Stretch Goal #1: The Portal

Hello intrepid Dungeon World Adventurers! Thanks to you Dungeon World is going to print, but there is still deeper to delve. In fact, there's an entire dungeon to explore and your support will reveal it.

Right now we find ourselves in the first room. There's a mysterious portal here, a weak point between the planes where… something can spill through.

If we reach $25,000 we'll be able to tame the portal and use it to bring across Dark Heart of the Dreamer, a Dungeon World planar adventure by Jonathan Walton. The adventure will be a free PDF to all backers if we meet our goal, delivered at the same time as the finished PDF. Here's some more about the adventure in Jonathan's own words:

"Dark Heart of the Dreamer" is a sandbox-style adventure and setting toolkit torn from the pages of the Planarch Codex, the lost gazetteer of the planes. The monstrous city of Dis is gradually consuming the entire cosmos and now hosts refugees from dozens of destroyed worlds. Can a motley posse of destitute freelancers brave the Ocean of Fire and seize the enormous living treasure their slumbers have revealed? And what will their efforts mean for Dis, its inhabitants, and the city's newest victims? "Dark Heart" points a finger in the direction of epic dangers and then hands you the reins.

Writing and layout by Jonathan Walton with a cover image by the great Jenn Rodgers. Special thanks to Hans Chung-Otterson and Simon Carryer.

We've been blown away by all the support so far. We can't wait to see what the future brings.

Thanks, folks! That was quick. Can't wait to play this with you.

Welp, may as well post the next goal. BOOYAH!

If an additional full class/LE playbook is one of the stretch goals being contemplated, will there be a backer poll to determine which one? Druid vs. Barbarian poll could be fun.

@Scott I'll see if I can convince Sage + Adam to release it early to backers if it's done before the Kickstarter is, which looks likely.

@Ryan: What can I say, it's a pretty dangerous dungeon!

We really didn't anticipate this response and by the time everything slowed down enough that we could post our goals we were well past 500%. We're investigating other ways we can make use of the scale we're at now, like putting more things in print or adding color to the interior pages. Stay tuned!

It seems kind of weird that your goal would be $4000, and the first stretch goal is set at over 600% funding. Shouldn't we have the dungeon almost explored by now?

    7. Sage Kobold Productions Creator on June 5, 2012

@Paul: Of course! There's more dungeon just beyond those doors...

You do realize you're just going to barrel right through this stretch goal, right? :) Hope you're planning some more further out!

Fair enough. Looking forward to seeing it.

Yes, definitely, but probably not in the way you expect! The Planarch Codex introduces an entirely new set of "heritage moves" that reflect the diverse cultural and ethnic background of PCs among the planes. In the first playtest, I played a marsh-dwarf paladin with some spiderlord ancestry. These build on the existing monster moves, based on the premise that everyone is a monster to somebody else. On the classes side, I'm still nailing down the final details -- and we'll see how playtesting goes -- but there will likely be a set of plug-and-play options for adapting the basic classes to reflect life among the planes. So not new stuff as much as a different perspective on what already exists in Dungeon World.

Will there be any custom planar classes, races, etc?

Putting finishing touches on this bad boy right now and can't wait to share it with all the Dungeon World backers! I'm also 100% committed to really putting this adventure/supplement through its paces -- running it extensively for local groups and at a bunch of upcoming summer conventions -- and polishing it to a brilliant sheen with assistance and feedback from DW players. It will be solid and playable from the get-go, but also open to future refinements and expansions. Let's go planar delving together and see what crazy things we find!

We totally forgot to credit the map we're exploring! The Stretch Goal Dungeon is by Tony Dowler, our map artist and the originator of the Dungeon World idea. If you like his work you can get a custom map from him as one of our top rewards.

Thanks, Jeremiah - Sage gets all the credit for this one!

This is probably the coolest way to do stretch goals I've ever seen.
