A Remnant of Magic | A Fairytale Anthology of Old Lady Heroes
Wise woman. Witch.
Evil Stepmother. Crone.
In the pages of the fairy tales we grew up with, older women are often relegated to side characters. They are wise and gentle or sinister and cunning, but never do they break into the spotlight. They offer a supportive role for (or attempt to thwart the efforts of) the young hero or heroine, and no more.
Or so it used to be.
A Remnant of Magic will be an anthology of flipped fairy tales featuring older women as the lead heroines. Full of their own lives, their own histories, their own futures–these women will be strong, brave, compassionate, and full of magic and mystery.
A Remnant of Magic will be filled with both retellings of existing fairy tales and stories creating their own. Featuring all sorts of settings and plots, both familiar and unanticipated.
And each story will be accompanied by a magical piece of artwork! The anthology will contain these custom illustrations with their stories in black and white, and a special artbook will be created filled the full-color prints!
Who was Snow White years and years after the story takes place? Who was the dragon, if not an old woman inside? Who comes to the rescue of kingdoms when all the children and their romantic ways can't do it all? Or wins much smaller, personal wars in a world of magic?
A kingdom will turn to those with wisdom and knowledge for the ages. Old warriors will lead the charge when war comes. Witches, grandmothers, and mages will guide families through struggles that span the width of continents and the warmth of homes.
When we read such unusual tales, we uncover storylines we never thought we’d read, and hear from voices that are so often quiet in the world of fantasy.
They are imbued with a special type of magic.
Who Am I?
Hi all! I'm Emily McCosh, graphic design student and obsessed story-writer. My fiction has been published at Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Shimmer, Galaxy's Edge, and Flash Fiction Online, among other publications. Check out my fiction at oceansinthesky.com.
As an artist and designer, I love bringing ideas to life, especially when it comes to stories. I'll be illustrating a piece to go with each of the fine tales in A Remnant of Magic, as well as the cover art. (Stretch goals bring the possibility of another artist as well!) Check out my design site for all my work, or take a look below for some selected pieces.
Once we've funded, there will be an open submission period! I'll be looking for lovely, shimmery, fairy-tale-esque stories featuring older women full of strength, compassion, and magic.
These fairy tales will range from the Grimm Bothers and Hans Christian Andersen inspired stories to tales from all over the world. From ones we know to those brand new and original. Fairytales from the woods, the desert, the oceans, the skies, and everything in between.
Stories will be up to 5,000 words in length, and the anthology will contain approximately 15 of them. I'm so excited for submissions to open and the stories to flood in!
Check back here for submission guidelines once we've funded!
STRETCH GOAL #1: At $800 over the goal, I'll be commissioning the wonderful and talented Lily Ann Hernandez to do three of the custom pieces of art for the interior of the anthology!
Check out her portfolio and see some of her selected pieces below!
STRETCH GOAL #2: After that, any extra funds raised will go toward the option to create the audiobook for A Remnant of Magic! Everyone at the ebook level and above will get a copy of this audiobook, and I'm super excited for the opportunity to reach this stretch goal!
Here's a quick breakdown of what the funds will be going toward:
- Paying the authors a professional rate of $0.08 a word is the most important!
- The copies of both the anthology and art book will be printed and distributed by IngramSpark (hardback copies!)
- Contributor and backer copies
- Formatting and design
- Kickstarter fees
- Copyrighting, ISBNs, and other publishing fees
- If the Kickstarter gains far more backers than expected, a fulfillment service!

Risks and challenges
Since I'm a one-woman operation (and a full-time student!), the main challenge will be fulfilling everything on my own. But I've given myself plenty of time to put the anthology together and get it into the hands of backers and contributors.
Other risks and challenges include problems with printing and shipping since this is my first time using IngramSpark, but they're a professional service and I'm confident in their abilities.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
