How exciting and nerve wracking at the same time!

What would cause the Solarcan picture to be entirely white once retrieved after 6 months? Overexposed? I tell you, I was pretty dismayed after one hec of a tree climb to get it up/down!

Finally received my can! Thank you so much! ❤️

      Hi Christopher,

I'm sorry to hear that. Please drop me a personal message on here - or email directly to info@solarcan.co.uk

I will investigate your shipping details now.

I still haven’t received my Solarcan...

    8. Michael Hudson on September 28, 2017

I will probably do as you suggest and use an opener to remove the lid and then just 3D print a replacement lid since I do have a 3D printer. Once I open my first one I will design a lid that fits nicely and then post it on Thingiverse and leave a comment here with the link to it for any others that have access to a 3D printer and wish to do the same.

    9. Sam Cornwell 2-time creator on September 28, 2017

      Hi Michael,

I see. Removing the lid with a tin opener is the cleanest method. It's fairly simple to make a lid out of black card if you wish. I may add a tutorial later. If it helps, simply enclosing your image in black card and putting it in an envelope will keep it safe. Hope that helps.

      Sam.

    10. Michael Hudson on September 28, 2017

Thanks Sam, I do remember reading that but it seems based on the pics that method pretty much destroys the lid and makes it impossible to re-use the can to store the original image. I was hoping someone had a cleaner way to remove the lid so that it could be put back on without allowing light leakage to ruin it. If not that is fine but thought maybe someone had done this.

Anyone have any hints on the best way to open the Solarcan when ready to see the captured image? Preferably a way to open without destroying the can in the process.

      I don't think it'll be a problem.

I've got a Brother sheet-fed scanner. Should that work just as well as a flatbed scanner for scanning the exposed paper?

Got my 5-pack today and everything appears to be in perfect condition. I cannot wait to get them put up and now the hard part is the wait before seeing the images. Thanks for a great campaign.

The last of the five packs from phase 2 left last week. Some may have arrived, others might still be making their way across land, air and sea. Hopefully you'll see it very soon.

Thanks for letting me know. You are correct- there has been two other unforeseen instances of this. If you peel the tab back slightly it'll quickly return to its normal shape.

I'll drop you a direct message about this also.

I received my Solarcan and was so excited to open it. But when I did the can was crushed on four sides - like a rounded square. The shipping tube was in perfect condition, so I'm not sure what has happened. It looks like an atmospheric pressure issue, the way something crushes inward like this. I don't want to mount it until I'm sure that the insides are still good?

What a terrible shame. I'm going to drop you a personal message to start and investigate this.

      Sam.

    39. Archaeokelly on July 14, 2017

Was so excited to see my solarcan in the mailbox today, but when I opened it all four sides are dented in. Will it still function fully? Or is there a possibility the denting messed up the paper inside? It has totally lost it's attractiveness, which is a shame, but I'm more concerned with its performance now.

Received my solar can yesterday to Spain and am very much looking forward to latching it up to my south facing balcony. Is there a maximum period for exposure? I don't seem to remember if there is. Best regards and good luck on this solar can venture and future projects.

    43. Sam Cornwell 2-time creator on July 13, 2017

      Hi Alessandro,

Indeed they should. I will drop you a personal message.

      Hi Adam,

There is currently no solution (pun intended) for fixing the image permanently. The 'fixing' takes place when you capture an image of it digitally using your phone or scanner. See update #5 for more details - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/samcornwell/the-solarcan/posts/1870674
If you're a dab-hand chemist and want to give it a go, the paper is Ilford Pearl. I'd like to hear your results.

      Hi Nora,

This is mildly complicated. If the sky is clear for the entire day during the eclipse and you're in the path of totality you should be able to see a very slight fade on the line during that day. However, Solarcan is designed to be up at a very minimum weeks. If you do try for a single day you may not get enough light for an image at all. If you'd like to discuss this more, send over a private message and I'll explain further.

      Claire,

That's wonderful! Hope you've got somewhere nice and Southern facing to place it.

      All the best,

      Sam.

Hi Sam, shouldn't the second batch of Solarcans include the cable ties? Because I received mine (1138) without them...

I just got my Solarcan today and I'm excited to mount it at my family cottage for the rest of the Summer. If I did want to fix the image could you provide details on the photographic paper and/or the fixing solution I would need to do so?

I see at least one other backer besides me is hoping to use their Solarcan for the eclipse. I'm hoping Sam can give some guidance on this--will it work for such a short exposure? I figure the whole event is less than 8 hours. Will that work? Thanks! I'm excited.

    47. Claire Day on July 11, 2017

I received mine a few days ago, thank you! Super fast shipping :)

      Hi Andy,

Any purchases made on the website will be added to the end of phase 2 shipping. I'm working very hard in the gallery right now and I am confident all singles from phase 2 will be shipped by Friday.

      Hi Tarak,

5 packs, depending on production speed will be out the door within 10 working days. We're very close to completing all pledges. Thanks for the message.

      PrebenR & LeAnn,

Thank you for explaining this while I've been working. A Solarcan is weatherproof to a degree - it'll be fine in the wind and rain if firmly secured. A bigger worry would be prying fingers or interested birds. As for exposure time I'd recommend at least a couple of months.

      Hi Markus,

You'll be receiving yours very soon :-D !

      --

This evening I will share an update on Phase 2 shipping which got underway yesterday. Thank you once again to everyone that has supported Solarcan. I can't wait to see your results.
