Hi there. My name is Sam Ness.
I'm a traveler, musician, busker, and story-teller from Sauk City, Wisconsin. Now based in Madison, I've made my career from telling stories and playing songs from my time hitch-hiking and adventuring across parts of Europe, Asia, and New Zealand. I write songs based on the lessons I've learned, or the lessons I keep trying to learn, as I wander country to country.
Last year I put out an album called "Whispered on the Wind". It was with a full band behind me, horns and strings and drums and whatnot. But after this past year, I've felt my art drawn to something more intimate. Something soft and gentle. Something surrendering.
The lessons I've learned this year have reminded me of lessons in my past. Lessons of hope, of love, and love lost. I found myself drawn back to old songs laying dusty on the shelf, untouched in years, but still very relevant for me.
At a place of meditation and self-reflection rather than professional advancement, I started spending my nights in my studio playing these old songs and finding peace working them into the audial paintings I saw in my mind's eye. Now that I've taken a step back, I can see the potential that these songs could help others find peace in their day, and I found a need to see them finished.
Unfortunately, I'm not well versed in playing some of the instruments needed for the album. I'll need to hire session players to write the parts I hear in my mind. On top of the music, there's the studio post-production which gets mighty expensive mighty fast; mixing and mastering. After that, we have the cost for the physical production and packaging of the discs, and the cost of digital distribution. We can't forget the artwork for the discs, and the graphic design to smooth everything out.
All in all, an album is very expensive to make, and I really can't get this one out without your help.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk with this project, is that I'll be working on finishing the album while I'm traveling and busking my way across the UK. Today's world is much smaller with the internet, but I've never done a project like this where I'm not in the room with my session players, so it will add a new element to this adventure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
