Hi! This is Sam from Black Tape For A Blue Girl, and this is the Kickstarter for Blood on the Snow, a 4-song Maxi-CD of all-new songs. (Download on Bandcamp.)
Continuing the revival of Black tape for a blue girl’s classic 90s darkwave/ethereal sound.
I launched this campaign to raise $1500 to create a collectible edition of Blood on the snow for my Kickstarter supporters. We reached the goal in 4 days! 12 hours later the 100 Exclusive Edition CDs (signed, numbered, with backer's name in the booklet) were all pledged. An additional 50 unsigned / unnumbered Standard Edition CDs were added, which sold through on the final day of the campaign. 50 additional standard copies are for the band and a few for my Italian distributor.
Listen to the music: Stream or download the entire release at Bandcamp. For the time being, it's name-your-price (free!) download; however those who pledge at the $3 level here, also get the backer updates emailed to your inbox.
Please read the IMPORTANT NOTE below. You will pay me for overseas postage separately from this Kickstarter after the campaign has ended.
I suspect most everyone reading this page already knows Black Tape For A Blue Girl. Just in case… We’re an American goth/darkwave/ambient act that I (Sam Rosenthal) started in 1986. We’ve released 11 studio albums over the last 31 years (listen at Bandcamp) and performed 149 shows (complete list)! These days I’m based in Portland, Oregon, and focused on recording new music.
I released Black Tape For A Blue Girl’s 70-minute album These fleeting moments in August of 2016. It was the first new album in 7 years and the first in 17 years with original vocalist Oscar Herrera. The deluxe limited edition CD and 2-LP funded here on Kickstater. The album was also supported by my wonderful Patreon patrons who give a monthly contribution towards the creation of my art.
As I wrapped up that campaign, I promised myself — and all of you — that I wouldn’t fall back into a non-productive slump. I decided to stay focused on making new music; towards that end I set myself a goal of writing an EP by the new year. Well, I did it! These 4 songs (18 minutes of music) are the results. They’re all-new tracks created and recorded after These fleeting moments was released.
This release continues stylistically from These fleeting moments and features the same band. Oscar & Dani sing; Nick plays viola; Brian plays drums, and Chase plays guitars and synths on one track. I wrote the songs and play guitar and electronics.
The lyrics are darker and bleaker than the album; I get a sense the theme is futility, though perhaps more specifically it’s about dedication to lost & hopeless causes. The dark mood of the last year of American politics inspired a desolate and worried anxiety as I wrote these songs. (Read more about the themes of Blood on the snow on this Kickstarter post)

In most Kickstarter campaigns, shipping is charged during the campaign and (as Kickstarter tells us), "Funds that backers pledge to account for shipping costs will count towards a project's funding goal."
This creates a problem for two reasons...
(1) Kickstarter + processing fees take 10% of postage. It means I would have to charge 10% more to cover the fees; that's a bad deal for you.
(2) With postage counting towards achieving the $1500 funding goal, a project could fund without raising enough to cover the cost of manufacturing the CDs. That wouldn't be good for me.
The simple solution is you pay me directly for the real cost of the postage.
Non-USA Postage will be billed after the campaign funds. I will send you a message asking you to paypal me directly for postage to your country.
How much additional will the postage cost?
USA: postage is included. Canada: $9.50. Rest of World: $13.50. Mexico: $11.50 -- but please read Note 5 about Mexico, below.
A few more notes
Note 1 — Songs from this release might appear on the next Black Tape For A Blue Girl full-length. How many is unknown; it really depends on how the album comes together later this year. I asked my backers on Patreon their thoughts, and they were OK knowing the songs might be on the album.
This release is a unique limited edition item; it's exclusive and collectible.
The money raised here really just covers my costs: mastering + manufacturing + Kickstarter fees + postage. It doesn't cover the time or expenses that went into recording. But that's OK.
Note 2 — I’ve finished recording and mixing Blood on the Snow. I’ve shot the cover photo and will take the rest of the photos and design the release over the next month (check the updates for progress).
Note 3 — In a couple of weeks Blood on the Snow will be available for name-your-price on Bandcamp. Everyone can download it and enjoy the new songs. It'll be available just as soon as it is mastered. Then, it will also be available for $3 on iTunes & Amazon, and streaming at Spotify, etc.
Note 4 -- In the past, I've received this message, "I need to wait two weeks 'til I get paid, before I can pledge!" Actually, no, you don’t need to wait. Credit cards aren't charged until after the campaign ends! You can certainly pledge now. And you probably should, because I expect these to sell through before the end of the campaign. :-)
Note 5 -- Mexico Postage. For $11.50, your CD will ship by First Class Mail International. HOWEVER, if it gets lost or stolen, you will have to pay for the reshipment. In the past, I've had a lot of trouble with mail to Mexico going missing. Here are some ideas. (1) Consider having the CD shipped to a friend in the USA. Then they can deliver it to you. (2) Upgrade to Priority Mail International, which costs $37. Expensive, but I've never had a problem with Priority delivery.
Either way, postage will be a separate payment via PayPal made after the campaign funds. It is NOT part of the pledge you are making today.
I appreciate all your enthusiasm for my music over the past 30+ years. Let’s make this happen. Thanks.
