We're a three-woman team, sustainably foraging and farming seaweed to produce food that's good for you and good for the ocean. We forage, farm, and research along California's pristine coastline to offer you the highest quality and most nutritious seaweed and seaweed snacks, responsibly sourced from the Pacific Ocean.
We're raising money to ramp up production and get our nutrient-packed seaweed snack - Surf Snack - to more people. To do this, we need to:
(1) Buy a seaweed grinding mill
(2) Build out our solar drying infrastructure
We currently do everything by hand - from harvesting and drying our seaweed to baking our seaweed snacks. With your support, we can stay true to our DIY roots while increasing our production capacity so more people can enjoy the health benefits of this sustainable and delicious local food.

OUR SEAWEED SNACK:
We believe the seaweed we eat should be clean, local, and traceable, and we wanted a delicious, healthy snack to fuel our long seaweed harvesting days. So we created Surf Snack: our favorite sweet-and-salty seaweed crunch!
Seaweed is a nutrient-packed food that flourishes in Northern California's cold, pristine waters. We sustainably hand-harvest our own seaweed and bake it with real, organic ingredients, to share our love of the ocean and bring you this superfood of the sea. No gluten. No dairy. No nuts. No refined sugar. No preservatives.
Salt Point Seaweed is a women-owned, community-driven business. We hand-harvest seaweed in Northern California and create sustainable, tasty seaweed products. We are ecologists and environmentalists, committed to providing food for our community that is nourishing, healthy, and sustainably-harvested. When we aren't harvesting seaweed from the wild, we are collaborating with oyster farms like the renowned Hog Island Oyster Farm, to develop a regenerative ocean farming model for California.
We believe the food we eat should be healthy and responsibly made with real ingredients. And we're determined to produce food that mitigates the detrimental impacts of climate change and industrialized food systems on the ocean ecosystems that we cherish. We're in love with California seaweed, and feel a deep connection with the ocean, seasonal rhythms, and moon-tide calendar that seaweed harvesting requires. Seaweed is a nutritional wonder, and California's cold, nutrient-rich coastline is an ideal environment to grow this sustainable food. Seaweed is high in vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients like iodine. It's low in calories, but high in umami (or "savory deliciousness") that can add yummy flavors to your cooking.
Seaweed is an amazing resource that requires no land or freshwater to grow. Its incredible culinary power has been honored by cultures around the world for thousands of years. It lends a savory balance to rich and sweet foods, a hint of umami to mild flavors, and a briny richness to just about anything. Use it anywhere you use salt, and taste the difference.
We hand harvest all of our seaweed on the northern California coast. We are committed to ethical and sustainable harvesting to ensure the vitality and regeneration of these coastal ecosystems for years to come. We're always adapting our harvesting techniques to respond to the state of the coastline -- and see ourselves as stewards, invested in the health of these dynamic intertidal ecosystems.
WHAT WE'LL DO WITH THE MONEY:
By raising money on Kickstarter, we will be able to buy some much needed production equipment, like a seaweed grinding mill, and update our drying set-up, so that we can increase our processing capacity. This will enable us to widen our distribution and save us hours in the kitchen, so we can spend more time on the coast, at farmer's markets, and getting the word out about Surf Snack!

Come experience the magic of seaweed harvesting with us on a new moon harvesting afternoon! We will gather in Sonoma county on Saturday September 28 and talk about sustainable harvesting practices, seaweed ecology, and culinary uses and recipes to explore. Seaweeds will be identified based on morphology, habitat, and taste and harvested based on ethical foraging practices. We will be harvesting seaweed in the beautiful, rugged, and slippery tide pools of the California coast, so participants should be comfortable walking on uneven, wet terrain. Because of the nature of this *one-time only event* this reward will only happen on Saturday September 28 and no refunds can be made if you are not able to attend.

Salt Point Seaweed is a three-woman team - Tessa Emmer, Catherine O'Hare, and Avery Resor - supported by our community and regenerative food system partners throughout California.
Catherine has a background in coastal ecology and sustainable agriculture. She grew up next to the ocean, splashing around the sunny tide pools of southern California. After graduating with a Biology degree from Oberlin College, she worked for small scale organic farms and a small food business, solidifying her passion for local food, regenerative food systems, and health.
Tessa met Catherine as an undergraduate at Oberlin College and the two have since spent many days exploring the Pacific Ocean from Oahu, Hawaii, to Mendocino, California. After falling in love with the coastal and riparian ecosystems of the Pacific coast during a restoration internship with the Presidio of San Francisco, Tessa’s desire to work at the intersection of ecological conservation, economic development, and climate adaptation led her to pursue a master's in sustainable development at UC Berkeley, where she eventually met Avery.
Avery grew up living and working on a multi-generational family cattle ranch and has been working in sustainable agriculture ever since. At Duke University Marine Lab, she studied marine biology and environmental science and was captivated by the parallels between aquaculture and land-based agriculture. She has worked as a chef and owned her own catering company. She is integrating her agriculture experience with 10 years of professional cooking experience to bring farm-to-table culinary expertise to our team.
Catherine, Tessa, and Avery are committed to using business as a force for environmental protection, community development, and food system transformation.

- Commit to ethical and sustainable harvesting to ensure the vitality and regeneration of California coasts for years to come.
- Engage as environmentalists and ecologists at heart.
- Continually work to discover delicious and creative ways to cook with and eat seaweed.
Risks and challenges
Sourcing: Like any wild product, our harvesting capacity is dependent upon season, weather, and some circumstances beyond our control. There is always a chance that populations of seaweed are different this year, and that we won't be able to create the same line of products. However, we have been harvesting for over four years and feel very confident that we will be able to produce our products, the same that we have been for years.
Fulfillment: Currently, the three of us do all of the harvesting, production, and fulfillment. Because of this and depending on the success of our Kickstarter, we might be delayed in fulfilling your order. However, we have been successfully producing and shipping Surf Snack for over seven months, and we feel confident we will successfully meet these demands.
