About this project

Why are we making this book?  Text by Morten Halborg-Møller, Limited Works

People close to the the Danish artist Michael Rytz know him as dedicated and very productive. But much of his time is spent making works that were never intended for the public eye. Since 2009 Rytz has devoted himself to the creation and elaboration of a series of private books incorporating many hundreds of intricately decorated and painted pages. To call them sketchbooks would be insufficient - in form they are more like the illuminated manuscripts of the medieval era. In content they are a richly bejewelled cavalcade of comic figures, scenes and profane geometries.

I heard about the mystical sketchbooks many years before I got a chance to see them with my own eyes. when I did I couldn’t believe what I had stumbled upon. A universe all of its own, so crazy, so detailed and personal. After that day I couldn’t stop thinking about Rytz’ books and I knew I was lucky to be amongst the few who had actually seen them close hand.

I wanted the world to see what I had seen. It couldn’t be some sort of trivial presentation - art like this deserves to be presented in the best possible way. Therefore, I joined forces with award winning book designer Jacob Birch and award winning photographer and publisher Jon Nordstrøm. My goal was to document every page of the books in the most exacting way, to give the viewer the very next best thing to holding them in their own hands. I also asked fellow artists, collectors and people close Rytz to contribute with essays about him and his art. These short texts accompany the drawings to give the reader a deeper understanding of Rytz and his complex and fascinating universe.

The rich, bizarre and fragmentary work of Rytz  - Text by Jody Barton

Michael Rytz is without doubt a genuine and unique artist. And he is not just that. He is an odd and marvelously impossible creation no less strange than his labyrinthine, jewelled and frenetic work. It's really hard to say where Michael the person ends and where his drawings and paintings begin.

I think in a way, if Michael has a problem, it is that he is too much the genuine article in a dismal forest of professional posturers, social climbers and jet-set 'outsider' artists who are more concerned with selling and being sold than anything else. We may have forgotten that art can be a personal thing from an actual person.

And the work! Oh my goodness, the sketchbooks - and you shouldn’t call them that - are rich, bizarre, fragmentary and practically rotting with detail and patina - the illuminated manuscripts of a mind most strangely illuminated. It's a shock to actually be able to see them for real, so out of the ordinary is the true solid quality of them. It's hard to believe that they are from the present moment as they could convincingly be from some other lost decade of the last century. But they aren't exactly retro, more that they have that feeling of being the very best artifacts from another era lost. So much of what we think of as art now, even in the still figurative illustration and graphic arts has far too tight a relationship to commerce and the production of assets.

There is no doubt that Michaels work has value, but I think that the most valuable and most unfashionable thing about it is also the best: it resists both classification and fragmentation. It is a whole, and unto itself. That is why his painted books are the most definitive of his works. They resist reduction. Each page relates to the next both thematically and literally. Both sides of each paper often contain a masterwork - leaving the book as utterly one complete piece. This is not the act of a man with his eye on the bottom line, but instead with his eye firmly on the devotion to his internal world and it’s indivisibility.

What is the current stage of the project?

We are ready to start the book production as soon as the Kickstarter campaign finishes in April 2017. Production and delivery will take approximately 8 weeks.

Why do we need money?

We have spent the last year creating this book. What we need now are the funds for the production run at the printing house, packaging, print editions and marketing.

Rewards

We will ship out a signed book to your address before it hits the shops and you'll get a special reduced kickstarter price. But there are many levels of award for supporting this project - please take some time to look at them as many are unique items, prints and original artworks worth far more than the pledge requested.

Risks and challenges

We have been working hard on this book for quite some time to make sure that we are definitely ready for production as soon as the Kickstarter campaign finishes. We are also aware of all the steps in the process and what can possibly cause delays and will do our best to keep to our schedule and keep you updated on any delays or problems in the process.
