About

Phones. They're a part of our everyday lives. Almost everyone uses their phones every day. Whether it's to text someone about meeting somewhere, calling in sick to work, sharing images over social media, or just lying on the couch watching YouTube, phones keep us entertained while making multiple aspects of our lives easier. But have you ever taken a moment to pause and wonder how the phone was created? How it works, with each little component interacts with other components?

Meet the Phone by Mako. It's a simple, do it yourself phone that teaches you how cellphones work. It comes in a premium, hand-crafted wooden box, with a hand-crafted wooden housing. The phone is powered by the Adafruit Feather FONA, which is an Arduino with a cellular card. The kit also includes a keypad to type in phone numbers, and a 2000mAh battery to last a good long while.

Our mission is to teach people how everyday electronics work by having them build their own version of a device. In the kit, people learn how phones work, how keypads work, and how to code in the Arduino programming language.

We are raising funds to buy a laser engraver/cutter for the housing and box pieces. Some  of the money will go towards the laser, while the other will go to ordering parts. We then plan to set up work in a large garage. We will set up a laser engraver to work on cutting out the case pieces, while we put together some of the parts and ready the kits for distribution.

Currently, we are still testing the fit and feel of all of the components. However, most of our prototyping is finished, which means we may be able to start production soon. For the first fifty backers that pledge $130 or more, they will receive an early version of the Phone by Mako, which is estimated to ship in October of 2019. For regular customers, the phone will be available to order around December. However, since all kits are crafted by hand, supplies will be limited and may sell out quickly.

Who are we? Our company, Mako Software, is managed and run by Collin Wentzien, a passionate 13-year-old maker who built and coded this phone. He wanted to make this kit to show people that it isn't difficult to make everyday electronic devices. Ryland Goldman, another 13-year-old, is COO and is managing the Kickstarter and other products. He specializes in software and codes in over 8 coding languages.

Credits to Bob Murphy (http://thisoldgeek.blogspot.com) for writing the base of the code, but the code was modified by us to be simpler and more intuitive to use.

Risks and challenges

The main challenge in starting this project is gathering the necessary materials and machines. We hope to put most of the money raised toward a laser engraver, which will be used to make the phone housing and box.
