A Very Dungeon World New Year

Happy holidays everyone!

Just before Christmas we received all 2,000 Dungeon World softcovers—literally a ton of Dungeon World! Here's a photo to give you and idea of the scale and look of the book.

Before you get too excited, we're still waiting on the printed copies of the backer supplements, but those should arrive any day now.

Once the backer supplements arrive we'll start sending softcover orders.

The hardcovers are actually running ahead of schedule! The printer is expecting to send us sample copies on Friday. They'll take a few days to arrive. Then we'll sign off on everything and send final payment. Once that's finished they'll send us the rest of the hardcovers. When the hardcovers arrive we'll have a massive packing party and start sending out DW in earnest.

So what does all this mean? Backers within the US and Canada can expect to see their copies by the end of January! International shipping is a bit harder to predict, but international orders will hit the mail at the same time.

The Barbarian Playtest

While we wait for the books to arrive we've been busy with the barbarian. After a lot of experimentation (some of which you saw in our Google+ posts) we've put together something that we really like, and hopefully you will too!

Download the barbarian character sheet here.

The class still isn't complete. We need to add a few more advanced moves, and we haven't played it as much as we'd like. So, if you play the barbarian, share your thoughts on the forums or the Dungeon World Tavern.

@Jacob: Sorry you were surprised! We went with the format that best fit the game. We wanted something that you could easily carry it around or read it on the bus. We could have gone bigger, but we didn't see how bigger pages would help anyone for this particular game—there aren't big tables that fill a page or complex diagrams. If you're not getting what you expected, please email us directly (gm@dungeon-world.com) and we'll issue a refund.

@Surfmonkey01: See our latest update! We expect the first orders to hit the mail next Wednesday with the bulk of orders mailed after the hardcovers arrive and we have our packing party.

I must say this is very disappointing - I expected a full size softcover, not a small paperback book.

What's the latest ETA on shipping starting? And how can I get myself at the start of the queue? :-)

@Matthew: So far the d6+d8 roll has been a big bonus, and has led to cool new directions in play with pursuing appetites. That said, we're always looking and evaluating—if it doesn't seem to work we'll change it.

@Phil: The problem with the heedless dice we originally posted was that they were fundamentally reactive. The barbarian changed from an active force of change into a damage absorber—anything that made the barbarian best when they deliberately took hits seemed wrong to us. We go into some more detail on our thinking over on G+: https://plus.google.com/117415966179711277938/posts/Sb1ZYFmsHe5

I like the Barbarian, the focus on great hungers is rather cool, but it does seem a bit underpowered compared to most of the other classes, at the moment its main advantage seems to be that much of its class abilites are geared to marking XP as often and quickly as possible, but without any cool advanced moves to spend that XP on there's not a lot of point. Hopefully the advanced moves to be added will sort that out, but cool concept nonetheless. :-)

Re: the barbarian. Did people not like the fiddly rage dice mechanic? I thought that looked really interesting but lost track of the conversation on G+ a few weeks ago.

@Surfmonkey01: We're expecting to have a limited number of hardcovers left over, yes. We'll make them available through some online retailer, but we're not sure who yet. Glad you like it!

      Oops, got cut off...

A question: Will there be any Hardcovers left over? I find myself sorta wishing I'd gone for that as well as the softcover, I see my books getting a LOT of use... Will there be any extra hardcovers for sale?

Holy crap that looks awesome! The end of the month can't get here soon enough!
