We made it!!! This is happening! You pushed us over the $12,000 goal, and then two additional stretch goals! Thanks for all of your interest and pledges. I have been dreaming about these deluxe packages for at least a year now, and wow! You made them possible. Thanks.
Hi! This is Sam from Black Tape For A Blue Girl, and this is the Kickstarter for our new album These fleeting moments. It’s been seven years since the last Blacktape release, and what’s really cool about this one is Oscar - our original vocalist - is singing with us again after 17 years. And I think you’re really going to like this album, because it’s getting back to that classic 90s sound: the ethereal, darkwave, neoclassical sound. For this release I’m picking up on threads and sonic themes from the Remnants era.
Oscar's daughter Dani sings on these tracks as well. Nick plays viola; Brian is on drums. I wrote the tracks and play guitar and electronics. The lyrics are deep, emotional, existential — the concepts you love in my music.
This Kickstarter has a $12,000 goal which funds the two parts of the deluxe edition. There’s the CD in a unique landscape-style DVD-sized digipak with a 12-page booklet, and there's the double-LP on 140-gram black vinyl. These editions will only be created if this Kickstarter meets the goal, so I hope you can pledge something, even if just the $3 supporter level.
I appreciate all your enthusiasm for my music over the past 30 years. Let’s make this happen. Thanks.
Project Stretch Goals
Now that we've made it to $12k, there are additional milestones in the fundraising where extra items are added to make These fleeting moments even more special.
I've created some add-ons for pledgers to get even more cool stuff. Visit this page for info on what's available and how to claim yours.
More about the $12,000 goal
$12,000 is a lot of money, I agree, but these exclusive deluxe editions are pricey to make in short runs (probably 300 units, but more if there is demand.) Your contributions also help recoup the costs that went into creating the album: paying the musicians, studio time, mastering, buying the bass I modified for the cover photos, time I wasn't working at Projekt so I could make my art, things like that.
More about the music on These fleeting moments
For this album, I wrote those intense, passionate songs that Oscar delivers so wonderfully. Adding Nick’s strings atop my synth-horn and electronic textures and writing 25 minutes of instrumentals really brings it back to the essential Blacktape sound.
I open with “The vastness of life,” a 17-minute five-part epic reminiscent of Remnants’ “For you will burn your wings upon the sun.” It’s powerfully solemn, stirringly elegant and evocative — drifting between defiant, resigned and striking vocal sections and floating ambient passages. The lyrics explore the album’s theme: questions about life choices, our personal story, and if we have the courage to live in service to our ideals.
The songs range from emotionally wrought to delicately sensitive, detailing fears of revealing the true self, betrayal of one’s body in the hands of a lover’s promises, contemplating our interconnectedness to others, or poking fun at mankind’s belief that we are more important than other animals.
The fleetingness of time has become part of the questions I am asking. We are finite in our being but infinite in our hopes and longings. Life will pass us in an instant, and I ask myself if I am courageously living my true self in the world? Or are we all a bit hunched over, hiding from the possibilities?
A few notes
Note 1 -- These fleeting moments will have a retail release on August 12. The track listing is the same as the Kickstarter edition, but the standard edition is in a CD-sized digipak, the booklet is square and only 8 pages.
Note 2 -- The Kickstarter-funded CD will ship in late July (via Media Mail for USA customers) to arrive before the August 12 street date.
Note 3 -- If you pick a reward with CD & Vinyl, you will receive two packages. (1) The CD & Bike Shop 12" in late July. (2) The Fleeting vinyl (hopefully) in December if the pressing plant keeps to the schedule (see "Risks and Challenges" below for more info on this).
There is a longer section about ship date / shipping rates in the FAQs below.
Note 4 -- The LPs will be pressed by the same plant that manufactured the Remnants of a Deeper Purity Vinyl, Furnace MFG. They offer high quality, “audiophile-approved” pressing.
Note 5 -- I received this message, "I need to wait 'til I get paid to pledge though - bah!" Actually, no, you don’t need to wait. Credit cards aren't charged until after June 20th! You can certainly pledge now. :-)
Note 6 -- The LP will be mastered by Anders at http://www.ghostsounds.net -- he mastered the Remnants of a deeper purity LP a few years ago.
Note 7 -- The Mercy West photo set is "tastefully nude." All tiers $70+ include the set, if you want it. I understand some people might prefer not to have this photo set; I will check in with you after the Kickstarter ends for your preference (Yes, of course Mercy is over 18!)

PHOTO SET MEMORABILIA (#19 --- $75) (4 reserved, so far)
I’ve created various sets of photos from my archives. Your choices are shown below this text. Pledge at the $75 level, and then send a message with which set you’d like (for example “19-j”). We’ll figure out your catalog CD when I’m shipping in July (choose between Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Sam Rosenthal or As lonely as dave bowman). When a set is pledged, it will be removed from this page and added to the archive blog. You also get everything in the $50 FLEETING CD PLUS level.
Lyric rough + recording sheet (#26)
LARGER MEMORABILIA (#24 -- $250)
Everything in $70 CD & VINYLS + a one-of-a-kind item from early-era Black Tape For a Blue Girl.
Why should I make a pledge here at Kickstarter?
These deluxe editions will only be created if we hit the $12k goal. Getting involved at any pledge level increases the chance it will happen. Honestly, I know you could buy the standard edition CD in a store for less, but if you can spare the money, and if you enjoy the art I've created over the years, your pledge helps me realize the extra-deluxe editions of These fleeting moments that I have in mind. You can be my patron of the arts. Thanks!

Risks and challenges
I've run six Kickstarters; all successfully funded with all premiums fulfilled. I've run the Projekt label and webstore for 33 years; I'm experienced at following through on projects, boxing things up and getting the boxes into the mail. I have decades of history meeting budgets on over 320 releases including complex limited editions.
The album is recorded & mastered. The cover is shot & has been roughly designed.
The biggest delay I can predict is the long time frame at the vinyl pressing plant. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/samrosenthal/black-tape-for-a-blue-girl-the-bike-shop-vinyl-ep/description -- My "Bike Shop" 12" vinyl EP took 5 months in manufacturing, which is actually "normal" these days. Thus I'm predicting December for the LPs, 5 months after the CD. I hope it will be sooner, I'll try to make it sooner... but realistically, I can't promise the plants will be faster than this. It'll be worth the wait, though! :)
If your premium includes both CD and Vinyl, the CD will ship in July. The Vinyl will ship in December.
I forsee no other challenges to completing this campaign once it funds. Let's do it! : )Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
