Wow! 55 minutes to go and people are still getting on board! We passed our goal yesterday and we might even break $8000! Some of you are grabbing the $10 download and many are getting the $50 2-LP swirled vinyl edition of Remnants of a deeper purity (and your name in the booklet). Thanks for all your great messages and your pledges. Let's see what we can do by midnight!
Along with your LP, you can also chose from additional options that include a signed holiday card from me (Sam) and some very exclusive memorabilia.
People often ask if I am going to put out something from Black tape for a blue girl on vinyl. In fact, there was vinyl years ago for the first two albums. But that was a different era, and now it's time for us to put out vinyl again. When I say "us," I mean you and me; because together, we can make Remnants of a deeper purity exist on vinyl. It's your support through the pledges (to the right) that will raise the money so this project can happen.
Blacktape's 1996 Remnants album is the best seller for the band; and not only that, recently on Facebook the fans voted it their favorite album. It's the perfect release to put out on vinyl.
Remnants is a long album (77:10 minutes); it's going to be a double-lp. And if you ask me, the only way to go is deluxe! 140-gram marbled red & clear swirled vinyl, a copy of the original 9-track album on CD in a paper sleeve, and a luxurious 8 page album-sized booklet. And everyone who picks a premium that includes the vinyl gets their name in the booklet!
Keep in mind that the Kickstarter only works when we hit our $7000 goal. So it's your support, and spreading the word, that is going to get the album funded.
“Like Dead Can Dance, black tape for a blue girl dramatically flirts with symphonic decay.” - The Philadelphia City Paper

And Holiday Cards! That's right, it's that time of the year. So indulge yourself, or your loved one, with this beautiful and tactile treasure. At many of the pledge levels I'm going to write you out a holiday card that should show up right before Xmas; my way of saying 'thanks' for believing in Black Tape For A Blue Girl and getting involved.
(Outside of the USA, your card will probably NOT arrive in time for Xmas, unless Santa is working extra hard!)
The music business has changed drastically in the 17 years since the release of Remnants. The way I see it, (for underground artists) the music business is now a patronage system. Instead of Kings supporting the arts, you - the fans - are the patrons of the art you love. I have created three Kickstarters - all of which have funded - and I am amazed and thankful to have fans like you who care enough about what I do to support my art.
Back in 1996 when I recorded Remnants with Oscar, Lucian, Vicki and Mera, we had no idea the album would touch so many people and have such a lasting impact. It feels really great to be here, almost 18 years later, getting ready to celebrate Remnants again.
Thanks so much for your help in that.
Why should I get on board?
This vinyl release will only fund if we make our $7000 goal. Getting involved at any pledge level increases the chance this release becomes reality.
You might wonder why I am asking for $7000
Simply put, $7000 is the minimum this release is going to cost! The vinyl pressing + jacket is $4155 at Furnace MFG. The 8 page booklet is $1700. The mastering is $350 (and there's a pledge level for that one special person who wants to sponsor the mastering). Pressing the CD to include in the package is $400. Plus the cost of shipping the vinyl and booklet from the plant to me, and the shipping of the prizes to you, and the 5% that Kickstarter takes, and the 3-5% that Amazon takes to process your card, and the... and the.... It all adds up, doesn't it ?
$350 for Mastering? Really?
Yes. Talented people deserve to be paid for their quality work. Last year, Mannequin Records in Italy released my Tanzmusik album on vinyl (there are still a few copies left, here). Mannequin connected me with Anders Peterson at GS Mastering & Post (www.ghostsounds.net). Anders did such a fabulous job preparing the Tanzmusik files for the vinyl pressing, that I knew I had to have him on this job. I want to get you the best sonic experience of Remnants of a Deeper Purity.
$1700 for a booklet? Really?!
Yes. It's an 8-page full-color booklet that is 12" square. That's quite a lot of paper to cover with luscious Remnants-goodness; it's expensive to print! We gotta go deluxe with this, if we're going to do it at all. Right? : ) And don't forget that along with the lyrics and the photos, for those of you who buy a Vinyl package, there'll be your name listed in there as well... Sweet!
There are a lot of options in the rewards section to your right. Holiday cards, download copies, additional copies for your friend. Find the pledge level that fits your budget, and your love for the band.
A video about THE BLUE NOTEBOOK premium:
The Ephemera#1 premium (SOLD OUT)
The Ephemera#3 premium ($150) An 8-page "safety copy" xerox of my notes from the 1996 Projektfest. These are my "reminder notes" used on stage when I performed. Included: 1. Redefine pure faith 2. Into the garden 3. Scream, my shallow 4. The flow of our spirit 5. A good omen 6. We watched our sad-eyed angel fall 7. Slow blur 8. Remnants of a deeper purity 9. For you will burn your wings upon the sun 10. Chains of Color Missing: 11. I have no more answers 12. The turbulence and the torment 13. The rope (the final 3 tracks we performed are not here, for some reason).
The Ephemera#4 premium ($125 | SOLD OUT) 2-page notes for "Remnants of a deeper purity" used while performing in 1998 or 1999. It has my notes hand-written on a printout of the lyrics.
The Ephemera#5 premium ($100) Laminated floor set-list, used while performing in 1998 or 1999. With scribbled-out tracks in grease pencil.
The Ephemera#6 premium ($75) A single sheet of paper with a print out of the credits, with some changes; and on the back a sketch of the album cover.
Remnants Cassette ($175) You're going totally old school, with the only copy I have of the Polish cassette issue of Remnants! Plus the signed press sheet, a 2nd copy of the vinyl, and the other cool stuff!
The Ephemera#7 premium ($125) A print sheet from the 1996 printing of the Remnants "big book" on glossy paper.
The Ephemera#8 premium ($125) A print sheet from the 1996 printing of the Remnants "big book" on matte paper.
The Ephemera#9 premium ($150) One page of notes used during our performance at Projektfest'96. Song titles written by Sam, notes written by "the sound guy," who happened to be Martin Bowes of Attrition!!!
The Ephemera#10 premium ($225) Three page of notes used during the recording of Remnants of a deeper purity. A print-out with handwritten notes. At first I thought it was Oscar's notes, but then I tracked it down and it's violinist Vicki Richards, which makes sense based on which songs have notes. "Yes, looks like the way I make my Letters and G clef." Vicki wrote. Unique for having early names for some of the tracks: "With My Sorrows" is called "Sea-fairing song." The instrumental parts of "For you will burn your wings…" is called "Chaosesque." Song #9 is called "Tight in your arms tonight (not written yet)." and "I have no more answers" is called "All for you."
Thanks so much for your involvement.
Ok. I understand that vinyl's not for everyone. I get that. But if you'd still like to make a little contribution towards this happening, you can drop by and put $5 in our cup. Your $5 pledge gets you the 5 track download EP.
I'm sending those out immediately. You'll have a nice EP to listen to this afternoon!
Risks and challenges
I've run three previous Kickstarters, all of which funded and were fulfilled. I'm experienced at making these happen. I've run the Projekt webstore for 30 years; I'm familiar with boxing things up and getting the box into the post.
After this album funds, the only challenge I envision is a delay at the pressing plant. I am working with Furnace MFG in Virginia, and they tell me, "Indeed a lot of plants are at capacity right now, but we are operating on an approximate 8 week turn." Just to be safe, I say you'll have the vinyl in April, but I hope you will have it sooner than that.
I have all the digital files for the audio and I am the designer on the album artwork, so all of that will get done fast.
Getting your Holiday Card by Xmas is a bit of a challenge, based on the mood of your mail carrier. I will put the cards in the mail December 17th & 18th, in hopes of a Xmas arrival date. Of course, if we reach $7000 earlier than the 16th, I will mail the cards ASAP.
For foreign customers, Santa will have to work overtime for a Dec 24 arrival. It's possible you'll get them in time, but not exactly probable. Overseas fans should keep that in mind when they choose their reward level.
Thanks for joining us to make "Remnants of a deeper purity" on vinyl into a reality. I appreciate it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
