NEW MESSAGE FROM BRITTNEY POWELL FROM THE SET!
Our current goal is to raise $10,000 or more as first money in towards the total budget of $250,000 for the full feature film starring Brittney Powell. Thomas Konkle, David Beeler and an incredible cast including actors from the noir world.
Private Detective Roland Drake has fallen on hard times in a harsh world. Drake is being evicted from his office and disgraced by a missing persons case, which has ruined him in the public eye and with police officials. It seems like it’s all over for him. Then, redemption walks in… with curves. The owner of those curves is a sexy, dark haired beauty named Katherine Montemar. She wants his help. The chemistry is immediate and her concern for the disappearance of her family members pulls him into her case… and into bed.
He wakes up to her missing too, and a pool of blood where she used to be. After a nervous encounter with his one-time partner in investigations, the equally skilled but unscrupulous Lew MacDonald, he is confronted by Katherine’s blonde sister, Jennifer, who knows more than she should about everything and blackmails him into helping her.
They both have secrets from each other and the world, but their destiny becomes entwined in the dark descent into her universe, which is violently coming apart. This leads them on a hunt for a priceless gem and into world peeled back to revel a twisted family and the immoral underbelly of human nature.
Dogged by the corrupt police in the form of Detective Powell and by a dangerously interested Lew MacDonald, Drake must navigate a sinister world of lies, betrayal, and murder with the menagerie of seedy characters that appear in Jennifer’s life. Jennifer and Drake’s real passion turns to love and their super-charged sexuality clouds everything. The lust of the golden haired good girl and the cynical, but desperate, detective bonds them intensely during the nightmarish experience of slipping deeper and deeper into their doomed love story. Even Drake might not be able to tell right from wrong anymore at the shocking conclusion, which could destroy him, Jennifer, and bury all the mysteries forever.
STAR AND FILM PRODUCER DAVID BEELER
Yes, that seems like a big number, but with YOUR help we can do it and have it released to you FIRST, then the public.
We have a deep and abiding passion for the genre of film noir. The striking visual style is immediately identifiable and evocative. It’s gritty, dark and sexy -- it focuses on the shadow side of humanity. Noir is about people sucked into situations beyond their control by their own passions. Everyone who’s fallen for someone who is “bad news” understands the lure and danger of noir.
And so, we are thrilled to be creating a new feature length thriller in the classic vein of black & white noir, Trouble Is My Business.
"TROUBLE" is the noir tale of a private investigator, Roland Drake, down on his luck who becomes dangerously intertwined with an enigmatic woman. He was a working man, missing persons was his specialty... She was from a world of wealth with twisted family roots, and murder.
Two and a half months ago, we ran a successful Kickstarter campaign and not only met, but exceeded our fundraising goal. (Our sincere thanks to all who contributed!)
The goal for that campaign was to generate funds to shoot the opening scenes of our film. A private investor matched what we raised on Kickstarter and, with the help of a professional crew who believed in the project sufficiently to defer their salaries, we shot the opening of the movie on RED Scarlet cameras. We have made good on the promise of that campaign.
We also own the visual effects company Lumen Actus so we can build the world on the 1940's. Here's a show reel:
See an exclusive viewing of the opening of the film during this campaign now. And, we'll be posting a new video a week with messages from Brittney, Dave, PJ Gaynard, our DP, and behind-the-scenes footage.
Help Make Trouble
So, we have the opening of a movie. Obviously, we're raising capital to pay for the entire film.
Now, $250K sounds like a lot of money, but in the world of feature films, this is a very modest budget, indeed. By raising funds here, we are not only generating money needed to produce the rest of the picture, we are creating a compelling argument that there is an audience who wants to see not only film noir, but our particular story as well. People voting with their wallets is the type of endorsement that speaks loudly with film distributors and financiers.
A Classic Noir Actress
We are very excited with the prospect of YOU helping us hire a famous actress from the “age of noir” to play Mrs. Evelyn Montemar. Imagine Lauren Bacall or Catherine Deneuve returning to the noir genre in a new role that has echoes of Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard.
For the role of Detective Barry Tate, we have an APB out on the following actors, (and you can help make it possible to cast them):
The Film Stars
BRITTNEY POWELL has been in everything from cult favorite "AIRBORNE," with Seth Green and Jack Black, to "GENERAL HOSPITAL" to "XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS."
THOMAS KONKLE (aka Tom Konkle) has appeared in HBO's series "LUCK" with Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte, "THE ART OF FOOTBALL" with John Cleese, "COMMUNITY," "THE GAME," "TARTARUS" "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT" and a ton of commercials. His directing work stretches the media gamut from film to music videos.
"I've been a film and television director for 20 years," says Konkle. "My stylized images and ability to communicate to actors, while really understanding the technical parts of the filmmaking, can draw out great performances and storytelling."
DAVID BEELER - classically trained award winning screen and stage actor with many series, films, new media and theater credits to his name. David is the long time collaborator with Konkle on Dave and Tom comedy projects, films, scripts, radio, web, and television productions. They have been a performing team and double act for 11 years.
Konkle and Powell wrote this original feature script together and are starring in the lead roles.
There are incentives and swag for your support, all listed in the sidebar to the right. Anything from a dollar to pre-ordering the film, to becoming a full-fledged investor (please contact us for info) will be very much appreciated because the full motion picture is going to happen this year.
Where does the money go?
All of the money raised will go towards the material costs of making the film: equipment rentals, catering, transportation, sets, locations, costumes, make-up, lighting, power, editing, music, cast & crew salaries. (Both cast & crew deferred their salaries to create the first 15 minutes of the film as proof of concept. We will be using the same crew as they rocked the house, or, to keep it true to the noir period, they jazzed the house.)
What will happen to the money I donate if you don't reach your goal of $10,000?
The rules of Kickstarter are that we reach our goal, or all pledged money reverts to the backers and we get: Nothing, nada, zip. $0.00. That is why it is all contributions, no matter how small are important. There is a saying, "Many streams lead to mighty rivers." If enough people help us with even small amounts, we will reach, and hope to exceed our goal.
What if you raise more than $10,000?
Vegas Baby! No. Our budget is $250,000 and anything over our goal of $10k, as first money in, can only help. The closer we get to the needed $250k, the easier it will be to raise the difference via traditional means. We pledge that all funds will go into making Trouble Is My Business a better movie.
OK, but what if…. You raise 10k, but not $250k?
Our Production Company, Lumen Actus, is building relationships with sales agents, other producers, managers and financiers. These relationships will help pave the way for Trouble to reach its full budget, go into full production, and be released. The question then, is not whether it will get made, but in what time-frame. We would love to have it fully completed by the end of this year.
What if I want to contribute, but don't want the perk that's offered?
No problem; when you contribute, there's an option you can select to donate without receiving a perk in return.
I can't contribute financially, but I still want to help. What can I do?
If you want to help, but are unable to assist us financially, there are many ways you might help: spread the word -- post it on FaceBook, like it on FaceBook, Tweet about it, email it to friends. (We've placed all of these options on the sidebar to the right of each page of our website to make it easy for you.) Perhaps someone you know is a huge fan of noir films and would be very excited about our film, perhaps someone you know could offer services that a film needs -- anything from catering, to equipment to dry-cleaning. Let us know, and we'll tell you if it is useful. Enthusiastically spreading the word about what we're doing is one of the greatest helps.
Your support and belief is encouraging and motivating. And we hope that our passion for storytelling and noir will entertain and enrich you and countless others as our film finds its audience.
