Once Upon a Runner is a 2D side-scrolling, level based runner. Rather than simply focus on endless mode, our game revolves around the story of Ella, a young fire mage, and follows her throughout her adventures through a series of in-game comic panels.
Lost in the woods, Ella stumbles upon a portal that teleports her to exotic and dangerous fairy tale worlds. You must help Ella find her way back home, but not without defeating a handful of baddies along the way.
Once Upon a Runner will be released for Android, iOS and Roku devices in the summer of 2014.
Our teaser trailer. Voice over done by the talented Nicholas Andrew Louie (@WhoisNAL).
Ella wakes up lost in the woods and finds herself traveling to different worlds via portals. In each world, she meets a mysterious guide who helps her escape the various dangers like a witch who attracts children with candy, a giant and, of course, a Big Bad Wolf. Experience the story line with beautifully hand-drawn comic panels and discover new worlds on your journey to get Ella home.
Once Upon a Runner features familiar controls that make it easy to pick up and play and blends it with new mechanics like Ella's fireball specialty. You can shoot her fireballs to destroy most obstacles and to defeat the bosses. Each boss has a different mechanic so you'll always have to be on your toes.
Control-wise, we have optend for a more traditional button press layout but plan to implement swipe controls for smartphones/tablets in the near future.

All of the artwork is painstakingly hand-drawn by our concept artist and animators. The in-game comic panels and concept artwork are created by the talented Grace Liu. The 2D sprites were all created in Flash and each frame was painstakingly created by Natalia Miramontes and Magnus Marklund. All environmental artwork and UI were created in by Tomasz Gornicki.
Often times, audio is easily forgettable in many games, except when it's really bad. We strived to provide music that complements each level and immerses the player in the environment. The talented Ray Flores has created all of the soundtracks and sound effects. Grab your headphones and listen to a couple sample tracks below.

As you can see from the demo, Once Upon a Runner is not just a concept or idea. It is in working, playable shape. With your support, SaltyPepper is a team more than capable of making Once Upon a Runner a reality.
As an indie company, the Kickstarter campaign will help us in numerous ways. Not only will it allow us to pay for our assets, lawyers, development fees and marketing, it also helps us connect with a vast community of developers and gamers. We hope to become more involved with our potential audience and, through feedback, really give gamers games they want to play.
Any Kickstarter campaign's success lies in the people who believe in the projects. Engaging in the community is vital to Once Upon a Runner's success. We humbly ask for your pledges and hope that you spread the word to your friends.
In our commitment to working closely with the community, we want to make sure that we keep things transparent in terms of where your money will go. Should we be successfully funded, the money will be directed as follows:
10% goes to Kickstarter and Amazon fees
10% goes to reward fulfillment
50% goes to paying for assets
30% goes to administrative costs (developer fees, lawyer fees, marketing, software, plugins, etc.)
As a commitment to our community and backers, our rewards are focused on giving you early access to our games, direct lines of communication to our dev team and the power to influence our future games. We want you to feel as involved as possible with the creation of our games.
Below is a list of all the pledge levels and rewards:
$1 - You will receive our everlasting gratitude.
$5 – Early access to Once Upon a Runner, 4 unlocked Ella outfits
$15 - All of the above and your name listed in a special thank you section in our credits and a signed Thank You postcard from the Director
$25 – All of the above and the digital soundtrack for the game plus some bonus songs
$35 – All of the above and high-res images of the in-game comics in a .zip file
$50 – All of the above and a signed Once Upon a Runner poster
$100 - All of the above, beta access and interview with one of our department heads for our next SaltyPepper game.
$500 - All of the above and an enemy that you designed and named in our next game (we have the right to refuse any character designs or names we deem offensive).
This project is not an idea or concept. We have been working on the game for many months now and it has evolved significantly. It is in playable shape along with proper mechanics and final assets. In fact, beta access is just over the horizon.
Of course, no project is without obstacles. As with any indie developer, there have been challenges that we have faced, and the biggest obstacles has been financial. The money earned from this Kickstarter campaign would greatly reduce our personal burden. Since Kickstarter is all or nothing, we are really relying on the generosity of others to help make our dream a reality.
We are dedicated to answering any of your questions or comments. We are excited to work closely with our Kickstarter partners in order to both keep you up-to-date on our progress and bring you the very best Once Upon a Runner game possible!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
