Pathos War of Gods is a tabletop role-playing game set in a fictitious version of the ancient history where living myths roam the world, and mortal heroes arise to create their own legends.
You decide the fate of one of those heroes.
Will you stand up for the weak
or conquer their Empires.
Will you fight for the gods
or challenge them in battle.
Only you can decide which legend you want to tell,
which hero you want to be.
"The era of the immortal beings has come to an end.
We gods are just remnants of a time long gone.
Old ideals replaced by mortal legends,
surpassed by mortal fame.
The era of gods has to end."
-Pluton, God of the Underworld
Before we dive deeper into the world of Pathos, we would like to show you the six main goals we want to accomplish with our system. These goals illustrate the core strength we see in our system. Furthermore, they define our guidelines in the process of its creation.
Hopefully, you'll agree with them and support our style of creating Pathos. If not, talk to us on Discord if you are a backer.
■ We Want The Rules To Feel Natural
They should enable complex character builds without being overbearing. Once you understand the system, building a character takes no longer than a few minutes.
■ Don't Be Repetitive, Be Creative
Every ability, skill, item, and class should feel different. We want a system without just numerical values stacking up. We want every mechanic to feel unique and engaging.
■ Fluid Tabletop Like Gameplay
Pathos combat and roleplay interactions should never feel sluggish. We want to create a fluid gameplay experience without sacrificing complexity or interesting mechanics.
■ Our Setting Should Be Comprehensible
The world of Pathos should feel familiar to players and yet be filled with new and creative ideas. We want to make the imagination and creation of your new hero as easy as possible.
■ Easy To Modify And Gamemaster Friendly
We want gamemasters and players to be able to create encounters, items, and effects that suit their needs without great effort. To ensure this, we want to design the rules to be as versatile as possible.
■ Encourage Character And Group Play
In Pathos, we want to develop different mechanics, that apart from simply gaining experience points, support, and reward character play. This includes character interaction as well.
■ High-Quality Print
When buying Pathos: War of Gods you will receive a full-color, hardcover, tabletop roleplaying book in full size (8.5 by 11 inches) with approximately 350 pages. We are using high-quality book pages to create a more valuable feel with every page you turn.
■ Over 640 Abilities, 120 Skills, 192 Path Powers And More
From new innovative rules to the mind-blowing number of abilities, each and every one of them unique, Pathos is full of ideas. None of them are just passive numerical values stacking up, but abilities having an actual impact on the game itself.
■ Full Of Artworks From Great Artists
Like in this Kickstarter, we want to enliven the world of Pathos with many colorful artworks drawn by great artists. We want you to feel inspired by the art in our book, even when just skimming through it to find a specific rule or ability.
■ Special Editions With Beautiful New Cover Artworks
When buying a special edition book, you can choose from 3 different stunning covers. All of them inspired by the cultures of Pathos. We hope you like them as much as we do, and consider adding these books to your bookshelf.
■ Fast And Easy To Use
When designing the PDF, we aim to create a quick and easy alternative for you to play or read Pathos. At the table or on the go, our goal is to make the PDF as good as our hardcover books.
■ Advanced Bestiary PDF
Featuring over 25 different creatures on up to 50 pages, the Advanced Bestiary PDF is a must-have for any hero and future monster hunter. Furthermore, this PDF also features new types of monster abilities for every gamemaster to use.
■ Advanced Armory PDF
Enhance your combat with this 50 page PDF, full of new weapons, armors, and magical items for your heroes to use. Besides that, this PDF will feature new additional item abilities and mechanics for you and your heroes to use.
■ Mysticism and Rituals PDF
Those who travel on the path of divine enlightenment will find the following additions in this 50 Page PDF: New rituals, godly powers for them to shape the world with, and other mechanics enhancing your interaction with gods in roleplay intensive situations. This PDF highlights the powers and curses bestowed only by the gods themselves and the GM, of course.
Imagine a world where the legends told in ancient times were more than stories. Where the gods of the old days live among mortals, ruling them with unmatched power. A world where the ancient civilizations, that left only ruins, never ceased to exist.
This is the world of Pathos, and in the Core Rulebook, we feature three different of these ancient civilizations.
■ The Roman Empire And Its Unstoppable Legions
Home to great inventors and philosophers, the empire's advancements in technology and magic are unmatched. Their cities filled with innumerable creations. Powered by the water of the aqueducts, the Romans rise to new heights of power and wealth. But in their will to ascend, they struggle to keep their balance and begin to forget their gods. The people of the Roman Empire are changing, and their gods follow them.
■ Kemet The Golden Land Of Egypt
Ruled by their gods, the people of Egypt are devoted to faith. Their cities hum with divine power, every aspect of mortal life controlled by immortal eyes. In their might, the gods bless Egypt with vast riches, extend the life span of their most devoted followers, and fertilize the land. In its millennia-old history, Egypt's influence has slowly grown beyond its borders, unavoidable like its golden desert.
■ The People Of The Germanic Tribes
Beyond the civilized land of the arrogant Romans and their strict bureaucracy lies sheltered in the vast green forests, the realm of the Germanic Tribes. Wild and untamed, these forests are home to many dangerous creatures, giants, and fierce gods. Even though they are divided, most of the Germanic tribes have developed a symbiotic relationship with this sanguinary environment. Their Druids perform long rituals sacrificing goods, animals, an even their own kin to the forest in exchange for its protection.
In the following part, we would like to show you how the Character Creation in Pathos: War of Gods works. As defined in our goals, we want to enable complex character builds, but we don't want you to have to work overtime to play them. To ensure this, Pathos works with an ability tree system that can be easily combined in different ways.
In the core rulebook of Pathos: War of Gods, you can choose between eight different classes or how we call them, Paths. Each of these Paths has its own ability tree containing sixteen different abilities, which define its core capabilities.
Furthermore, every one of these Paths come with four sub-paths also containing sixteen different abilities each. During your Character Creation, you choose which Path and two of the four Sub-Paths that your class provides, you want your hero to follow. Using this method, your hero has access to up to forty-eight different abilities, every one of them handcrafted for your playstyle.
■ The Vanguard (Sub-Path: Devastation, Tenacity, Champion, Echo)
The path of fierce warriors and tough protectors. Those who follow this path are unstoppable soldiers, skilled with numerous weapons and masters of hand to hand combat
■ The Infiltrator (Sub-Path: Assassin, Outlaw, Shadow, Affliction)
The path of dauntless and cunning combatants who are willing to take risks to win a fight. Those who follow this path are skilled with poisons and illusions fooling their enemies and waiting for the right moment to strike.
■ The Conflux (Sub-Path: Chimera, Golem, Elemental, Spirit)
The Path of durable and strong-willed heroes. Walking between the line of mortality and divinity those who follow this path are able to control their bodies and surroundings as one single being enabling them to surpass their limits and accomplish inhuman tasks.
■ The Dauntless (Sub-Path: Beastmaster, Guerilla, Sniper, Sublimity)
The path of mindful heroes who always seek an edge in battle. Those who follow this path train animal or scout out the terrain to gain vital advantages. They set traps or ambush their opponents to end fights quickly and lower the risks for their allies.
■ The Paragon (Sub-Path: Protection, Empathy, Balance, Blood)
The path of empathic and caring heroes who want to lessen the burden of their companions. Those who follow this path are able to connect the raw life essence of living beings and create strong, lasting bonds. Using this ability, they can share emotions, lessen the pain of their allies or heal wounds by sharing their own essence.
■ The Shaper (Sub-Path: Fire, Earth, Air, Water)
The path of resourceful and clear-headed heroes. Those who follow this path are able to shape environmental energy to create devastating effects and other useful instruments of pure arcane might.
■ The Strategist (Sub-Path: Art of War, Armsmaster, Perfectionist, Oracle)
The path of tactical masterminds, using finesse and their combat experience to guide the flow of battle. Those who follow this path are charismatic leaders and fearless commanders always a step ahead of the enemy.
■ The Invoker (Sub-Path: Eyes, Wings, Fangs, Scales)
The path of perceptive and open-minded heroes. Those who follow this path have a deep connection to the natural flow of divine energy, enabling them to create or summon powerful creatures who aid them in battle.
Using an Ability as an example, we would now like to introduce you to the basic combat system of Pathos. Please keep in mind that this is just a small part of the actual rules of Pathos and we would love to show you more on our Discord and in our only for backers beta, coming up end of this year.
Spirit Fist Explanation:
+0 to Hit | Costs 2 AP | Cooldown 3 Turns | Single Target | Range: Melee
-This ability ignores any Damage Reduction.
-Roll 2 Attack (Seperately against the same target). Each attack deals 1D6 damage.
-For every 4 damage this ability inflicts, regenerate 1 Inner Resolve (The Conflux main ressource)
To Hit: Pathos works with a new kind of to Hit mechanic. Instead of a character, just stacking up numbers to deliver basic attacks, every ability has it's own positive or negative to hit modifier. To hit your target, you have to roll 2D6 and reach a value of 7 or higher with all the modifiers from your path or ability. Easy right?
Cooldown Time: In Pathos, every ability has a cooldown time to determine the minimum length of rounds you have to wait until you can use a certain ability again. Cooldown ranges from free abilities that are usable multiple times per round, up to cooldown times that last two or even more rounds. This should encourage players to use different abilities and create strong combinations.
Action Points: Abilities are not only limited by their cooldown times but by their action point cost as well. At the start of each turn, a hero generates 4 Action Points to spend on the different abilities they know. They may use as many abilities as they like, as long as they have enough action points left, and as long as they are off cooldown. To show you how many action points an ability costs, we use a simple coloration pattern like the one displayed below.
Ability Tree: Now, with the basics out of the way, we want to show you how an ability tree in Pathos looks like. The following ability tree is from the Conflux path.
To determine how proficient a hero is in certain tasks like climbing, riding, or crafting, Pathos features a new kind of skill system. Please keep in mind that this is just a small part of the actual skill system and if you like to learn more, please connect with us via Discord. On Discord, we publish and discuss some of our ideas for Pathos to create a system that everybody wants to play.
In Pathos, all of the ordinary skills are gathered into six greater skill trees. Your proficiency in one of those skill trees determines your overall aptitude in all of its ordinary skills. For example, if you are proficient in the tree of Physis, you are able to climb swim and run long distances without buying those talents separately.
Knowledge: Gathering all education-related skills and providing greater insight into the mystical world of Pathos
Theft arts: Gathering the shadowy skills of the right people, theft arts are a must-have for thieves and shady characters.
Society: Gathering heroes who want to spread rumors or use their tongues as weapons deadlier than blades, Society supports charismatic characters and those who want to become it.
Physis: Gathering those who want to transcend their human limits, swim like a fish, carry impossible weights, or never get tired.
Craftsmanship: Gathering those who want to create exceptional art, weapon, and armors. Craftsmanship also grants access to the creation of magical objects and alchemy.
Wilderness: Gathering all environmental talents, Wilderness let you be on with the wildlife, granting your access to enhances senses or animal languages.
By advancing in the skill trees, you are not only gaining proficiencies in its ordinary skills, but you can also select its greater gifts.Gifts are the core of the Pathos skill system and are exceptional powers surpassing human limits.
The following is an example for the Theft arts skill tree showing some of the gifts you might gain when advancing in Theft arts.
Steal Noise: The hero can steal the voice of one person or object they can see, silencing every noise they would make (every object counts separately). For every quality grade achieved, they can select up to one person or object.
Octopus Squeeze: The hero can squeeze into tight spaces reducing their size by one step for every quality grade achieved.
Never Gone: The hero can create an illusionary afterimage of an object they steal somewhere, creating a copy that's mimicking the properties of the original (except for magical effects). This afterimage lasts 10 minutes for every quality grade achieved.
Seal: With this skill, the hero is able to tap on a mechanism to lock doors and chests for 1 day per quality grade achieved.
A hero is not entirely whole without his equipment, and in Pathos, this is exceptionally true. The weapons and armors we feature in Pathos: War of Gods carry different abilities, comparable with those you gain when choosing and advancing in a Path. Equipping the right armor or using the perfect weapon in combination with an ability can be the key to success.
Gladius: "Soul Hunter"
The first weapon is the legendary Gladius "Soul Hunter" bestowed by Pluton to his most devoted followers. Once blood touches the Gladius runes emerge on its edge showing information about the victim.
Staff: "Heart of the Wild"
The second weapon is the legendary staff known as “Heart of the Wild.”The staff consists out of artistically twisted and intertwined roots that move similar to snakes. It allows its wearer to create massive trees or large wooden objects like a bridge within seconds.
Bow: “Sekhmets harp “
The third weapon is the legendary bow called “Sekhmets harp.“ As a gift from the Egyptian goddess of war, the bow is capable of many powerful deeds one of them changing its form and size. Using this ability, the bow can alter its shape between different pieces of weaponry, including a spear and a short sword.
Armor: "Armor of the Wolf Spirit"
This ancient piece of legendary armor named "Armor of the Wolf Spirit" was forged many centuries ago by the giants themselves. It bestows the wearer with wolf-like senses and enables him to run at an incredible speed. Furthermore, this armor can summon a ghostly wolf companion which aid its wearer in battle.
Armors work the same way as weapons except they have upgrade points for you to spend and a damage reduction table like the one below.
In Pathos: War of Gods its up to you which kind of hero you want to be.
Will you seize the sword and become a fabled warrior?
Or will you study ancient texts and unriddle the mysteries of the past?
Will you set sail to new horizons and become a famous explorer?
Or will you honor the gods and carry their names to the farthest corners of the world?
To portray your growing name and experience as a hero, we invented a mechanic called FAME. At the end of every adventure and every time your character does something memorable or heroic, the Gamemaster may choose to reward you with FAME. FAME could be gained through positive or negative actions, it's up to you and what kind of campaign you are playing.
You may choose to invest these FAME points in two different ways. Either you improve the mortal fame of your hero and make them known far and wide. Or you dedicate their fame to the gods, gaining immortal fame and become their favorite champion.
All community stretch goals will be decided via polls. We will give the samurai dog community a lot of options and narrow them down as we go. Once all the details have been voted on, we will design the rest and give whatever the community came up with a beautiful artwork.
The next goal after the Pathos is funded will be displayed at the top of the campaign with a detailed description.
