What is a Story Each Day?
A Story Each Day is a collection of 365 short stories that I’m writing, one each day, throughout every day of 2014. A Story Each Day is a narrative experiment, a constant practice, and an exciting journey that I’ve used to help me understand life better.
A story isn't just a nice collection of pretend people, and made up places. A story isn't just a retelling of an old adventure. A story isn't just a fun thing to tell around a campfire, or a relaxing thing to read before you go to bed at night. A story is a dangerous and provoking path, which leads us always to see truth more vividly.
Why did you start A Story Each Day?
When I lived in NYC last year, I met a musician – A violinist. I learned about her experience developing her craft as a musician, and learned that she had practiced every single day for 25 years.
It made me realize: If I want to be really dedicated to something, it should be a part of my life every single day. And one thing I believe to be inarguably true is that good stories help people understand life better. I’ve tried to dedicate myself to this idea by making films and writing, but A Story Each Day was a clear and adamant way for me to commit myself to an ideal that I care about.
I’m doing this campaign because I want you to share in this journey that I’ve taken. Each story is an adventure, or an exploration that is meant to make people think about life. My stories range from comical sketches to dramatic glimpses into the lives of tragic characters. They range from topics of death, love, failure, success, finding home, finding meaning, and exploration.
Who are your influences? What are your stories about?
I'm a huge fan of the short fiction in Italo Calvino's book 'Invisible Cities', and a number of my stories share the imaginative landscape of his blended realities.
Although I hadn’t read much of JD Salinger until I was already halfway through this project, I think that I was also somehow subconsciously or pre-emptively influenced by his work, specifically 'The Catcher in the Rye'. After reading more of his stories, I can see a vein of influence, as the introspective first-person perspective is something that I use in my stories frequently. I’m also a fan of David James Possiant, and a fairly obscure book from the Czech Republic called 'A Medal for Perseverance' by Petr Musilek.
In addition to the more widely known writers, I’m also heavily influenced by a number of friends and collaborators, including Tim Reavis (www.timothyreavis.com) and Josh Bielick (www.joshbielick.com).
Can I read some of your stories before I back your campaign?
Yes, you can! It’s hard to understand the full range of topics and themes in all 365 stories without reading a majority of the stories, but several select stories are available to read during the duration of the campaign: Download an eBook of five of my short stories for free at my NoiseTrade Page!
Can I read some of your stories if I don’t back your campaign?
Yes! With this Kickstarter, I’m publishing hardcover copies of the 365 stories that you can receive in March (as soon as the stories are proofed and printed). However, if you don’t want the whole collection, you can tune in at www.astoryeachday.com and read them in the exact same way that I wrote them: I’ll be publishing one story online each day starting on January 1st, 2015, one year after I wrote them. You can also download an eBook of five of my short stories for free at my NoiseTrade Page!
Why are you doing this campaign? If I support you, where is the money going?
The goal of this Kickstarter is to raise $2,000. This money will go toward the initial print run of getting these 365 stories published as high quality hardcover books. The money will also fund the creation of eBooks (ePub, Mobi, and PDF format), and the purchase of ISBN numbers for these books, so that these stories can be shared and sold in a traditional bookstore setting. Ultimately, this campaign gives me a way to raise the funds and awareness to share these stories with people like you.
A little bit about me:
I’m an award-winning film director and writer whose work has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival, Universal Studios, and the Carolina Theater. I got my start when I won Best Picture and Best Director for my film ‘The Strong One’ at Campus MovieFest, the largest student film festival in the world. After studying screenwriting in Prague, Czech Republic, and working in video production in New York City, I moved back to North Carolina, where I work as the Director of Creative for a startup.
Risks and challenges
I started A Story Each Day on January 1st, 2014, with the intention and goal of writing one story every day, until December 31st, 2014. So far, I’ve been successful, and have written one story every single day of the year. But the year’s not over yet!
I’ve done some pretty crazy things in order to avoid missing a story each day - From writing on scraps of paper in a dark car at 3am, to writing while stranded at a remote warehouse construction site. That being said, I don’t expect to miss any of the remaining days, and the only situation in which I could see myself missing a day would be if I encounter some kind of serious illness.
The books will be printed at a private publishing company that I have printed at before, so I know what to expect in the quality of the product, as well as the delivery and press time.
The stories will be copy edited by myself and a select group of individuals who are pre-reading the stories. As with any content of this volume, there are bound to be mistakes, but rest assured that each and every story will be proof-read, checked, and copy-edited by a small team of people.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
