We are thrilled to have just added this wonderful screen-printed artwork by artist Chris Bilheimer. You may recognize Chris's work from his iconic album covers for bands such as R.E.M. and Green Day or his beautifully artistic posters for films like Compliance and Prince Avalanche. More about Chris on our update page.
We've priced this incentive at only $85! This includes tubing the 13" x 24" 100lb cover stock print and shipping it to your door. We are limiting this incentive to the first 95 contributors so get them fast!
Thank you for your interest in Folk Hero & Funny Guy. It has always been a dream of mine to direct feature films and with your help we are making this a reality. I've put together an amazing team that includes producer Ryland Aldrich, lifelong friend and incredible musician Adam Ezra, all-star cinematographer Nancy Schreiber, the beautiful and talented Liza Oppenheimer, and the brilliantly hilarious Alex Karpovsky. We couldn't be more excited to get going on the film and now all we need is you! Read below for more on the film and let’s make a movie together! - Jeff
Folk Hero & Funny Guy follows Paul and Jason, childhood friends who have drifted apart as they've reached their 30s. Jason is a good-looking and free spirited singer-songwriter whose career is taking off, while Paul is a struggling stand-up comedian whose once promising trajectory is now in decline. They reunite when Jason passes through town on his most recent tour. A night of drinking leads Jason to offer Paul the opportunity to serve as the opening act for his upcoming solo tour. What Paul doesn’t know is that Jason has booked the tour himself in order to win back an old flame. Paul’s woes are the ideal opportunity for Jason to get his number one wingman back on board.
The film takes place along the eastern seaboard as Paul and Jason drive from gig to gig. We plan to shoot next winter (pray for good weather) beginning in Boston and making our way to Virginia. We are keeping the crew very lean and the shoot short. Our goal is to get every last possible cent onto the screen.
Your money will be crucial seed money that will form the foundation of our production. While we can't make the entire film for $48,500, we can fund the film all the way up to production and assure subsequent equity investors that we can get the project up and running. Here is a breakdown of what your contribution will make possible:
A big part of this Kickstarter campaign is connecting with you. Not only is Kickstarter a great tool for fundraising, it’s an amazing platform for finding our audience before we’ve even made the movie -- and keeping you informed throughout. Even if you can’t fork over a ton of dough, just a buck or two shows your support and let’s us know that you’ll be on board when the film comes out in the future. Jeff Grace is a comedian, writer, and director who started his career on the stages of Second City and ImprovOlympic in Chicago. He was hired to write political rants for IFC’s Henry Rollins Show after a producer saw Jeff perform stand-up at The Improv in Hollywood. From there, he went on to write and act in MTV’s That Movie Show and Comedy Central’s Atom TV. As a founding member of comedy troupe The Vacationeers, Jeff has written and directed several viral internet videos, the most popular of which, Google Maps, generated six million views, was featured on CNN, and led to Google hiring Jeff to create video content.
As a filmmaker, Jeff produced and starred in two independent feature films that secured theatrical distribution after widespread festival runs. The Scenesters won the 2010 Slamdance “Rosebud Award.” It’s A Disaster, which also stars David Cross, America Ferrera and Julia Stiles, debuted in theaters in April 2013 through distributor Oscilloscope and was the #1 independent film on iTunes in June. With a screenplay written by himself, Folk Hero & Funny Guy will be Jeff’s directorial debut.
Alex Karpovsky is perhaps best known for his lead role as Ray in the Emmy Nominated HBO comedy series Girls. Alex has also directed five of his own feature films including 2012’s Red Flag, 2008’s Woodpecker, and 2006’s The Hole Story which prompted Filmmaker Magazine to call him one of the “25 new faces of independent film.” Alex can also be seen in such films as Tiny Furniture (dir: Lena Dunham), Sleepwalk With Me (dir: Mike Birbiglia), and Inside Llewyn Davis (dir: Joel & Ethan Coen).
Liza Oppenheimer is an actress and singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles. She has performed with Jerry Harrison of The Talking Heads, was Sunset Strip’s Spotlight Artist in April 2013 and Chris Martin of Spin called her a “new fave.” As an actress, Liza trained at the prestigious America Academy of Dramatic Arts and starred in the film Good Grief opposite Charlie McDermott (ABC’s The Middle).
Adam Ezra is a touring singer/songwriter who has appeared with such bands as Aerosmith, Goo Goo Dolls, Jason Mraz, Modest Mouse, Blackalicious, Spearhead, and Pete Seeger. His band The Adam Ezra Group has won “Band of the Year”, “Album of the Year”, and “Song of the Year” at the New England Music Awards.
In addition to lending popular songs from his catalog, Adam will be composing original music for Folk Hero & Funny Guy in the spirit of such American singer/songwriters as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Jack Johnson. Adam is also the inspiration for the “Folk Hero” character of the film.

Risks and challenges
There are no shortage of challenges when making a feature film. With your help, we are tackling the biggest one right now: getting the film off the ground and the boulder rolling. While setbacks are inevitable, they don't have to be terminal. No film is without the low moments that make you want to quit. But everyone involved has been down that path before and we know what we need to do to persevere when the going gets tough. We also have filmmaker resources and close industry friends to draw on when we need the support of someone who has faced any particular challenge. We are committed to completing this film -- and most importantly, to making it the best damn movie that is in our ability. It is quite simply the only way a movie can get made. This is the first challenge of the process. We are excited for what is yet to come, and honored you are joining us on the journey.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
