Hi! My name is Joe Sackett and I’m a filmmaker. In May, I directed my first feature film. It's an expansion of a short film I made called I Was In Your Blood. That short played at a number of festivals and was selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick. You can check it out here! Now, we are raising money to carry the feature version through post-production and across the finish line.
The movie’s working title, like the short, is I Was In Your Blood. It’s about a little boy named Johnny who gets to live as a woman for a day when he sends his spirit into his babysitter’s body. It’s a genderqueer, Being John Malkovich-y body-transfer fantasy. The premise is whimsical, but the story comes from a very personal place. As a little kid, I loved all things feminine: lipstick, dresses, dolls – and my babysitters. In many ways, this movie is a wish-fulfillment fantasy made in honor of my younger self.
A lot of amazing people came together to make this movie. I was especially happy that my lead actors from the short were able to come back to make the feature. Colby Minifie, our lead actress, filmed with us between shooting the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and the new seasons of The Walking Dead and Amazon's The Boys. Tre Ryder, who plays Johnny, recently finished filming After The Wedding with Julianne Moore.
We have a fantastic team of post-production collaborators lined up to help us finish the film. Not only will your contribution support queer independent cinema, it will also help to pay our talented group of editors, animators, musicians, and sound engineers.
Risks and challenges
We hope to premiere this film next year. With an eye on that goal, we are currently working towards the major 2020 film festival deadlines, which begin in September. There is a lot to do between now and then. We need to cut the film, incorporate the animated sequences, write the score, record the voice-overs, design the soundscape, mix the audio—the list goes on! Having the necessary funds available to pay our collaborators in a timely fashion will help us keep our post-production timeline on track.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
