Stories from the War of Metal and Bone

Midgard is full of stories. Though dwarven armies cover the land, there are those who chronicle the happenings of the world; if humanity survives, someone has to tell the tales of the brave deeds that ensured such survival.

Tales of the Skalds is a compilation of fiction, essays, and Fate-based additions to the world of War of Metal and Bone. There are five short stories (with possibly more to come). Each one will give you a glimpse into both the world of Midgard, and into the mechanics and ideas behind a game of War of Metal and Bone. They also echo and reflect some of the events of the first Iron Edda novel, Sveidsdottir.

The Stories and Their Extras

The Trial – A hapless younger brother gets more than he bargains for after attempting to steal his older sister’s horse.
- An essay about Merkstave runes in Midgard
- New NPCs for War of Metal and Bone

Helgi – When dwarves attack a holdfast, a disabled young woman must fight for her life.
- An essay detailing disability and its handing in War of Metal and Bone
- New NPCs for War of Metal and Bone

Guðkjósa – The epic poem of Brigitta Cragasdottir, sister of Sigrid Sveidsdottir, and her trials as one of the Godschosen.
- An essay about gender, sexuality, and the setting of Iron Edda
- New NPCs for War of Metal and Bone

After the Flood – A pair of con artists reconvene after their last job went… other than expected.
- An essay about the Weirding Runes that didn't appear in War of Metal and Bone
- Details on how to do an Iron Edda-style runecasting
- New NPCs for War of Metal and Bone

Aftermath – War spares few, even among the ranks of the powerful Petruvian Legion
- New setting generation tables geared for a Petruvian campaign of War of Metal and Bone
- New NPCs for War of Metal and Bone

All of the stories, essays, and game content have been written by Tracy Barnett, creator of the Iron Edda campaign setting. The stories and game content have been, or will be edited by John Adamus. All of the art for this project will be (and has been) done by Brian Patterson. The layout will be based on the same layout as War of Metal and Bone, which was created by Tiara Lynn Agresta.

Stretch Goals

Every $1000 we raise beyond the initial goal will add another short story + extras to Tales of the Skalds. As they unlock, we will announce possible pitches for the stories and let the backers vote on which stories will make it into the collection. Once each story is chosen, we will announce the game content that accompanies it. If we end up with more than 10 total stories in the book, we’ll begin plans for Tales of the Skalds vol. 2.

Risks and challenges

Our previous Iron Edda Kickstarter was an unrealistic project. We’ve learned from that experience, and we’re confident of our ability to deliver what is promised. The first five stories are already written and edited. Layout is in progress, as is work on the game extras to accompany each story. As well, we are limiting the content that can be unlocked by this Kickstarter so as to keep costs under control and to make sure we’re not in over our heads.
