About

Space to Breathe, working with Proost (our arts label) aims to deliver wellbeing and mental health support using the arts, spirituality and creativity across UK Festivals this summer.

Any great festival has the potential to lift the soul, release potential and create incredible change.  Yet in a country where 1 in 4 people suffering from some sort of mental health challenge there is also a need to provide support and wellbeing in thew high-octane environments of celebration and experience.

That's why we have created this Kickstarter to embrace the opportunities to we have to serve at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and at Greenbelt Festival.  We then aim to deliver a free downloadable wellbeing resource  - suitable for any festival but specifically delivered at Sheffield's Tramlines Festival.

Finally we want to create book called Festival which looks at the subject of celebration and includes content contributed by people such as Richard Passmore, Beth Keith and Lucie Shuker, Rebecca Dean, Martin Daws and Talitha Fraser, Emily Garces, Lucy Freeman and others.

  • At Edinburgh we've been asked to spend a week supporting volunteers and artists with 1-2-1 Mental Health First Aid (see left), with use a creative arts project in order to learn more about wellbeing issues at the Festival.  We'll be there from 12-16 August at Fringe Central including 'Black Wednesday' - the middle day of the Festival which has been a crisis point during the festivals history.  We are also going to spending time specifically with some artists to explore further the connections between art, performance and mental health and hope to make this a long-term relationship with this wonderful festival.
  • At Greenbelt we are helping to run a wellbeing venue and to provide some programming around the themes of spirituality and wellbeing. Expect creative spirituality ideas, mixed with meditations and ambient music.  There will also be a massive focus on the creative arts in the venue and content.  We are also planning to collaborate with Proost artists to create installations around the site.   On the Saturday night our well-received Proost Presents will return with Jonny Baker involved as we'll look at 'Roadside Stories' with a free resource to come too.
  • Then at Tramlines (with scope for other festivals too) we want to make available a downloadable Wellbeing resource for festival go-ers - available online and easy to use.  We'd like this to be a resource which as a template could be used by other groups supporting other festivals.

Our approach to this work is to use the arts and spirituality as a way to unlock conversations about wellbeing and to do this we are working with writers, poets, artists and coaches to create Festival - a new book aimed to be launched this summer which will discuss the concept of celebration in a number of artistic forms.

Festival is being launched at the end of August but supporters of this Kickstarter would get the book with free shipping.  The book is being created as we speak but we already have a cover design (below) and content from celebrated writers such as Richard Passmore, Beth Keith and Lucie Shuker - from poets like Rebecca Dean and Talitha Fraser - from coaches like Tim Lea - and from artists like Emily Garces and Lucy Freeman.

We are very excited about this unique Kickstarter and hope you'll be able to support it.

Risks and challenges

We are booked into work in the two festivals in some capacity so this Kickstarter is about maximimising those opportunities. The risks to the project are finances (raising enough money to deliver what we'd like to), the weather (sunshine really helps) and most importantly spreading the word so that people make use of what we're doing.
To mitigate these risks we've developed plans dependent on what we raise and have worked hard on publicity and communications planning.
Sadly the weather is out of our hands but all work will have wet weather alternatives.
