Each year, we welcome hundreds, even a thousand or more Special Needs Heroes to Kilgore for free activities specially-crafted for them. We need your help -- we need you to #BeAHero -- to help us raise funds that we can use to continue reaching out to and serving these awesome individuals, and we hope you'll also help us tell the incredible stories of these everyday heroes through a professionally-made, feature-length documentary.
Kilgore Fire Department launched its Special Abilities Family Fun Event in September 2012, choosing the third Saturday of the month for a festival custom-tailored for children and adults with special needs, for their families, for the caregivers and for their supporters. Through the support of local donors, all activities at the one-day celebration are free, and all are welcome.
Spearheaded by local firefighters and bolstered by community volunteers, the success of 2012's kick-off spawned a second annual event on the third weekend of September 2013 and a third observance on Sept. 20, 2014.
Seeing firsthand the joy and gratitude of their guests the previous three years, touched by their smiles and stories, as SAFFE Day's organizers headed into the fourth annual event of September 2015 it was with an expanded vision for the outreach, to champion the Special Needs Heroes who lead wonderfully normal lives made more colorful by their special abilities.
Successfully applying for nonprofit status as a 501(c)3, the event's volunteer planning committee dedicated primary fundraising to its essential 2015 activities -- a two-day festival -- and also recruited Overton Films to produce a documentary-short on the event, one that could be used to spread the word about SAFFE Day and encourage people across the state, country and world to help raise funds for coming events and ensure SAFFE Day's future.
It quickly became apparent, there was too much story to tell in a short film, and SAFFE Day is reaching out to the Kickstarter community to #BeAHero and take an active role...
1) Our first priority, always, is to make the Special Abilities Family Fun Event happen, again and again, and the first $20,000 of our goal will be set aside and dedicated to SAFFE Day 2016.
2) The remaining funding, we estimate about $50,000 after Kickstarter expenses, will be utilized in finishing the SAFFE Day documentary as a feature-length film that can be submitted to film festivals around the world, telling the story of the Special Needs Heroes and their families who bring incredible meaning to this event and carrying with the film the core fundraising message to raise revenue for SAFFE 2017, 2018, 2019 ... and beyond.
Help Tell the Story
SAFFE Day's unpaid planners have entrusted the telling of the event's story to Overton Films. The Kilgore based production company's first feature documentary film, "Sweethearts of the Gridiron," has screened in 16 festivals domestically and internationally, and has garnered 11 awards. Overton Films is currently in digital distribution talks for "Sweethearts of the Gridiron," in hopes of making the film available to the public in 2016.
According to the filmmakers, "We are excited to continue the story of SAFFE Day. More so, we're honored the Kilgore Fire Department and City of Kilgore asked Overton Films to be a part of SAFFE Day. The event is truly unique and most beneficial to our community."
When You Give
Our rewards are a mix of SAFFE Day memorabilia and valuable space in the documentary. We hope they will do justice to all the help you're able to give, and we're grateful for your contribution.
Working on SAFFE Day each year, we have been truly touched by the special needs guests who attend, by the gratitude of their family members. We're awed by the commitment of their caregivers. We hope to continue to support them in any way that we can, and we hope that you will help us.
- Please, give as you are able, and share the opportunity as often as you can. Help tell others how to #BeAHero!
- Whether it's $10, $25, $100 or $10,000 you will be making great things happen for children and adults with special needs.
- If you tell 5 friends or 500, each one may bring us closer to reaching our goal: being champions for Everyday Heroes.
Spread the Word
When you give, please take a moment to snap a picture of yourself with a sign bearing the #BeAHero and/or the #SAFFEday hashtags. Or, take a moment to shoot a short video, tell people "I'm a hero!" and encourage them to do the same. Tag @SAFFEday so we can collect our backers' shout-outs!
Risks and challenges
Like any Kickstarter project, our primary challenge is getting the word out. Once that happens, though, we're confident the generous crowdfunding community will see the value of becoming a part of the Special Abilities Family Fun Event.
When it comes to our merchandise, several of our rewards are already tried, tested and true, ready for a second round of production and rapid mailing to our supporters.
On the documentary, Overton Films has already seen Kickstarter success in its production of "Sweethearts of the Gridiron," and the company has worked hard to satisfy its supporters. Working with the filmmakers, we're confident the final product will not only be inspiring, it will be a springboard for further support for SAFFE Day. With the rampant success of "Sweethearts of the Gridiron," we're confidently this talented crew can effectively, respectfully and exuberantly tell the stories of our Special Needs Heroes, and we look forward to sharing those stories with the world through film festivals and mass distribution.
Please, help us tell the story. Help us ensure that SAFFE Day 2016 is a reality for our Everyday Heroes. We looking forward to changing lives with you.
If you have any more questions, we're eager to answer them.
