Four Small Games, by Four Creators

Paper Arcade, vol. 1 is the first of what will hopefully be a series of small games collections by different creators. This project was created for two distinct reasons:

  • To offer small games creators a new place to showcase their work
  • To pay creators fairly, both up front, and for all future sales

Tabletop games don't always compensate creators fairly. To that end, Paper Arcade will pay the creators of the games $0.10/word for the initial writing, and 20% of all future sales of a volume they are included in. As well, this campaign has no content-related stretch goals. For every $500 raised, every person working on this project gets another $100. Because people deserve to be paid for their work.

The Games

Paper Arcade, vol. 1 has four games, by four different creators. Each of the games in Paper Arcade, vol. 1 are based around the community-chosen theme of Card-Based Mechanics. Each of the game pitches was voted on by the Paper Arcade Community (join us on Discord!). The four games are:

Elements in Harmony, by Danielle DeLisle

The players are Elemental Knights in the service of the Elemental Queens. The sisters have been at war for as long as anyone can remember and the knights, who genuinely like and respect each other, ally to stop the fighting. If the knights can gather the queens in one place, they can broker a truce between them. It is a difficult quest with dangerous obstacles, but the knights are brave and worthy.

Found by Rescuers by Joe Young

A survival horror journaling game for a single player, the Survivor, trying to stay alive through a single night in an isolated location. Every day, by the light of the moon, the Survivor draws a card from a standard deck to determine which event of 52 occurs in that hour of the night, answering the questions presented on the card in a journal. After twelve days of journaling, representing the twelve hours of the night you spend alone, the game ends, resolving based on events that have already occurred and the final card drawn as the sun finally rises.

It Goes Without Saying, by momatoes

Uh-oh! Ellen's in hot water. She's in an interview. Or a date. Or in the midst of an alcohol-fueled rant to her mother. Regardless of the situation, you, as Invisible Beings Who Control Ellen's Communication Centers, must bail her out of this dire situation. Together, play cards that indicate what bits of messaging you think Ellen should say.  But be careful! Whatever message one player crafts has an effect on the next message their fellow player makes. Teamwork makes the dream work, but can you save Ellen's communication woes when you yourself can't even talk?

Psychopomp, by Chris Challice

You are a psychopomp, a spirit who guides the departed to where they are meant to be. If you succeed, they will find peace. If you fail, they will wander as tortured ghosts. You are different from other psychopomps; you were once human. Through titanic effort, you attained your current existence for one, specific purpose. There is a person you cherish, one that has yet to cross the veil. You are determined to be there for them when they do.

The Team

Chris Challice

Christopher Challice is an author and tabletop game designer from Ontario Canada.  He's written a novel, Seith and Sword, and a storygame, Vanagrard, for Pendelhaven Press. Danielle DeLisle

momatoes

Bianca Canoza, also known as momatoes, is an aspiring tabletop game designer from the Philippines. She is currently working on her game anthology about creative games for stories of wonder. In her day job, she mashes the keyboard and fiddles with graphics to create corporate communications for a multinational development bank. Her portfolio can be found at http://momatoes.com/

Joe Young

Joe Young in an analog games designer from Cincinnati, Ohio. His previous design experience includes contributing to and publishing the Black Folder, a limited run small games digest distributed at GenCon 2018, as well as collaborating on “The Words and Deeds of the Chain of Tlachic”, a system-agnostic campaign frame Kickstarted during Zinequest. When not playing or designing games, he can be found seeking out new and exciting meals.

Tracy Barnett

Tracy Barnett is a non-binary tabletop games creator and publisher. They have been working professionally in tabletop RPGs for the last seven years and have over 20 publications to their name. They are coordinating, editing, and doing the layout for this project. More info about them can be found at www.theothertracy.com.

The Breakdown

Here's where all of the funds are going for this project:

Writers: $600 – $0.10/word at a goal of 1500 words for each of the four writers

Editing (Tracy): $360 – $0.06/word for 6,000 words

Cover (momatoes): $200, flat rate for cover creation

Layout (Tracy): $400, flat rate for layout

Project Coordination (Tracy): $340, flat rate for project coordination

KS and CC Fees: $100

Total: $2,000 USD

And, as stated above, for every $500 raised beyond the 2k goal, each person working on this project gets another $100. This is in addition to an even 20% royalties split between all five creators for all post-KS sales, forever.

The Wrap-up

We all hope that you like the look of this project and dig the games. We also hope that you'll choose to support five independent creators who each want see people enjoy their work. If you back this, please let others know, with our deepest thanks! <3

Risks and challenges

This project was designed to minimize risks. Each of the four games is already drafted and just needs to be edited and laid out. For this first project, all of the art is going to be free-to-use art where any artists are appropriately credited.

There are always unforseen challenges. Life could throw any number of curveballs, but we have built a community of creators who are supporting this project. If delays or issues come up, we will communicate them as clearly as possible, so everyone knows where we stand.
