Online Session #2 - June 22:

Online Session #1 - June 8:

Functional Anatomy is a course in book form.

It is a thorough analysis of  anatomy for the artist. It contains extensive breakdowns of the muscular and skeletal systems, however unlike conventional artistic anatomy approaches, this course offers an understanding of human anatomy in motion and how to properly understand it's form in diverse and complex poses.

This will be the second volume of my figure drawing program, The Youssef Drawing Syllabus. It is the foundation course I teach to professional artists in the film and animation industry.

This book is is a strong resource in anatomy as a course on its own, but the artist will get the best results in their work combining it with the gesture and posing techniques from Volume 1: Movement & Form.

This book presents a clear system by breaking down the purpose of the muscles so that they can be understood through the challenges of any pose an artist has to interpret.

It will expand on the body mechanics of the figure, building off the progressive gesture system established in my drawing syllabus.  The artist will learn what actions engage specific muscles, and when muscles are not engaged.  This effects the shape and design of the muscle, and how it is handled on the form.

The Youssef Drawing Syllabus is not just a collection of notes and tips, but a structured and comprehensive course in figurative drawing.

The syllabus helps the artist maintain a strong gesture, pose, and sense of life in the drawing, while building the anatomy, so that the gesture is never lost. By building off the progressive methods from Volume 1: Movement & Form,  Volume 2: Functional Anatomy expands on the connection between gesture and structured anatomical images, and bridges the gap where other figure drawing methods have not been able to.  These tools are essential to all artists who work with the human figure, from academic drawing to stylized character illustrations.

My syllabus combines my studies at art academies around the world, my experience as a feature film character animator for Disney, my directing experience with CG/digital animators, and my training in classical ballet.

It's method applies to a wide range of artists from different backgrounds, CG & hand drawn animators, visual development artists, comic book artists, story artists, illustrators, character designers, sculptors, fine artists, art students, and anyone who is passionate in their pursuit of drawing.

Who Benefits from this Book?

  • Figurative artists
  • Academic & Representational Artists
  • Character Designers
  • Animators
  • Comic Book & Graphic Novel Artists
  • Costume & Fashion Designers
  • Illustrators
  • Photo editors ( anatomy knowledge informs use of Liquifying tool in Photoshop)
  • Sculptors
  • Modellers
  • Riggers

Essentially, any artists that work with the human figure.

For many years now I have been invited to work with feature film, VFX and video game studios around the world. Through my own experience as a professional artist, combined with the work I have done in mentoring and consulting other artists from a variety of artistic backgrounds, I developed an artistic training program to target the needs of professional artists.

In 2015, I launched a Kickstarter project to raise the funds to publish Volume 1 of the Youssef Drawing Syllabus.  I am happy to say that the campaign was successful, and the response to the book has been overwhelmingly positive! Movement & Form sold almost 5000 copies within its first year of publication. The book has been integrated into curriculums at colleges and universities, supplied by animation and VFX studios for their artists, and has been purchased by artists across 52 countries.

During my career, I have worked with incredibly talented people, and have been priveleged see the results of this syllabus I have designed in their work.  I hope this book will inspire other artists, help expand artistic awareness, and offer the language needed to have the words to express oneself through drawing.

If the fundraising goal is met, it would be amazing to push towards Stretch Goals to put more content into this volume!

There are several reasons that I have enjoyed working with the Kickstarter community.

The main reason I have particularly enjoyed Kickstarter, was the involvement with the Backer community.  The encouragement I received during the campaign for Movement & Form, after the campaign during the production process, and the feedback and stories that everyone shared once having received the book, was so supportive.  I never expected to have experienced such an amazing community of people.

Because of the wonderful response to Volume 1 - Movement & Form, which was distributed at the end of 2015, I would like to focus on publishing Volume 2 - Functional Anatomy with the same editing and production team from the first book.

I have been approached by several publishing houses to sign over the trilogy of my drawing syllabus, however a large deterrent for me is that they would be using a standard editing process and graphic designers, and slot the book into a default template.

The editors I have worked with are carefully selected, and are experienced in the art world. They also ensure that the content of the book meets an academic writing standard, not only so it can continue to be used at colleges and universities, but because I feel this also maintains a quality standard that everyone benefits from.

I want to keep control of the graphic design and page layout of the book, to ensure that the drawings and notations are clear and laid out properly with the written content.

Budget:

The funds raised would pay for the editing team, completion of the illustrations, the graphic designer to format the book into the appropriate software for export to print, the printing costs (a certain quantity of books needs to be printed to make the book affordable), costs of  the book to be shipped to a distribution centre, storage, fullfillment and distribution to you!

Fundraising on Kickstarter will allow for the following expenses to be covered:

  • Copy Editor
  • Content Editor
  • Indexer
  • Cold Read Editor
  • Graphic Designer & Formatting
  • Printing
  • Distribution/storage/Fulfillment
  • Completion of hundreds of illustrations needed

The target fundraising goal is the minimum required to cover the basic overhead costs.

The funds raised on Kickstarter with a product oriented project include the production and shipping budgets. Kickstarter groups the pledge amount and shipping of rewards into the total amount raised.

For example, on my last Kickstarter, over 100,000$ CAD was raised to support the project.  However, almost 45,0000$ of this amount was from the shipping expenses (I am Canadian, and unfortunately we are one of the most expensive countries for shipping), so none of that money went towards the production of the book.  There is also (approximately) 10% of the total funding that is collected by Kickstarter and Stripe, the payment processor Kickstarter uses.  What remained was approximately 45,000$ that needed to be put towards paying the editing team, formatting and graphic design, printing, and shipping to the storage facility. However the printing costs alone absorbed the remaining funds.

What is left to do:

  • content revision of the first draft manuscript.
  • work through the manuscript with the editing team.
  • finalize the hundreds of illustrations involved.
  • complete the graphic design & page layout of the interior.
  • establish the final cover design of the book.
  • send the manuscript to the printers.
  • deliver the book to you!

There were a couple requests on the last project for the book to be in an ebook format.  It is something I have done extensive research on and will be considered at a future time, most likely when the full set of volumes is completed.

As everyone can appreciate, there is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that go into this type of project.  This book is not a magazine,  a simple collection of quick reference materials, or generalized tips on drawing. This book is a laboured and developed course created over several years, re-written and edited so that the writing is clear and well thought out, and illustrated carefully and thoroughly to best translate the lessons, with labels and notations on the illustrations, so that the information is communicated as close to a live course as possible.

This type of book does not convert to an ebook format as easily as a novel. The whole layout of the book has to be reformatted and redesigned.  Building an ebook of this type is like building a website. The costs I have been quoted by several companies to reformat it are quite high, because of the type of layout and diagrams involved, and can start at several hundreds of dollars per page.

There is also the security to consider.  Though the book is properly published, copyrighted, and registered with the National archives, piracy is a big risk. To release the print pdf as a digital file is very high risk, and I am not a massive corporate entity that can absorb the damages of this risk.

I am very grateful for the support of the work I have done to put this book out there, and I hope that it can be understood why at this time digital releases are a risk that I don't currently have the finances to take.

Risks and challenges

Having successfully published and distributed a book via Kickstarter, I realize the challenges and hurdles that can arise, and am more equipped to anticipate them.

I have since found better printing and distribution services so that the obstacles discovered from the first publication should no longer be present.

My syllabus and this book are a passion of mine and it is important to me that the book is of the highest quality and that my supporters are receiving the best product and service possible!

If there are any delays due to printing, distribution, or any aspect of the project, I will be sure to communicate it and keep everyone updated. That being said, I will be working tirelessly and aim to finish the project within the projected goals.
