hi. my name is ryan tanner.
first ... thanks for visiting this page. the fact that you are even here means a great deal to me.
i’m a singer and a songwriter living in nashville tennessee. i am making plans and collecting songs for a new musical project and album: Ryan Tanner & The Lake City Seven. we’ll be making this record here in nashville at the legendary sound emporium studios in april, and we’d love for you to join us at the table as we begin to tell this story.
I moved to nashville, with my wife emily and 3 young sons, about 18 months ago to be closer to the music and community that i love. it’s a brilliant city full of talent and wonder and i knew i wanted to live and work here since the first time i stepped on her soil almost 4 years ago (thank you sarah sample).
this record is a document of that journey. songs about love and hope, fear and death. they are about holding people you love close while pulling up roots in one place and finding another to put them back down. i’m immensely proud of these songs, and can’t wait for you to hear them.
we’d love for you to be a part of this journey with us. to the right you will find rewards and information about the album. there’s some pretty cool stuff i think. photography books, studio visits and i’m absolutely over the moon about a visual collaboration with some of my friends at hatch show print. i've always loved the power of collaboration in music. i'm looking forward to putting my hands in yours as we do this together.
so, by way of introduction ... the lake city seven
some are long time cohorts and others new friends.

dylan schorer - dylan is a mountain of man and one hell of a guitar/steel/dobro player. the breadth of his musicianship and knowledge of recorded music is surpassed only by the size of his heart, which, i should note, is without measure. he's been my longest running musical collaborator and there is no way this could happen without him standing somewhere close to me.

mark smith - in addition to being one of the most musical friends i have ever had, he's great at just about anything he touches. a gifted songwriter in his own right, mark has spent nearly every waking hour of the past 5 years that i've known him making himself better.

tyler lambourne - tyler will be holding down the low end on his upright bass. we have been making music together for the best part of the last 5 years, and is someone you can lean hard up against in a storm. he's kind and soft spoken but doesn't mess around with that bass. it should also be noted, that he is an aficionado of hot curries and flying objects.

marie bradshaw, kiki buehner and corinne gentry (the souvenirs) - i remember the first time i heard these girls sing together as part of their bluegrass group the souvenirs (listen to paper bag) and the hollering pines (listen to oh mama). i was floored by how well they blended as 3-part singers. they are unbelievably good, damn fine songwriters, and i am already inspired by having been around them.

dan buehner - and lastly, but surely not leasty ... dan is also a gifted songwriter and musician. he's one fourth of the pie that is the hollering pines in salt lake. his knowledge and love of american roots music is something that is invaluable to this project.
we'll also be working with jay william henderson and anthony aquilato as well as the recording engineers at the sound emporium on making sure everything sounds right. in our conversations over the last 3 months, it is clear that we are all in the same boat, paddling in time together.
the details
so, we've booked studio a at the sound emporium here in nashville. lots of great americana and country records have been made here. we knew we needed a good warm room, and the second i walked in there i knew it was the place. it's also credited to the folks who run the sound emporium that they were the kindest and most accommodating folks by miles and miles.
i've set a pretty lofty goal of $12,000. i know, i know. loads of money, but i think to make this record the way we want this is as lean as we can run. it'll cover everything from first note until the record finds it in your sweet ears.
- the studio
- engineering, mixing and mastering
- compensation for the amazing musicians and engineers
- equipment rental and accommodations
- filming and photography
- duplication costs
the rewards
I realize that these fan funded records are popping up all over the map, and with good reason. there are so many talented people who need help in making their art. I appreciate every single person who is here, and I hope you realize that if you decide to invest in this project i believe so badly in, i will forever be grateful to you for contribution, no matter the amount.
- limited edition lyric/photography book artwork
- photography prints
- photography books
- lyric and song collaborations with my friends carl, heather and laura over at hatch show print. i've given them songs and lyrics and they are creating limited edition woodcut/letterpress artwork inspired by the songs. couldn't be more excited about this. once they are gone, they are gone, gone, gone.
- studio visits and hangouts
- songwriting sessions
- becoming inaugural members of the ryan tanner and the lake city seven monthly book club. i'll send you a book a month from my library for a year. we'll talk about them, share notes, emails, carrier pigeons.
thank you again for visiting this page ... it means the stars.
special thanks to jed wells for filming parts of this video and the album photography. you are a brother and true friend. thank you for inspiring me every day.
additional special thanks to mark for his cello prelude to "let the great world spin." it's better than i could have ever imagined.
and a heartfelt thank you to the wives, husbands, families and friends that have already been so supportive in making this come to fruition. we'd be lost without you.
Risks and challenges
we've done our best to plan this out to the best of our ability. the studio is booked and we plan on walking out of that room on april 8th with a finished record. we'll do anything within reason to ensure that the deadlines are met. we are not setting out on this road envisioning it being open ended. we are recording this thing live with no overdubs, so we should have just what we need done. the money has been carefully planned and accounted for to make sure we get it into your hands in may.
