On Sam Mickens' 2011 solo debut, Slay & Slake:
"Mickens strikes a graceful pose between brooding abstraction and glammy abandon" --A.V. Club
"When they do finally click, Slay & Slake's tunes will haunt you... like a cult icon." --The Stranger
"This is anti-music (which makes it tru punx, amiright?)" --punknews.org
Good tidings everyone. I am seeking support to fund the recording of my next solo album, "Kayfabe: Laamb of G.O.D.", support which will go to the coffers of an excellent piano-equipped Brooklyn studio and, primarily, of some of the greatest musicians in NY. With a Muppets-worthy cast of players gathered from my own Ecstatic Showband & Revue and Fourth World, as well as other friends from Deerhoof and abroad, I want to make a deeply orchestrated and grand album for the soul elevation of all peoples. Of course the more we raise the more massive and extensive the drama, but I have budgeted for what I would consider a baseline cosmically aware majestic production.
"Kayfabe: Laamb of G.O.D." will be, in some respects, a sequel to 2010's Brooklyn stage play "Kayfabe: Game of Death" and, in others, the greatest synthesis of my musical interests and desires to date--an old-school concept record marrying charged glam rock with left-field R & B and the wide terrain of guitar-based rock music. It will tell a story.
I have worked for my whole adult life in the decreasingly extant indie rock world and infrastructure, composing for and contributing to records you may have enjoyed like Villainaire, Frost Giant, Fabulous Muscles, Safe As Houses, and many others. I have dragged myself from the very bottom of this country's socio-economic strata to moderate success in the punk rock world but want to work more and go further forever. I want to make a great and timeless pop record to make the hills alive!
I am but one man and ill-equipped by the fates to finance my own art career so extend my hand in friendship to any and all of you who think this work worthy and beautiful. I love you.
