Campaign information:

Hi -- I'm Sam from Black Tape For A Blue Girl, and this is the Kickstarter campaign for the "Bike Shop" vinyl EP (featuring Michael Plaster of SoulWhirlingSomewhere on vocals). These are four brand new songs, only one of which will be on our next album. I'm asking for your support to fund this release.

Let me tell you a little bit about the EP.

I’ve been working on the new Black Tape For A Blue Girl album (these fleeting moments), and I'm almost finsihed writing it. Last Christmas I recorded guitar parts for a new song; in August I wrote the lyrics and that became “bike shop/absolute zero." I was reflecting back on my last few relationships: thinking about the good parts but also kind of wondering how they fell apart, and how it took so long to recognize they were over.

I've worked with Michael Plaster of SoulWhirlingSomewhere on his Projekt releases for over 20 years; I've always loved his voice and emotional delivery. The lyrics I wrote for "bike shop" were perfect for him to sing; I asked if he would be involved. When he said "yes," I got excited and wrote three more songs really fast — like in a week! Knowing Michael would be the vocalist inspired me to write these songs that sprung from little bittersweet memories.

You get the back story on "bike shop" with these three additional tracks. Think of it as diving deeper and hearing more about a character you met in one song on the upcoming album.

I was back in Brooklyn two weeks ago and I recorded drums on two tracks with Brian Viglione (of Violent Femmes and The Dresden Dolls). I love how quickly this release has gone from idea to something you can listen to!

I want you to hear this new music! Go to Bandcamp and download the entire EP for free! These are rough mixes; they’re almost done though not mastered. That’s part of what we’re raising money for: mastering, manufacturing, and paying Michael for his participation.

You can make this 12” a reality.

If you like the tracks you've downloaded, hopefully you’ll come back and chip in three dollars. Or even more, 'cause there are some cool premiums to the right that you can pledge for. With enough of your support, we can make this happen.

I’m glad you’re interested in my music, and I hope you participate in this Kickstarter. Thanks a lot.

Sam

150 gram custom color vinyl (yellow with black flakes) in a limited edition of 500. Color album jacket and b&w lyric sheet. Kickstarter pledge copies will be signed by Sam and Michael.

The track "bike shop/absolute zero” will be included on the spring 2016 Black Tape For A Blue Girl album, these fleeting moments; the other three tracks are exclusive to this release (though I'm thinking of working with my female vocalist on an album version of “she’s gone”.)

These fleeting moments will be a return to the ethereal darkwave/darkAmbient sound of the early 90s Blacktape CDs. The tracks on the EP are a bit of an anomaly from the others I am recording; these are sparse and sensitive acoustic guitar pieces with Michael's vocals.

It’s a weird time in the music industry. Records only sell a fraction of what they used to, and artists are experimenting with new ways to cover the cost of creating our work.

I like crowdfunding because it lets me connects directly to those of you who believe in my music; this campaign is supported by people I've met during past campaigns and also people who've followed the band for years but are only now making contact. It's great to work with you on this.

Download the "Bike Shop" EP right now at Bandcamp. I'm glad your checking out my new music and I hope you enjoy it. If you can, please contribute something to assist this release's realization. I appreciate that!

Whatever you give, you're supporting art -- and that's super-cool of you!

Why should you get on board here at Kickstarter?

The EP will only exist if we hit the $3000 goal. Getting involved at any pledge level increases the chance that we'll be successful.

It will be sweet if this works out; I hope you become part of it.

I paid the preliminary expenses on this release through the Patreon campaign for my music. Patreon is a crowdfunding concept where dedicated fans of Black Tape For A Blue Girl show their faith in my creations with a monthly contribution. If it wasn't for my patrons, this release would not have happened. Thanks to all of you who back me at Patreon.

What am I spending your money on?

• Mastering and cutting the lacquers @ Bonati Mastering: $600 (Josh is located near my old apartment in Brooklyn, in Carroll Gardens. I visited his place a few weeks ago. Sleek!)

• Manufacture 500 12” EPs & Covers @ Cascade Vinyl: $2300 -- (Cascade is a local Portland pressing plant. I'm happy to support local small businesspeople!)

• Pay Michael for his contribution

• Boxes & cardboard packing material

• Labor to package and prepare boxes for post office

• Graphic design & creating the music: (I am doing this, no charge)

• Buffer for unexpected expenses

• Kickstarter: 10% fee

Please join with your support for The "Bike Shop" vinyl EP. Thanks so much.

- Sam

Risks and challenges

I've run five Kickstarters; all successfully funded with all premiums fulfilled. I've run the Projekt label and webstore for 33 years; I'm experienced at following through on my projects, boxing things up and getting the boxes into the mail. I have decades of history meeting budgets on over 320 releases including complex limited editions.

The tracks are recorded, the mixing is nearly done, the songs still need to be mastered. The cover isn’t shot yet; I do my own photography and design, so when this funds I will find a model and a location and get to it. I have an idea already, and I've taken the back cover photos.

I’ve priced out the vinyl at CASCADE VINYL PRESSING here in Portland. They are saying 10 - 12 week turn around time right now, which is why I have an early February delivery date. Better to have it completed and finished early, than to get it to you late.

Of course, I have no control over the mail or foreign delivery. After the holidays is usually a good time for the mail service; my fingers are crossed.

I don't see any major challenges to getting this done once it funds. Let's do it! : )
