Iron Edda Setting Expansion Project (Canceled)
An expanded setting/rules guide, and a companion novel for the world of Iron Edda.
The Iron Edda Expansion Project
This project is an effort to fund two new titles for the Iron Edda campaign setting - Iron Edda: Sagas, and Iron Edda: Dragon & Sparrow.
Iron Edda: Sagas is a comprehensive guide to the country of Midgard and the lands surrounding it, written for the Fate rules found in War of Metal and Bone.
- Midgard, land of epic Norse myth and the center of the war against the dwarves.
- The Petruvian Empire, a crumbling cultural melting pot of all of the conquered nations under the banner of Empress Sulvinnia .
- The Desert of J'Goll, a mighty arid landscape that holds the secrets of the Traders and their cabals of mages.
- The Isles of Mist, home to a strong Druidic people, and with many connections to other Nine Realms.
- The Lands of the Jorufaegir, a vast collection of tribes of differing traditions and customs, each with different capabilities to fight the dwarves.
Each of those areas are referential to cultures in our world: Vikings, the Roman Empire, the Fatamid Caliphate, British Celts, and the Algonquin and Iroquois people of North America. As well, Sagas will contain information about the rest of the world, making sure to focus on the inclusion of cultural references to African empires, indigenous Pacific Island peoples, South American empires, and peoples of eastern Asia and the Indian sub-continent.
Each section will contain NPCs, area-specific holdfast and settlement generation tables, and new options for the Runescribed, Authority, and Seer Magic Extras presented in War of Metal and Bone. In addition, the book will have detailed area maps, and more information on the dwarves (svartalfar/duergar), elves (alfar), and giants (jotunn) incorporating information on their history that was revealed in Iron Edda: Sveidsdottir.
Dragon & Sparrow is the sequel to Sveidsdottir. It continues the story of Sigrid, not through her eyes, but through the experiences of two people she left behind.
Rin is the ex-wife of Sigrid, haunted by the events of Sveidsdottir. She must overcome her fear and her own mental scars to take hold of her own destiny and become the woman she is meant to be.
Marsa, former Jarl of Fellheim, is a woman broken by hatred and loss. She seeks vengeance against Sigrid at any cost, and will travel the breadth of Midgard to see it through.
This novel is planned to be around 70,000 words, and will tie into the information given in Iron Edda: Sagas. Focusing on two other characters will give additional depth and perspective to the world of Iron Edda. It promises to offer the same depth of introspection and personal journey that Sveidsdottir offered.
Battle of the Clans
As with Iron Edda: Sveidsdottir, backers will get a chance to have a say in the course of Dragon & Sparrow. This backers-only update contains a link to a survey where each backer can vote for one of the Warrior Clans of Midgard. Whichever clan rises to the top at the end of the campaign will take a prominent role in the story of Dragon & Sparrow, to the benefit or detriment of the entire world of Iron Edda.
Writers -Tracy Barnett, creator of Iron Edda, will write all of Dragon & Sparrow, and parts of Sagas. Brian Patterson, co-owner of Exploding Rogue Studios, will co-write Sagas. As well, consultants for the differing cultures in the setting will be hired for knowledge and review of the material to ensure accurate representation, rather than appropriation.
Editors - Reprising their roles as developmental editors for previous Iron Edda projects, John Adamus will edit Sagas, and Amanda Valentine will edit Dragon & Sparrow. We are happy to have their expertise, familiarity with the setting, and critical eye to make our words shine.
Layout - Similarly, Tiara Lynn-Agresta and Matt Jackson will each do layout for the project. Tiara worked on all of the Iron Edda games, and will handle Sagas. Matt Jackson won a collegiate award for his layout work on Sveidsdottir, and will do the layout for Dragon & Sparrow.
Art - One of the major benefits of the partnership that is Exploding Rogue is the availability of Brian Patterson to do artwork for our projects. Brian will continue the style of art found in War, World, and Bloodlines of Metal and Bone, in his own excellent style.
Note: There's a mis-wording on the reward tiers: all hardcover backers get PDFs of both Sagas, and Dragon & Sparrow. This information is also in the FAQ.
Risks and challenges
This is Exploding Rogue's seventh Kickstarter campaign, and we've learned a lot along the way. This is our most ambitious effort yet. The logistics of delivering two products, at the level of quality we expect from ourselves, will be challenging. However, we are used to balancing multiple projects at once. Our two previous Kickstarters, Karthun: Lands of Conflict, and DEAD SCARE are in the editing stages for the text, and will likely be shipping around the same time as one another. Shipping those games at the same time will be a great opportunity for us to refine what we know about wrapping books up, shipping, and fulfillment. We are confident that we are up to the challenge.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
