the initial print run of issue Three. By covering our print costs from the start, we won't need to apply for a second credit card. Your support will mean that we'll create a budget that we can use to print issues Four, Five and Six hopefully if everything goes to plan.
The more funding we get the better, but we don't want to get too ahead of ourselves, so we're happy with seeing how it goes and will be grateful for any level of support you're able to offer.
Risks and challenges
Our aim is to publish an awesome magazine, which does things differently, but as we are trying to make something new we usually come face to face with a new challenge with every inch of progress we make.
We have an amazing team of dedicated volunteers who do this for free because they honestly believe in what it is we're striving towards.
Proposals for The Quarterly are open to the entire world so our biggest challenge in terms of production is coordinating people all over the place to work together to make something amazing, which everyone falls in love with and is immensely proud of.
Everyone knows publishing a magazine that does things without using any advertising is going to be risky, but it's the risk that keeps things exciting and constantly drives us to strive for better.
The biggest challenge will be getting the finished copies of The Quarterly sent out and delivered to you. We've estimated March/Early April as the date for delivery, but please be aware that writing a handwritten thank you note for every single copy may result in some minor delays.
