Salt Lake Film Society (SLFS), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, needs your help in converting our screens to digital cinema projection. We have 7 screens and 2 venues to convert (yikes!) in order to keep bringing you the films and programs that you know and love @ Broadway and Tower Theatres. We're almost half way there but still need your help!

We know you're here because you love movies and that SLFS brings you quality films and programs that keep you coming back all year long. We also know you're here because you want to help secure the future of SLFS as much as we do. Consider a $100 donation. For every $100 donation, we'll gift you the SLFS cinema experience! Enjoy a complimentary screening pass and a dark room of film loving friends like you who come for the movie and stay for the movie. If 500 cinephiles give at this level, we meet our goal!

SLFS Digital Deadline
As part of a larger campaign effort, our Kickstarter campaign is part of a larger goal of $700,000 needed to convert all 7 screens @ Broadway and Tower Theatres (that's $100,000 per screen!). Why are we only asking for $50,000 right now? We'll tell you:
Our staff is working tirelessly (and crazy long hours) not only running SLFS business-as-usual, but researching and looking into diverse funding streams to achieve our goal of converting all 7 screens. Turns out this is no easy feat! Actually, we kind of knew it would be, but the dramatic emphasis seemed like a good fit here. In addition to our $50,000 Kickstarter campaign, we've been working to gain funds from grants, loans, leases, weird favors (kidding), and generous Salt Lake community donors to ensure we exhaust all possible avenues without exhausting you, the pulse of our organization. Yup, YOU are the lifeblood of SLFS and we couldn't be prouder to represent your interests and passion for cinema in the Salt Lake community. We feel pretty good about holding on to that honor.
So, WHY do we need digital projectors?
From our standpoint, it's pretty simple. In the film industry, distributors are phasing out 35mm format and switching to digital technology for one main reason: it's cheaper. Also, it means filmmakers are creating films using the latest and greatest technologies that mean you can experience color, texture, sound, and performances better than ever before! With new digital technology we will have the ability to stream live performances of theatre and opera from all over the world, thus enhancing and diversifying our programming. This is the biggest change to happen to film since the introduction of sound! YOU can be part of cinema history. Yes, really.
What will happen if we don't convert? The same unfortunate fate that will befall any small, independent theatre who can't afford the switch: they go dark. The good news? There are many theatres like SLFS who have successfully raised the funds for their screens. With 7 screens to convert @ Broadway and Tower Theatres, our goal is unique and quite ambitious. And thanks to the support of grants and a few key community members, we're already half way there!
SLFS is a 501(c), what?
As Utah's premier nonprofit - the 501(c)3 part - independent film establishment since 2001, SLFS aims to educate, advocate, and inform about and through cinema, fostering film talent and cultivating film appreciation. Our diverse programs and two full time venues @ Broadway and the historic Tower Theatre keep the potent ideas and voices and film accessible to the entire community. We wrote this mission when we started and continue to champion that within our organization and community so that we can nurture your enthusiasm for cinema with us.
As a nonprofit, we have the support of an engaging Board of Directors who help guide our sustainability while fostering the creative integrity that makes SLFS successful. Box Office and Concessions alone aren't enough to keep us alive (we wish!). Nonprofits have the ability to seek funding from various city, county, state, and federal grants that focus on cultivating the programs that bring free films to over 30,000 Salt Lake area residents (including under-served areas), partner with over 49 educational and nonprofit organizations, and credit over 56 volunteers who help run the day to day operations. Your ticket greeter behind the rope? Volunteer. The chocolate scooper on your waffle at Wassail & Waffles (our annual holiday event)? Volunteer. We love our volunteers!

As part of a larger campaign to raise funds for the Digital Deadline, our Kickstarter campaign aims to support the efforts of our staff and Board since the beginning of this year. We are tirelessly working on grants, loans, partnerships, and receiving the support of passionate film community members to reach our goal of $700,000. Almost half-way there!
With a diverse approach in fundraising, we are well on our way in the transition so that there are little to no interruptions of our programs and screenings of films you love. Our Kickstarter campaign plays one of many roles in beating the Digital Deadline. Your support is part of cinematic history!
Short answer: No. We're going to do EVERYTHING we can to stay alive. Even if it means we transition a few screens at a time. We're determined to make this work over the next year.

Once your pledge is processed on your card, yes. All pledges are tax deductible minus the cost of the Kickstarter reward received. You will receive a tax document with full details with your benefits. Please complete the survey that will be sent at the end of the campaign in order for SLFS to contact you.
