About

Arctic Circle Expedition Residency 2019

Hello, welcome to my Kickstarter Fundraiser. I'm Sandra Hawkins, a multimedia artist based in Ottawa Canada working in painting, photography and installation art.

I’ve been selected out of hundreds of international applicants to attend, The Arctic Circle Expedition, Arts & Science Residency this June 9 to 26, 2019. The Arctic Circle Expedition is organized and subsidized by The Arctic Circle, a branch of the New York-based, not-for-profit foundation The Farm Inc.

For this once-in-a-lifetime artist's residency, I'll spend nearly 3 weeks on the tall ship, Antigua, sailing Svalbard Archipelago, Norway, only 10-degrees from the North Pole. In addition to having to pay to participate in the residency, I’ll need to raise funds for travel, special arctic ice boots and art supplies.

I am committed to pay for the Expedition Residency fees and book the Ottawa to Svalbard flights by March so am launching my Kickstarter immediately!! My goal is CA$7,500.  If I don’t reach this goal, I will receive nothing.

I've created a list of Donation Pledge and Thank You Gift (rewards) levels focused on adding my art to your collection. My Thank You Gifts are inspired by Arctic Circle experience whether created during or post residency. Please visit http://www.sandrahawkinsexpedition.blogand http://www.sandrahawkins.ca

What is the Arts & Sciences Expedition?

This unique artist residency is a program of The Arctic Circle and has been sending artist to the Arctic Circle since 2009. Visit The Arctic Circle's website for more details. http://www.thearcticcircle.org

An artist residency is typically located outside of the participant’s everyday distractions.

What will I do?

I will travel over 5000 kilometers from Ottawa Canada to Longyearbyen Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. I will spend nearly 3 weeks aboard the tall ship, Antigua, a traditionally rigged barquentine, while collaborating across disciplines on creative projects relating to climate change. We will be sailing the frigid international waters of the Svalbard Archipelago, part of Norway, just 10-degrees from the North Pole.

The Antigua, a three-mast sailing tall ship is 162.5 ft. long, 23.5 ft. wide, includes 16 cabins, a large salon for meals and meetings, and studio spaces suitable for individual or interdisciplinary collaborations. Typically, there are 26 residency participants, eight professional crewmembers, four guides and a dog on board.

What will I accomplish on the Expedition?

The unique beauty of this on-water arctic location with glacier landscape, Arctic Ocean waters and huge skies will be inspirational, all while collaborating across disciplines from around the globe on creative projects.

Using painting and photography, I’ll be experimenting with reflected and transparent light shapes and shadows to communicate the dynamic of shifting environmental states such as melting of glacier ice to water.

Rare opportunity

This is also a rare opportunity for me to exchange with scientists on conceptual approaches for using Sonar echo sound measurement of water depth, and movement of the ship within an immersive art installation. I have an app that calculates the ships movements considering winds and currents, and produces a visual picture.

I’m particularly intrigued with the up-close opportunity by dinghy excursions to observe the impacts of climate warming in progress, more visible in the Arctic Circle at this time of year during Spring Solstice 24-hours of daylight.  (2 images)

Why is this important at this time?

I believe my art contributes to climate change discussions individually and across organizational structures. Ocean levels are rising due to melting arctic ice impacting global coastline habitations. This residency is important to my art because it offers collaborative strategies to deal with the uncertainties of climate change. As an artist, I want my art to challenge socio-political perceptions at the same time as evoking intimate resonance around the uncertainty, loss, memory and identity.

I feel there is a symbiosis of what I'm doing in my multimedia art practice and the mandate of The Arctic Circle Expedition residency “a nexus where art intersects science, architecture, education and activism – an incubator for thought and experimentation for artist and innovators who seek out and foster areas of collaboration to engage in the central issues of our time”. The residency program fosters collaboration projects, and post residency continuation of collaborations between participants with opportunities for exhibitions, public talks and publications reaching a wide international audience.

It is the logical next step for my art research and creations relating to my concerns for melting arctic ice and global implications for disappearance of coastal habitats due to rising Ocean levels.

I have a proven track record of international artist residency successes, at Banff Centre in Alberta Canada, Hungarian Multicultural Artist Centre in Budapest Hungary, Vermont Artist Studio Residency USA, and my widely supported Arctic Return Self Directed Artist Residency in the Canadian Arctic Circle. The follow-up for these artist residencies includes new insights to my art production leading to increase in exhibitions, awards, publications and public talks. This June 2019 International Arctic Circle Expedition residency is in Svalbard Norway, a unique water vantage point on a tall ship expedition and up-close dinghy excursions viewing glaciers. In addition to sharing my experience with backers through thank you gifts/reward, it will generate international collaborations in which my art is seen by a broader audience.

Risks and challenges

The greatest risk I'm facing is that I will not reach my campaign goal with Kickstarter.  I have developed a reasonable timeline for creating my Thank You Gifts/Rewards to accommodate the unexpected and therefore have ensured being able to meet my commitments. In regard to the actual Expedition, despite my proven sea-legs as a leisure sailor, I am planning for sea-sickness medication in case our 16-cabin Barquentine tall-ship should meet extreme weather during our voyage. To prepare against risks of physical injury getting in and out of dinghies from the ship, I am currently in a training regime to improve agility, strength and stamina. I believe my previous experiences traveling on land in the Canadian Arctic climate, and my innate spirit of adventure will overcome any challenges I may not have anticipated. My greatest strength is a "can do" attitude.
