About

The Proxmark Pro 

The Proxmark Pro aims to solve some of the existing problems that prevent the Proxmark3 from easily being used without a PC. The Proxmark Pro will feature an LCD character display, more powerful FPGA (5x), simple navigation switch, lithium ion on-board battery, buzzer and MicroSD card slot. Most importantly, the Proxmark Pro will be completely operable with one hand. The big promise of the Proxmark Pro is completely untethered operation. 

The "Proxmark Pro Kit" reward package will include everything needed to get started. This includes: 

  • An enclosed Proxmark Pro that is programmed and tested 
  • Tested HF and LF antennas 
  • Tag bundle for testing 
  • Carrying case 
  • USB cable 

Backers will need to purchase a battery separately.

True Standalone Mode (Untethered)

In order to operate the Proxmark3 without a PC, users must connect an external battery pack and place the device in a special operating mode (“standalone mode”) by holding the button. Standalone mode lacks flexibility because the type of tag to read or emulate must be specified when the firmware is compiled. For example, there is no way to switch between HF and LF tag types in the field. The interface to Standalone mode is also awkward because output must be represented using the 4 LEDs on-board. Meanwhile, the only form of control is a single push button. 

The Proxmark Pro aims to solve these problems by introducing a small but adequate character LCD, a navigation switch, support for an on-board battery, and a buzzer for audible event notification. Additionally, the new antenna connection will not require users to have the antenna connected via a cable. This means that the Proxmark Pro will take the form of a single rigid body that can be wielded effectively with one hand.

Powerful FPGA 

The Proxmark3 is equipped with a Spartan II FPGA. The current bitstream no longer fits on the existing FPGA. The Proxmark3 development community addressed this problem by splitting the FPGA image into two halves based on whether LF or HF operations were needed. When an LF operation is needed, the LF bitstream is loaded before the operation is performed. 

The Proxmark Pro will feature an FPGA with 5 times the logic cells of the Proxmark3 and will alleviate having to switch between HF and LF bit streams during operation.

MicroSD Card Slot 

The MicroSD Card slot will open up a host of new possibilities and is a great complement to the improvements related to untethered operation. These possibilities include booting from SD card, storing tag profiles, and logging raw data.

Open Source 

The Proxmark3 is open source hardware and we’d like to keep it that way. The Proxmark Pro hardware and software will be released as open source projects upon successful funding and completion of the Kickstarter project.

Quality 

The Proxmark Pro will be made in the USA. Units will be programmed, thoroughly tested and assembled in the US with care and attention to detail. Rysc Corp will continue providing the excellent level of service & support that customers have grown accustomed to.

History 

The Proxmark Pro represents an evolution of the Proxmark3. The Proxmark3 is a powerful general purpose RFID test instrument originally designed by Jonathan Westhues to snoop, listen and emulate everything from Low Frequency (125kHz) to High Frequency (13.56MHz) tags. These powerful capabilities can be used to perform research and testing of existing proximity technologies as well as prototype new ones. 

The Proxmark is the only research and development platform targeting NFC and RFID that is capable of both transmitting and receiving while meeting the timing requirements of most proximity protocols. The Proxmark also provides full control over the radio layer in addition to software support for several higher-level protocols (ex. Mifare). 

The LF Antenna enables communication with tags that operate at 125kHz and 134kHz (including HID Prox II, HITAG, and EM4100). The HF Antenna enables communication with tags operating at 13.56Mhz (including Mifare Classic/Ultralight, Mifare 1K, Mifare 4K, Mifare Desfire EV1 4K, and iClass).

Here is a sample of the Proxmark3 in action being used to identify unknown tags. 

The Proxmark has also proven itself to be an invaluable tool within the research community. Here are some examples of how the Proxmark has been used to perform research:

Project Plan

Schedule 

Rysc Corp plans to perform hardware development and prototyping in parallel with software development. There are several hardware and corresponding software changes that need to be made in order to meet the new requirements described above. Many of the tasks that need to be performed have already begun, such as hardware development and prototyping. Most of the hardware development is already complete but antennas will need to be re-tuned at the very least.

Most of the remaining development work will be software focussed. The existing code base will need to be ported to the new hardware platform. This includes both ARM and FPGA code. Once the port is stable, development will shift to Untethered mode. This will involve creating menus and interfaces that invoke existing functions, collect results, and display them on-screen.

Once the hardware design is finalized, enclosure prototyping will begin. This will be followed by production runs of both PCB assemblies and enclosures. The final stages will involve programming boards with firmware, testing boards for defects, assembling, packaging, and finally shipping finished products to our backers.

We have prepared a detailed schedule based on initial assumptions. The total time from start to finish will be approximately 17 weeks. Rewards should begin shipping September 26, 2016 and all rewards should be shipped by October 10, 2016.

 Budget 

Rysc Corp has prepared the budget below based on a combination of past experience and current inquiries made into our manufacturing contacts. Note that all rewards destined for locations within the USA include shipping. International orders will be assessed an additional charge of $25.

 

Risks and challenges

Rysc Corp has been involved in the design and manufacture of hardware devices since 2009. We have a great deal of experience managing the entire manufacturing process and believe this project presents little overall risk.

The greatest risk facing the project is receiving more backers than expected and not being able to deliver against the schedule presented above. In this case, we will update backers with a revised schedule when enough information is available.
